I don't think there is really a right answer, it's all preference. A few forum members, like Mary K or day Vies, could combine teal and burgundy to perfection but I'd feel really odd. If you are trying to get away from black, then one of the color choices would be good. I like grey with black, navy, teal, and burgundy. If your feet are likely to shrink back, pick the color that plays well with more of your wardrobe.

Thistle, I don't know if this'll answer your question but I pretty much wear black footwear 70% of the time in the winter months. It goes with everything. Any other option is "nice to have" -- as long as the black footwear is already amply covered.

My blue suede booties? Look awesome with shades of gray. And jeans too. But, they are suede, so I can't wear them in slush and wet weather. They only come out to play when weather is favorable, because I totally baby my shoes.

The snakeskin booties work in all kinds of weather but have drawbacks depending on what I'm sporting for top and bag --- you know I like patterns. So if I'm doing pattern there, the snakeskin footwear seems over the top.

I don't have cognac booties but I do have cognac monk straps. They aren't winter worthy shoes but I can see the value in having cognac boots or booties. Just haven't found the right pair.

Burgundy -- I have had burgundy footwear, nothing right now. My take there is that I always wish instead I had more of a tomato red -- a brighter pop of red. Which I don't do near my face but for footwear makes a nice statement. And acts as a neutral.

If I were to invest in a "nice to have" (i.e., the black booties were well covered already) I just might do tomato red LEATHER (not suede) booties. I haven't seen anything like that though.

Is it the Gentle Souls Pod Pie that you're interested in? I tried it because it runs wide, but returned it because it is cut for a very high volume foot and looked clunky on me. I also felt it did not look like $175. :(

FWIW, a few months back I bought some *raisin* colored clogs (burgundy?) to see if they could replace my black ones, even though I don't really have any bookending tops/toppers. I find them surprisingly neutral and not as harsh looking as black. My gray print fabric clogs go with most of my grays, but my solid gray shooties don't work nearly as well. One of the bloggers out there (Brigette Raes? Imogene?) has given up black shoes altogether and has a visual to convince the reader.

thistle, black would work, and i often wear it with gray. but i tend to think of gray as "softer" than black, so i like to wear a non black shoe so that my footwear is "softer" as well.
(sorry, "softer" is probably not the right word, but i couldn't think of how else to express it)

So, this is going to sound stupid, but is a learning opportunity for me: how is it that navy or burgundy works better with dark grey pants than black?

I get taupe bookends my hair, but with the dirt and slush tracked indoors, taupe is a really tough color for footwear in winter. And, frankly, I don't have the time to care for it.

Wouldn't any of the other colors just add the same third color as black? And if I went with burgundy, how could that match teal?

I've got a pair of pants in a similar shade to yours and I usually wear them with black booties even when I don't have black elsewhere in the outfit. I think it's okay because the pants are dark enough that they kind of blend into the black. I also wear the pants with lighter gray pumps when it's warmer. I have one suede pair in kind of elephant gray, for lack of a better term, and one pair in gray snakeskin.

Really like the Dolce Vitas you're thinking about!

I like the looks of the Dolce Vita, as they are more subdued. The Gentle Souls are pretty, too, but they might be more of a statement. I like the idea of a metallic, if you're going to look in the gray family, because as others have pointed out, grays often don't play well together. I've tried pairs of gray shoes or boots that I had to return because they didn't go with any of the grays in my clothes.

I have always worn black shoes with gray trousers because until recently I have not had any fun colors!
That color reads as a pretty dark gray, does it not?
So to me black would be fine. So would metallic or a lighter color, but it might not be tonal. That can look really good--I've admired combos such as nude shoes with gray pants--but it gives a different look altogether and I had to work with it some and ultimately decided I like darker footwear.

So then you are looking for dark gray or very dark pewter or something.

Meaning, black is fine for footwear with those pants and with teal or burgundy tops, and you can experiment, too.
Sometimes I "bookend" with a black necklace of some sort worn with a colored top.

I am wearing similar trousers to what you are describing, same color in NYDJ and for me they work with black shoes/booties. They also look good with burgundy booties but I don't have a problem with black shoes and grey trousers unless the grey is very light.

I wear grey pants a lot...I fact I have some in " storm heather"...from Talbots, right? If I wear navy on top, I wear navy shoes. Black on top, black shoes. Pink, burgundy, on top, wine colored shoes. Red on top, either black or navy, depends on the scarf or under layer. I have a pair of leopard flats that also work plus a pair of flats that are black lace over silver leather. Sounds dressy, but they aren't. I have been on a hunt for a pair of luggage or tan ballet flats or a refined loafer, but no luck. Maybe when the spring shoe styles come out. But I don't really like light colored shoes, or shoes lighter than the pants. That's just me.

I am with you Susie. My winter uniform will be sweater, trousers, and booties or shoes. Maybe a cardi if I find one.

As such, I feel like I need some sort of cohesion. I think this is why the grey pants never saw much wear. And why I tended to select only black tops for them to go with black footwear.

I do like my shoes to match either my top or pants because the majority of my outfits consist of top + pants + shoes/boots. So 3 separate colors isn't cohesive to my eye. With gray pants, my preference is black, burgundy, navy or a silver or pewter metallic. I agree that a pattern would be nice too. Gray is a tough color to find in shoes, unless it's suede. I like both of the ones you show and think they are worth a try.

ETA I've never been concerned with bookending my hair with my footwear so that colors (no pun intended!) my choices too.

I find mixing greys pretty tricky. I would go for a shade in the range from burgundy to chocolate brown because I like those colours with burgundy and teal. Navy would work too. I'm reminded of both the recent dark red/brown ylf formula and a few months ago, Angie's post on mixing neutrals (ie/ rocking grey, brown, navy and/or black together).
Personally, I would go for same colour value or darker than the pant. Maybe slightly lighter but not much, to be honest. But I think I have a personal issue with wearing shoes lighter than pants

Though currently I don't have any grey trousers, I have snakeskin booties that work with gray.

Otherwise, I'd probably wear my blue suede booties! They play a similar role as black booties do, but are softer all around.

The color is called Storm Heather. I have them in a slim straight leg and boot cut. Making me think a pair of booties would work well.

Because of your fair skin and hair, I would do a lighter color than black: grey, silver, pewter, taupe, ivory, bone, beige, tan, blue. (The shoes don't need to be the same color as your top.)

Silver sounds cool! Are your pants silvery grey or heather grey? I tend to prefer a low contrast match between my pants and footwear...but it does depend on the style of the pant.
