I completely understand the problem, Dianthus. I had the exact same dilemma last week, when we had a summer storm and it was TORRENTIAL rain, yet too warm and muggy for my hardcore rain boots. I ended up wearing Converse, which at least have rubber toes and the canvas don't get destroyed if they get a bit wet.

We get a lot of damp cool weather year-round, but relatively few torrential downpours. When it's only drizzly, I'll still wear my nice leather ankle boots and shoes. I just make sure I spray them with leather protector on a regular basis. The thing is, if it rains at all in the summer, it tends to be a downpour. Warm air holds more water than cold air! And Hunter wellies seem like overkill in mid-July.

Janet, I posted this in early June when it was darn chilly here. It has been in the low 30s Celsius for a few weeks and I just realized that the Sperry boat shoes I bought are working even in this hot weather so perhaps they aren't the best cool summer wear shoes going. I do love them though.

Booties and ankle boots all the way:-) I hear you on wanting to wear something different during the Summer months, D, but I've found that a brighter coloured pair of ankle boots can still feel fun (I have yellow ones) and Summer-y.

(I'd wear flat oxfords too in this type of weather if I owned a pair)

Booties are my favourites!! I have had such a binge on buying booties recently, its just sales sales sales everywhere. I found a really nice place that I have been to a few times recently. If you guys love booties, you need this place:

Thanks for all of the suggestions. Our winters are so long and cold that I really hate to wear boots or booties when it finally gets to summer but I guess I will have to bite the bullet. I like the idea of a loafer too and will check those out.

Thanks again.

I have some patent Sperry loafers with lug soles that are perfect for this kind of day. The thick soles keep your feet from getting cold and the rain doesn't harm the patent leather. I hope your weather warms up soon!

We are all fogged in near SF too (cleared for a bit late yesterday thankfully as we had fireworks for Golden Gate Bridge birthday!) and I have been wearing Cons and ballet flats. But I can't wear my leather soled flats or oxfords in cooler weather so it's Me Too's or something with a thicker rubber bottom sole. Booties would work and I am seeing tons of full on boots around town.

Dianthus - this is the weirdest early summer, isn't it? Like Suz mentioned, I think oxfords, pumps or loafers are the way to go. I'm wearing sandals but I always run on the warm side so it doesn't bother me. Mind you, I wore my Docs Marcie's boots on the weekend.

Um, if it were not already in the 80's and humid as death here, I would still be wearing my boots and would wear them all summer if I could. The lighter colored, mid-calf or lower ones look warm weather appropriate to me, especially paired with bare legs and skirts.

I also wear my oxfords in this type of weather, possibly with ankle socks (although I know that is not everyone's cup of tea.)

I hear you, Dianthus. You know, Shannon and I have had multiple conversations about this. I think it is partly a function of our climate; we tend to buy BOOTS (or booties) or SANDALS, because we deal with such temperature extremes and very little in between. What we need on damp cool but not cold days are proper shoes, ideally shoes that can stand up to wet (if it is wet). Or a summer-ish bootie. I find the Report Marks bootie works well on days like that; I can wear it without socks if I want so it's not too hot. If it's wet, I probably would wear my Aquatalia flats (rainproof!) or my Doc Saras (high platform). But any oxford or pump or loafer or flat would work, really. I think closed toes are probably key.

Dianthus, I think I would pull out my booties and ballet flats. And for work my heeled pumps. I have a thing about getting my feet wet so I really need closed in shoes when it's wet.

Hi everybody. We are having very strange weather this year. It was in the 70s in March and now that it is almost June, we are lucky to be in the 50s in the morning.

I went out to do a few errands yesterday and couldn't figure out what to wear on my feet. It seems too late in the year to wear boots so they are out. I don't want to wear sandals because my feet would get cold (and wet) and runners are too gear-like. I ended up wearing a pair of black skechers but they seemed too gearish so I wore black yoga pants instead of jeans to compensate.

So, what do you wear for footwear when it is cold and wet but its the season for sandals?
