Shoes! I love how the right shoes can update or change the vibe of a look. I'm trying to rein it in but I always feel like shoes are a good investment. Clothes come and go but the CPW on shoes is usually pretty good.

Hm I like simpler shoes... but I also like having a lot of them Definitely a higher clothes-to-shoes ratio in my closet as with most people, and that is a good type of ratio for me.

I like to have lots of variety in my shoes so I'm not looking for the one shoe to rule them all. I rarely wear a pair of shoes more than once during a work week. And the more distinctive ones probably more like once every 2-3 weeks.

I agree that shoes can definitely change the vibe of an outfit. I certainly love buying clothes- particularly sweaters and jeans- but shoes and bags are my passion.

I think a minimal wardrobe with lots of shoes wouldn't make a lot of sense for me personally, although it's an interesting idea.

Why wouldn't it work for me? I'm hard to fit for both clothes and shoes, but I feel like it's easier for me to find basic, versatile shoes and non-basic clothing. My main issues for shoes are just that my feet are really small and I'm picky about comfort, so what I have to choose from are mostly old-reliable brands that don't go as trendy. Then, the more interesting options even among those can sell out before I have a chance to really consider them. On the other hand, with clothes, what works is a lot more of a random luck of the draw, and the kinds of versatile, well-tailored pieces that would pull their weight in a minimal wardrobe are often the hardest to find and the least fun to look for.

I do love shoes, though! I've got a pretty good collection and love shopping for them. And I'm always amazed how much fresher everything feels when I find a shoe with an updated shape that goes with a lot. Case in point: I just got metallic pointy-toed flats and black d'orsay flats and I'm really enjoying wearing them with the types of things I wore ballet flats with last year.

My cart has both a pair of shoes and a new piece of clothing. The piece of clothing is on my need list. The shoes are on my love list. What do I buy? Of coarse, the shoes every time! lol.

Hm, interesting question. I don't know if shoes trump clothes for me, exactly, but shoes are a much harder purchase. And probably more important, in a way. I have wide, high-volume feet, and I walk/move around a lot. I'm hard on my shoes, so they simply don't last like, say, a good jacket would.

I often look to my shoes to bring some subtle eclectic-ness into my outfits, but my feet are too large for pretty, dainty, strappy things. I need sturdy shoes that ground me. Hence my functional funk factor. That's a tough, tall order -- and while I have high demands on my clothes to fulfill all these requirements, the stakes are not quite as high and the clothing items are frankly easier to find. I can pick up a funky sweater no problem, but I can't pick up a pair of cute silver metallic ankle strap flats... as much as I'd love to.

I have more clothes than shoes, but shoes operate differently in my wardrobe!

Oh, no way! Numbers wise, I have 5 to 1 clothing to shoes and I feel I have quite a varied shoe wardrobe even though it's less than 30 pair.

Speaking to that numerical question, I have to confess that even though I strive to pare down my closet to only things I love to wear, I have little interest in meeting a numerical goal. 33 items sounds horribly limiting *to me*. Even 50 does. But you never know how I might shift focus in the future as I get older and more set in my ways. I admire and respect those who are happy with such a streamlined wardrobe, but it's just not me, at this point in time.

But if we're talking in terms maybe of proportion, say a shoe collection that outnumbers garments in a wardrobe, I don't think I'd thrive with that, even though I love having a generous shoe selection. I have about 80 pairs of shoes/boots now, and my clothing way, way outnumbers that. I probably have well over 80 tops alone. I know it sounds excessive to wardrobe minimalists, but I live in a four-season climate and love variety.

My question actually has a kind of numerical component--meaning,
did you ever consider that you could maintain just a "33-item" wardrobe (or 50, even) if you had say, 40 pairs of shoes (just to pick a random number) ?

The limited clothing number would not mean never buying something new, but having very limited numbers of the key items and using them in a very multi-purpose way (dresses that function like LBD's; jeans that are dress up or down; trousers, skirts; limited tops & blouses) and do most of the vibe-occasion changing via the shoes.

Or the more practical way of looking at it is whether it becomes more possible to have a more limited clothing wardrobe if you "allow" yourself a generous shoe selection. But even that can be pared down to making better choices for shoe versatility, when possible, so, being more picky that a given pair of shoes has to really pull its weight.

Interesting question and one I've thought about while I was minimalizing and rebuilding. I love shoes because they change the vibe of an outfit. I used to own so many shoes until I got diagnosed with arthritis/bunions/heel spurs. Then, I had to get rid of 90% of my shoes, because I shouldn't have to "put up with" pain, otherwise I'll risk needing foot surgery in the future. I'm limited to certain brands now that don't 100% match the vibe I'm going for, but a good enough aesthetically passable comfortable version.

That said, I still build my wardrobe based on the shoes I own. I have much less now than before, but I at least ensure that all my outfits work with the shoes I have.

What an interesting question. I don't think that I am a shoe person, per se. I LOVE shoes and I love to look at them and admire them...but I don't need to own them. I am a bit practical about shoes. In the winter, I pretty much stick to boots and I know what works and is comfortable. However, I have learned shoe is important ( as is the bag ), when one wears a simple, basic outfit. Jeans and a t shirt and a jacket, for example.

