Yes! You need boots! No more ballet flats if you live in a city that has a Winter. You need pukka closed shoes.

^ Sorry if that sounded snobby. I just mean it can really look dumpy and silly, or it can look funky and youthful, depending on how you wear it. But I don't really know enough about your age and personal style to explain what I mean in a way that it relates to you. Angie had a picture of this on her Hong Kong post I think.

inkstainedwriter -- "Normal" stores is a relative term. I purchase my giant shoes at Nordstrom... you just gotta know where to shop! You are right though, most shops/brands do stop at a size 10 or 11.

I agree with Maya... boots will be your best friend. I moved from CA to IL and boots are all I wear in the fall/winter. When I lived in CA I didn't even own one pair of boots.

Boots, boots, boots! I am unwavering about this. You can wear Cons in the fall and maybe winter (DC is further south so maybe it gets warm enough there for them), but boots are far more versatile, warm, practical, and comfortable in the winter. I would not wear anything else with socks. You don't need 3" heels. I think there is room in every cold-weather closet for a sweet pair of flat riding boots.

For now, how about some oxfords? I admit I wear socks with flats and pumps sometimes, but I really do think you need to have a certain personal style to pull this off. It doesn't just work automatically.

@Marianna - LOL. I've always assumed mine were huge because I passed my mother's eight at 13. She got my handmedowns and I kept on growing. :-p But I am glad they stop there - they're the last size normal stores usually have.

@Maya - thanks! I've been here a few winters (I'm near DC), but I've either been wearing some ANCIENT clogs or wearing work shoes. Now, I'm a SAHM and I'd like something that doesn't have a three inch heel.

Oh dear, you think THIS is cold? It's going to get a LOT colder...

You need to get yourself boots, pronto. Definitely more than one pair, and if you can, 3 pairs. I don't know how far up the east coast you are, but that's all anyone wears here starting late September.

Psssh, size 10 feet are NOT huge. Try having size 12 feet.

I kept looking for a question/blog post about this and couldn't find it, so I'm just going to ask.

I'm a 5'8", with a size 10 foot. They're huge. :)

Anyway, I've recently moved from the South (flipflops all year) to the East Coast. It's cold here! I'm not sure what to do about shoes.

My wish list for my ideal shoe:
- I'd like to wear socks, not hose, and not invisible socks. I get cold easily, and this is the easiest way for me to stay warm. I love Gap's argyle socks, especially.
- flats or a short wedge
- something that *could* go with brown or black. I know people say to wear them together, but it doesn't always work well.
- something not too expensive. Something more than Target, but not more than 50 dollars.

I tried these on tonight and they're super comfy:
http://www.zappos.com/skechers-jubilee-bronze

Is that a no-no with socks??

Converse? (again, I keep thinking that would make my feet look freakish)

Any help would be appreciated - thanks!
