I went through a bit of a buying frenzy in the last couple of months, as it seemed that lots of things were on mega sale, suddenly available in my size, or a very obvious and annoying wardrobe hole. So from a financial standpoint I should probably go on SYC. But I also need to take a step back and assess what I have before I buy any more stuff, as well as making a dent in my alterations and up-cycling pile.

One thing that would be useful as well is coming up with more actual outfits so that I can identify my wardrobe holes better. Basic stuff, I know, but I find it hard to make myself do it!

I'm on a huge minimalism kick. I swore to stick to a budget this year and the next two months I declared myself on a shopping ban. My 2014 goals are similar- reduce spending, save, reduce clutter and related stress, and stop feeding the want monster

Im curious is your $30 monthly or for the whole year? Ive set myself a goal pretty close to $30 monthly which will be a huge step back from my spending on the past few years, but an amount that i hope will allow for a (very) few replacements and help me focus on the priorities and to discover true wardrobe holes. I feel as though i am embarking on a bit more if a style evolution and the budget constraint will certainly make parts of that difficult i hope sewing a few key pieces can help with that. SYB here i come!

I was done with fall/winter in November really. I am now focusing on spring/summer. The weather has been so nice here it is hard not to. I do plan on cutting my spending and only filling wardrobe holes. I also have a difficult time deciding what is a hole and what is an indent.

Ugh, clothing maitenance. I'm terrible about staying on top of it. I have a few things that need to go to the tailor, a few things I need to mend myself, and a bunch of knits that need to be de-pilled. I also need to check over all my boots and take the worn ones in to the tailor for maintenance and repairs. Hmm, where was my to-do list again?

I also plan to do a big sort-and-purge after my colour consult this weekend. I may be tweaking my hair and makeup colours afterwards as well. I'm really looking forward to all of that.

I just recently got winter treads put on my dress boots after wiping out and causing huge bruises on my knees (and landing on my iPad, but that's another story - yay, AppleCare!) - so I might have to shift around some money to get the rest of my boots done.

It makes such a big difference! - I should have known that. HAHA.

I'm at a place, after replacing my whole wardrobe a few years ago, that I need to go slow and be picky about replacements. I'm basically happy with my wardrobe and want to update as needed. The hard thing is to control the buying desire brought on by buying so any needed things. I've been making "Enough Already" lists, such as listing all my warm sweaters for bitterly cold days, wool skirts, wool trousers, etc. and find that I have enough that I really like.

I'm cutting down on what comes into my inbox, too. I'm not going to restrict myself too much, though. The very minute I declare I'm going on SYC mode and that I'm not going to buy anything for x amount of time, I will want everything I see. It's much better to say I'm going to make every effort to be a lot more selective in what I buy, and to make sure every purchase really counts. I'll be much less likely to make impulse purchases that way.

Just reminding myself that I have enough. I only have about 80 things with me here, including 16 shoes and 5 jackets. But even that hasn't all been worn in the last 4+ months. Dresses remain the biggest unworn category and I need to sell at least 2, maybe 3 of them.
I did take one dress in to have the straps shortened an inch. Small victory there. We'll see if they do a good job or not. That's what always stops me from alterations; finding a decent tailor to do them.

It's sort of like dieting. Once I declare I'm on a diet all I think about is food! I'm not officially on SYC but have been behaving that way for the past several months. We are building a new home and it seems all of my creative energy and $ are going toward that. I just packed for an upcoming trip and realized that I have more than enough clothes for my life and then some. I think this is why I love the wardrobe challenges, forces me to work with what I have and be creative. I wish you luck and will follow your thread. I truly admire the discipline required to SYC. It's something we should all do at some point.

I have one foot in SYC, but I was given a $100 gift card to GoodWill for Christmas, and I will be using that this year (starting in a week or two, most likely), and I'l still be taking advantage of free clothes when I come across them, as well as trying to use up some of my fabric stash. So I doubt it'll feel as much like SYC as some of you all's SYC does.

I'm with Viva in that I really should be DONE with buying for winter. I had ordered several items on Dec 31 and they've all arrived. I was debating with myself on whether to count them as '13 or '14 purchases but the reality is that they will be paid for on my January Nordstrom bill so I have to count them as purchases for 2014.

Out of 5 items that I ordered, I am keeping 2- a black cashmere sweater (feeding my newly rekindled love of cashmere and I'm wearing it today) and the black brocade jeans from Kut that were an Angie find. The others are all going back.

But Angie definitely tempted me with her black and white post!

I do know that I will need to add some things for spring. But I am determined to keep the numbers well below what they were last year.

SYC is one aspect of my resolutions this year but not an overall restrictive policy. I actually have a slightly bigger clothing budget this year but I want to use the money more thoughtfully, so I am trying to institute SYC as a generally more common action, so that I use what I have more creatively and thus choose new things more carefully. Right now, I am using SYC to keep from buying more winter things. I'd like to save my money for spring.

I always enjoy SYC, even if I never seem to make it very long without purchasing something. It always makes me take a breather, which can be really helpful in seeing how much one wears, needs, and really has a wardrobe hole for. As others have mentioned, I'm also trying to do a shop your budget for this year. I have plenty of clothes that are sitting unworn, so no need to do large purchases this year. But need and want are two different things.

I am doing SYC (though I did fall off the wagon last night and ordered a pair of dress black pants- but since this is a wardrobe staple for me and I just recently purged all my dress pants for various reasons, I justified the purchase- but the pants have to really fit well.)