As a SAHM, I think that I just need fewer clothes in general.

I'd be hard pressed to choose one over the other, because I really love clothes, but I relate to what Jeanne says: shoes are so much less traumatic when they don't fit! I never feel "fat" when shoes don't work.

I'm a fairly easy fit in shoes (white sandal search notwithstanding), I'm a common size, and my feet are not terribly fussy, so it's usually pretty easy to find shoes I love. I have a fairly big collection. And I love how shoes can totally change the vibe of an outfit so quickly. I have put on outfits that seem meh, until I add the right shoes.

It has always been and will always be all about the shoes for me. Even as my feet have started to give me more grief over the past few years and I've been forced to replace many of my higher heels with lower options.

My hierarchy of passion items are:

1. shoes
2. jewelry
3. jackets (usually moto style)
4. belts
5. bags

I've found that simply by switching out my jewelry and footwear (and sometimes my jacket and bag) I can change the vibe of an entire outfit, even something as simple as jeans and a tee, while also still having it still be a representation of a style that is uniquely me.

It is shoes for me. I have the most fussy feet in the world size 11wide no arch. I never order shoes offline that I cannot return. I shop at the end of the day and I give almost all of my shoes the "sunday church" test. Sunday is one of the busiest days for myself on my feet moving up and down stairs all day maybe a family breakfast or dinner out somewhere after. If the shoe is bot comfortable or at least 4hrs they will be donated. I have built my wardrobe around my shoes.

Interesting thought. I like what crutcher said, that clothes are the cake, and shoes are the icing.

For me, practicality is involved here. Shoes cost much more (as others have pointed out), and they also take up a lot of space. I have neither lots of money or lots of space! I try to buy shoes that are distinctive yet will go with a variety of outfits. I do think that shoes get the vibe "just right," which is what I think you're getting at, but I think even if I had more money I would still funnel it into clothes, simply because there's a lot more "real estate" to be covered by the clothing; hence, it is more important to me. Oh, and since I work at home most of the time and thus don't wear shoes all day, it wouldn't make sense for me to focus so much on shoes.

Joy, that's what I mean--and it is almost always for dressy occasions. It's so hard for me to find dressy, comfortable shoes, but then I have to DO something and can't find the HEWI, so get something, but wish they were more ...(comfortable, cushioned, wider toe, pointier toe, better color, lower heel, higher heel, more stylish, prettier).

I'm on the bench with this question, but I am willing to spend more for the right shoe...the one to rule them all.
When you said "Or is it just the same problem of PPP, so that if you had the right shoes, like the right anything, you wouldn't need so many?", a lightbulb went off. When I find the right pair, I stop looking to fill that hole and don't buy as many shoes ( or anything else). If I buy 4-hour shoes, no matter how fab they are, the hunt still goes on and I end up with too many red pumps or whatever the shoe is.

I'm with Angie. I bat for Team Clothes because they're a lot more fun to shop for. I also have super fussy feet so there are so many practical considerations for shoes that makes it kind of a pain to shop for them.

my motto --you can never have to many shoes! 1st for me, shoes last a long time. i'm still wearing shoes i bought 7 or 8 years ago. 2nd i think shoes can change the way an outfit feels. basic work outfits can be changed up changing the shoes.

For me it is shoes, with jackets a close second. I need too many types of shoes for different activities, from my work out shoes for the gym, both indoor and outdoor shoes I can run in for dog agility, as indoor ones can be more stylish than the outdoor ones that have to withstand wet grass, dirt, etc. But since I wear jeans a lot, I find that by changing shoes and top or jacket can take me from an agility class to out to dinner, and these things can be easily changed in the car...Just pop a nice top over a tee or tank, change jacket if it is cooler, and add nice sandals, booties, flats or something instead of the running shoes, and I am good to go.

I spend more on shoes. I rarely purchase cheap shoes unless I strike it lucky in a sale. I will buy cheap clothes though. I also am a standard fit in shoes and appreciate that when shopping.

With my lifestyle I often dress the shoes first and then work backwards.

Walking school bus - need flat shoes, that means jeans or trousers etc...

Rugby practice, need flats again that are waterproof.

Meetings , can wear heels.

Whether I am a shoe person or a clothes person I don't know. Maybe a dress person first, definitely my favourite and best look!

(Love Cocolion's hierarchy of fashion passion...will try and create my own...)
Now to the grave issue at hand...as to whether shoes or clothes are my passion...I guess I would say shoes come first, I have the most shoes...seem to always buy shoes...Its like shoes are the icing and clothes are the cake...You definitely need the added attraction of icing to cover the cake...
As Angie said, "(shoes) they change the landscape of your wardrobe and style." Shoes become an accessory of necessity...Yet clothes are the star attraction...Could I just declare a tie?...smile...

And I forgot to add that the latest trend item, in any category, gets a lot of devotion/browsing time too. Right now it's a pair of culottes and some upscale basketball shorts. I think that would be right up there in #2 or even #1. I'm always looking for something new and exciting to refresh my look.
