I saw an episode of the Golden Girls about that very thing, Shana....

The way I look at it is:

Shoes are HARD. They are by far the hardest thing for me to shop for. I don't walk the same way indoors as I do in my everyday life. For one thing, I'm running about on my feet for at least an hour a day, usually much more. For another thing, I'm getting around on hard concrete, not a nice carpeted interior. I take longer strides and walk much faster for a sustained period of time which I simply don't do at home or anywhere else indoors. There is just no substitute. I can't tell you how many times a pair of shoes has passed the "walk around at home" test with flying colors, only to destroy my feet when I actually take them on the road.

If I kept every pair of shoes that failed the street walking test, I'd end up losing hundreds if not thousands of dollars. In fact, I *did* end up doing just that. I have a whole bag of shoes I can't wear that I need to take to the consignment store. I thought all of them were great at the time. Wrong.

But several hundred or even thousand dollars is not even a chip in the shoulder for a major corporation, so I don't feel guilty about it. I'm not dishonest: I always acknowledge that the shoes are worn and I always try my best not to get them scuffed, but sometimes it's just not avoidable. If I have to pay a tiny bit more for that peace of mind, I'm willing to do it.

One thing I did discover recently is that I can take shoes to the mall and at least get some idea of comfort. The mall is indoors but it's an expansive space for me to walk around in. It's not flop proof but it's better than home or the office.

Lots of stores seem to do this. Honestly, I have always felt funny taking advantage of such a policy but on the other hand, we pay for the privilege of these types of return policies so why not? What I find completely unethical is to buy an item with the plan on wearing it (say for a special occasion) and returning it.

I have done that with a pair of shoes at Nordstrom once before. I wore them for a day and they ended up digging into my skin. So I batted my eyelids, showed the sale assistant my damaged feet and got my money back.

I think wearing them around the house is OK, but once you step outside, they are yours (unless there is some kind of defect). Same goes with clothes - wear around the house to get a feel for them - but once you wear them out, they are yours.

In the UK a shop would not accept a return for a pair of shoes which have been worn outside of the home unless they are faulty.

Zappos has a 1 year guarantee...365 days. Ive worn and returned shoes with absolutely no problem with them. Most shoe stores in this area will take them back within 30 days but only if they look like they've never been worn outside....I recently brought in a pair (my noisy sandals) to Schuler Shoes after the 30 days and they were obviously worn outside and they took them back and crdeited my visa! I thought at best they'd give store credit only...so its definitely worth a try, even if it states that on the receipt....

Eh, they say that, just like they say standard shipping is 4-5 days...

I called and let them know the shoes were not working out for me and they took them back twice, warning me both times that it was a "one time courtesy." I try my best not to take advantage of such generous policies but sometimes it just can't be helped I'm afraid.

Zappos takes back worn shoes? I thought their policy was unworn only, hence the request to try shoes out on a carpeted surface?

"Products must be in the condition you received them and in the original box and/or packaging."

Wow, I just didn't know, I usually give a away shoes that are too uncomfortable for me. I realize they are not for me after a day of wearing them.
Maya, I would do as you do, wearing them at work and see what happens.

I didn't realize Zappos would take back worn shoes....

I think it is completely reasonable to wear a pair of shoes for a day (inside) to determine if they are going to work out for you. I would personally not wear them outside though.

I'm wearing my current shoes for 8-9 hours today around the office. It may seem dishonest but I dont care. I need to know if a pair of shoes will go the distance for me, and the only way to know that is to wear them as I usually do. I will try not to wear them outside, but if I do and they hurt, back they go. Zappos and Nordstrom both take back used shoes and I'm grateful for that.

I think Amazon/Endless might too because I have seen a lot of used shoes on Amazon Warehouse lately.

Do you return shoes after wearing them? I mean, after one/two hours of wearing them you realize they are very uncomfortable? I have never heard of returning worn shoes but a co-worker mentioned that she returns shoes if they are not comfy.
