I had a hard time with my recent shoe purge. I love all my shoes and I'm not that hard on them, so they last forever! I ended up with a storage space issue, which was the catalyst I needed.

What worked for me ultimately (and I use a similar strategy for clothing and it worked for my mom downsizing her kitchen) was instead of getting rid of what doesn't work, do a more deliberate look at which shoes I loved and - key here - wear the most in my current lifestyle. I took the "loved and don't wear the most" shoes and filled two shopping bags with them. I deliberately didn't take them directly to the Goodwill, and I kept them on hand. I found that I missed one or two pairs, which I rescued and ultimately replaced. (They were in the bags and not shelves for a reason.)

Good luck with this. It's hard to part with beloved works of art.

If you've really got loads and loads of shoes, one methodology is this:
A) parse them out seasonally first, the thinking here being you'll just purge for the coming season & reevaluate the others nearer their particular season so as to avoid overlooking a keeper just because you're not really in that mood right now.
B) then cluster like with like, trying to adhere to the 'one and done' rule as much as possible (the exception being if you need say, nude shoes, in several heel heights for different jeans, etc.)
C) finally determine if the remaining 'cream of the crop' actually are in decent condition, meet your current lifestyle needs and express any of your style objectives.

Try not to sentimentalize too much by focusing on past happy memories... I have a small 'time out' box where I keep a few of these sorts of shoes. But they have to be super special!

Shoes are like clothes. I find that even though I have a lot of them, I end up wearing only a few of them. I have definite favorites each season. It's hard for me to know in advance which are going to be the favorite and why? Last summer I had a pair of platform wedge Naot sandals that I wore Several times a week. I have a lot of shoes, so repeating the same pair multiple times in a week is significant. The year before, in the summer it was a pair of Cordani sandals. This winter I wore my Bos Co. Hiking boots the most, with my charcoal Aquatalia and charcoal Arche booties coming in together in second place for most repeat wears.

I suspect it has to do with comfort and outfit coordination. I also wear orthotics with closed toe shoes, but not sandals. I purge by signs of wear, fit, and if a shoe still fits well with my style/items in my wardrobe. I have a few special shoes that coordinate with only one dress. If I could find a shoe that served multiple purposes that could substitute, I might toss those.

I couldn't do without a pair of sneakers, nice and comfy flats (Campers come to mind), heels in a neutral color (tan, for instance), and the rest depends on the weather... Boots in winter and sandals in summer.

As a starting point...if you were going on a trip that involved both work and play, but could only bring 5 pairs of shoes, which ones would you choose? Why?

Last spring I got rid of all the shoes that were not comfortable. I did not buy very many to replace them, but curbed my shoe buying impulses. now I do a fairly good job of actually deciding how each new pair will fit into my wardrobe, how and when I will wear them, etc. I still have a few pairs that did not go out with the purge because they are still stylish and do not hurt my feet. Am currently deciding how much I will actually wear them. letting go of some of them is not easy even though I doubt if I will wear them much. So depending on your storage space, how much you will wear them and figure out if you will miss them is what I wish I could do.

Agree with Sterling. Get rid of the shoes you never wear because they hurt and keep the rest :-)!

Shoes are my biggest challenge. I have wide feet and finding shoes that are comfortable is always hard. I decided to get rid of every single pair that hurts. I started this month. So I would suggest comfort as your guide.