What I am discovering:
1- I am an impulsive shopper- see above. I was tempted to buy some things twice now but discovered they are just like things I already have. So I resisted. 2- I have a lot of duplicates: In the past I would find something that fit and that I liked, and then I would buy 7 of it (all different colors but would only wear one or two).
3- I don't have a lot of quality items: I have already gotten rid of several items (3 pants- AKA the Swiffer pants- and a sweater) purchased in the past few months.
4- I don't need a lot (I telecommute 99 % of the time and my daytime activities include errands [read: shopping!], walking the dog, and going to the gym- so I do not need a dressy wardrobe. My uniform of jeans, (quality form now on!) tees, and cardigans suits me fine and I have plenty on board.
5- I have a lot of things I still don't wear: often for really good reasons! As I force myself to wear things, I discover that they don't fit that well, are poorly fabricated, are worn (holes), etc so there is a reason they have just been hanging there. So each time I wear something, I assess it and either wash and put it back or wash and donate/toss (yes- part of the funeral of the toss is to let it go "clean").

I am now down to 102 (103 if the black pants fit!) items of clothing excluding accessories, shoes, and specialty wear (lounge, gym, hiking). It really is an exercise to see just how many items I need for a comfortable lifestyle. Interesting challenge!

I'm not exactly on SYC, but I definitely need to slow down the purchases after a big wardrobe overhaul this fall.

Today I accomplished a large chunk of my New Year's resolution: I took all my too-long jeans in to the tailor for hemming, plus a few other things for repairs. I'm hoping this will remind me that I am extremely happy with the five pairs of jeans I own, and there's no point in shopping for more.

I'm also almost done my big closet organizing (photos soon!). My clothing is literally in front of me every morning, now. There's no closet in our room. My boyfriend uses the big hall closet just outside the room, and I have all my clothes on two nice garment racks (plus a dresser for sweaters, jeans, and tees). I really think that having everything in view makes me less likely to buy new things. If nothing else, there's no more room.

Plus, the closet clean-out generated a bit of money from a small pile of things I sold to Crossroads and a maybe more, in a few months, from a few expensive, unworn pieces that I took to a fancy consignment store (first time consigning).

I'm also on SYC, for the most part. I bought a lot in 2013, and I am still trying to assimilate it. I was finding that I was accumulating stuff faster than I could really use it, and I was starting to feel out of control in my wardrobe. (I don't have a huge wardrobe, but I was a severe minimalist before YLF, so it didn't take me long before I started to struggle!)

I am allowing myself to purchase things that I *know* are wardrobe holes and/or would be workhorses. But those items have to be absolutely perfect. I recently ordered a pair of booties that had a chunky heel--they were kind of rustic, and I wanted to wear them with jeans (regular and bootcut) and also hopefully with skirts. To make a long story short, I discovered that when I wore the booties with my bootcuts, they looked very similar to a pair of shooties that I already own, since most of the shoe is covered up by the extra hem length. So I said to myself, "OK, is a rustic bootie *really* a wardrobe hole, or do my shooties kind of cover it?" I had to admit that the shooties covered the wardrobe hole pretty well. So back the booties went.

I spent some days last week creating combos of tops (layering piece plus cardigan) in a very feminine style. That was fun. I write down my "keeper" combos in my fashion notebook. On upcoming days, I will probably try to put together other types of layering combos in different styles: boho, classic, etc. I also checked out the book *The Triumph of Individual Style* from the library and am seeing how I can create better outfits with the principles in the book. These are some of the ways I am playing in my closet right now.

We had some big expenses in January so I will be with you in SYC closet mode for a while. I am feeling a bit grumbly about it since I am not where I want to be with my wardrobe. I am looking at Pinterest and trying to see if I can come up with some new combinations and focus on fitness goals for now. I think I should try to sell off some old stuff while I am in no buy mode.

Sounds good Ariadne, I'll just copy from my other thread
"Challenge #2 I am pretty much out of my clothing budget. I go Jul to Jun and I think I have already spent it all. And my job finishes in July so I may have little money for the second half of the year too. I think I can get a few things with vouchers, any birthday money I may receive or using my "spending money" and I think I'll need to, as I have stuff wearing out, particularly my workout gear"

I have just come off a lengthy SYC stint, and can honestly say I'm looking forward to going on another one! It really does feel great to know you're stretching your dollars as far as possible. I have no advice to offer beyond checking Angie's archives from time to time. I was amazed at the number of fun outfit ideas I came across just by flipping around the site.
When I've addressed some yawning crevaces in my wardrobe, I'll be joining you ladies! Good luck to those who are already on board.

Well, I'm always moving, or about to move, it seems. Didn't bring a lot of winter stuff here to FL and it's been cold. Snapped up some long sleeves and leather and such. I have been finding a lot of my year's shopping list items and ordering up a storm. Everything is on my list, but at this rate, I'll blow through the whole year by May. I'm committed to my list but need to keep my rate of buying in check.
I expect 2 or 3 of the 5 things to go back, in which case, I'll be right on schedule and abstain from any more purchases until next month. If by some miracle I like and keep them all, I'll be on hold until March starts. Eeek!

We're moving too! DH and I will be downsizing in the process, and hope to be able to find out 'retirement' home within the next 6 to 8 months. I'm hoping to be too busy to feel the lure of the shops, since I'm very happy with what I've got in my closet.
