I'm a total failure of budget and self control. There are so many pretty things in stores now... I've made some very nice spring upgrades without really meaning to. But they are all in constant rotation so I think they were needed. My style has changed. Last spring I was layering tight tanks and t's, I just don't want to dress in 50 layers any more. It's hard to get out of the constant cycle of wants that quickly turn into needs. I have one pair of work pants and no MOTG casual shoes... are these real wardrobe holes or just wants???

jayne: i love your wintery profile pic, I live in Trondheim

I like to shop alone too. I think it's because I don't trust what some of my friends say about fitting or style and in general we do other fun stuff than shopping when together ;- )

about not spending: I found that by allowing myself to spend/shop at week 3 after payday, made an impact. it's so easy to get carried away just after payday and then I have often ended up using credit and lost a bit track of the budgeting/accounting.

Thanks, Mo! I know that part of it is that affordable clothes used to be such an anomaly that finding something triggered the buy! buy! buy! alarm. I need to reprogram now that the scarcity is no more.

Natalie, I'm thinking I'll spend a couple hundred at the most. I will have Hubs with me, so part of it will be to keep up appearances (hey, fake it 'til you make it, i guess). We also love to hit up thrift stores on vacation. In all honesty, I can afford plenty more clothes than I have, but now it is about space and time. I brought one bag that I can fill with goodies as my "personal item" for the airplane. My reward is probably going to be a pair of Frye boots off of 6pm or Amazon.

OK Rae, putting on my sponsor hat, do you have a budget for Italy or is it a free-for-all? There are so many nice things there that I imagine it would be easy to go hog-wild especially if you know you can't buy anything when you get back! What is your prize for not using the emergency pass? It's gotta be a big one! December is a long way away!

Part of me wants to do SYC to prove to DH that I am NOT a shopping addict! Maybe I'm just in denial! ;P

Rae, all kidding aside, it is an interesting peek into our own reasons why we shop. It is never *just* about keeping a current wardrobe, in my opinion anyway. Good luck to you!

GP, my goal would be to be good until my birthday in December. :0 I would have a 1-in-2-out pass for anything that is a super special emergency, and I am free to buy whatever I want from Italy. And of course I get a prize at the end if I don't use my emergency pass.

I know this is extreme, but in a lot of ways I feel addicted to shopping, and I want a detox of sorts - I may jokingly refer to you as my "sponsor" from time to time. I want to get to know my closet better without the distraction of new things always coming in.

Just last night, I was very tempted by an extra 30% off sale at J. Crew and a 20% off coupon from Piperlime. My name is Rae, and I have a problem...

Mo, you are an inspiration. You are one of the few who actually stuck to SYC and didn't seem perturbed about it. I was hopeless in my multiple attempts to start SYC in January. Now I am really going to try to do it for 3 months, and after that SYB. I too notice that I browse online when I am bored. Removing temptation is helpful. A few months ago I unsubscribed from all the sample sales. I have also unsubscribed from all clothing-related emails and I will also unlike the clothing stores on Facebook.

Rae, we can be SYC buddies. How long are you planning to stay on SYC?

Congratulations. I am finding that I have really curtailed my shopping pending weight loss and am quite surprised by how much money I have for other things.

I am going to try to make lists of pieces I have and holes and only buy those things. I don't wear half of the pieces I buy more than a few times anyway.

Well done ladies. Rae, I shop for recreation and when I have nothing to do as well. I need to find a better hobby.

I just started full SYC days ago (the exception being shopping while in Italy). And I've already been to a Marshalls and TJ Maxx to browse - I'm learning already that shopping is one of the go-to ways I spend time when I'm alone.

I'm counting this all a victory, though, as I did not buy anything, though I was sorely tempted by:
- several pairs of clearance boots ("Hold out for great Frye or Doc boots after SYC!")
- a $40 Allsaints Dress at Marshall's ("It doesn't fit perfectly, and you have other dresses.")
- a neon orange and gray colorblock dress ("Don't even try that on; you have nowhere to wear it"
- an adorable $8 crossbody bag in deep teal ("Too similar to your turquoise crossbody and too small for everyday wear.")

I really felt like YLF was in my head this weekend, which was VERY helpful. There was a time when I would have bought the AS dress just because it was at Marshall's and I'd never seen that brand in a discount store before.

Shopping my budget is going ok. I realized recently that I've gone over my budget lately more than I thought. It wasn't intentional. I just wasn't doing the math and paying enough attention.

I have shopping goals for the next month that include finding sleeveless summer tops and some things for hubby.

I'm trying to wrap my brain around slowing my shopping down. I've been going full speed for about a year now and I knew it would slow down at some point. That point is almost here. I have a few specific things to find for this summer and fall, but then I'll mostly be replacing things as they wear out and slowing upgrading things. It's hard to "buy less, buy better" when you need a whole wardrobe at once. But as my quickly-bought items wear out, I hope to upgrade one thing at a time... replace a couple cotton sweaters with cashmere... that sort of thing.

My SYB for this year is highly variable. It is based on my tip income which this week, due to being sick one day and having storms plus closure (snow today) on other days, has come to a mere $26. That is my all-time record low.

Wow, I'm immensely impressed! Congrats!!! You have stayed on track for a long time and seem to have found a good way of planning / shopping for the future. and as you say, you are in control so the items you bought seem like reasonable closet investments.

jayne: as you, i'm interested in good ways to stay on track. i have a shopping list, but i am often impatient - especially when i find an item on my list which also is on sale. *sigh* . my plan was to SYC or at least SYB from february - june.

i was super optimistic, but i just found out that i'm going to new york in a months time....so what to do then??? still SYC (in new york, which is THE best shopping city) or SYB (which is very low) or allow myself some goodies on credit. i have no clue yet.

that said, i live in norway and don't travel alot (even though it is my #1 favorite activity). but i spent a week in NYC last spring and i was totally in love with the city (and the street style and the shopping oportunities and museums and.......)

He he! I went to one mall on our drive across country and tried on multiple things, and mentally put a few in my shopping cart for later, but left without buying anything. I don't live near a mall normally, so that's not a usual trigger for me. I live near discount places like Ross and Target and Marshall's (well, within 35 miles anyway). I shop a lot online.
My biggest motivator was income. I bought the boots right before we left FL (and our income) behind. And I did not buy the little inexpensive crop white jacket until I had spoken with my friend about getting back on at my old golf course job (income soon to resume).
Also, this year I made a specific list for spring/summer items and was slowly searching for items to pick up once April rolled around. When you aren't just aimlessly looking for what tickles your fancy, it's easier to (try to) stay the course.

I can't believe it is almost the end of 3 months! Granted, I didn't make it through cleanly, I recently had a $15 slip and am moments from purposefully breaking it today. But I'm okay with that. Because:
All of these purchases were on my list for spring and none of them are impulse, unthought out buys.
I will eventually want/need all items that I am getting, and they all fill holes and are not repeats of what is in my closet.
All of them were found at a discount, roughly half price.
My overall wardrobe plan for 2012 equated to roughly one piece per month, which is where this leaves me once I buy today's dress.

Justifications? Maybe. But I feel very in control of both my wardrobe (actually having a plan!) and my spending so far this year, so I'm good with it!

The grand lay out for 3 months will be $270, which equals $90 per month. I decided I would try and budget $1000 for this year, as opposed to $1500 last year. So far, right on target. (oh and one last thing, getting the verbal go ahead for rehire on the golf course made it easier to buy - if I was still unsure on the job front, I'd still be waiting, $15 or not!)

How is your SYC/SYB going? Are you sticking it out these last weeks? Or are you going longer and stronger (Rae?)
