Thanks, Vicki.

Zap, you're a genius. Since I'm not a handbag gal, I think my capsules will be "topper, scarf/belt, and shoes/boots". It certainly helps to think about things that way.

Sarah, I love these metallic cuties, which add style and flair instantly along with comfort. Zap is such a pro and I like the capsule she suggested. I haven't traveled much or for long periods (but, I'd like to!), and on my most recent trip I took some great black AK wedges that looked dressy enough with nice pants and casual for walking the city. Booties or boots always look great, if you have room. Ballet flats don't take up much room, but they may not offer you the support you need. So glad you're sorting out your son's health woes and that he's on the mend. Have fun!

Work on a three item capsule of outerwear, bag, and boots. If the three items look good together, all of your outfits would look cohesive. That's how I pack when I know I will be sightseeing, which often entails being on your outerwear a lot.

I attached a picture I took when I was planning my trip. I planned on this capsule of black boots and bag, red peacoat and grey/black scarf. the only thing that did not make it was the scarf. I chose a leopard print instead.

Thanks for weighing back in, Scarlet. Wow, I'll fit right in with those Seibels and my running shoes! Those are great looks overall for inspirational OTG - yay! I wish I'd saved all of my nursing camis so I could ship them over to you now. Darn.

Carole and Zap - thanks for the supportive words about DS. We're so relieved. Now to select which particular boots will make the trip...

Without seeing responses, based on what I saw ( I went to Paris and London last November) I would go with something comfortable, low heeled or no heel, water resistant or waterproof and a bit dressy. I would stick with some type of boot for most of the daytime stuff. I really did not see many sneakers, other than leather converse, Isabel Marant and Ash look alikes.

I brought a bunch of shoes, BIG mistake, they were just dead weight. I ended up wearing a pair of SW boots I bought during day 2 of my trip for the rest of my vacation.

I could have done with the SW boots, and the pair of dressy booties I wore for the evening events I attended.

P.S. I am very happy you DS in on the mend;)

I love the Siebels! The metallic version seems so versatile and a little dressed up for a tennis shoe. A pair of booties for a dressier option sounds like a good plan. Personally, I would make sure I could walk miles in them before counting them as an option.

So happy your son is doing so much better. What a relief that must be. Can;t wait to see and hear more about your trip!

Sarah, I swear as long as you look deliberate about it, it's totally legitimate. That's also why I decided to go for my magenta Nikes recently. Since I am currently only wearing winter boots right now (and spending money experimenting on nursing wear), I'll wait till spring to see if I can justify oxfords. Really I should be shoe purging to make more room around here

Thanks, Scarlet, I was hoping you would weigh in. I can't believe athletic shoes (or "trainers" as my British MIL would call them) have hit the streets of Europe! I was certainly going to bring mine for hiking/running, but hadn't dared hope I could wear them fashionably, as well. I do have some rather interesting ones (see pic), only because they're "grippy" and good for running in MN winters. Do you think they'd pass for fashion in Europe?! ; )

I will be testing out inserts in all of my boots. And I'll keep you all posted on my metallic Seibels. The oxfords are also a great idea. I'll have to keep an eye for a pair and give them some serious consideration. The ones you linked to are great, but I do like the idea of a "warmer" metallic, if that makes sense (to bookend my hair, I guess).

Hi Sarah, so glad that your son is doing better now! What a stress that must have been. I missed lots of school for travel as a child which drove the school system batty, but I am pretty sure it did me lots of good. Some of my best childhood memories actually because it was one of the few times we were really all together as a family since my dad worked/traveled a lot. Anyway.
I think boots or booties are a great idea, and consider adding an insert for additional support if necessary. Beyond that I just have to say consider some metallic oxfords I would love some myself so I am trying to live vicariously through you.
http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/co.....n=category

The Siebels are cute though.

ETA: Oh yeah, and just in case you don't want to buy new shoes at all, athletic running shoes have finally hit Europe as a street trend. I say finally as I recall it was THE thing to wear in the U.S. in the mid nineties.

ETA2: Finally found the link--check this cool MOTG outfit featuring metalic oxfords (although the Siebels would work too).

You've gotten some great advice , but I'll throw in my 2 cents. I think those shoes are cute and perfectly fashionable enough for Europe. Just make sure they feel like a dream and have plenty of cushion. The cobblestones are brutal.

I was in Europe in June last year, and oddly enough the weather was like what you described. Counting on warm weather, I only took one pair of Nikes (a fashion sneaker, boo) and the rest sandals. I ended up wearing Dansko sandals with my jeans and trench coat. It looked kind of silly, but they were the comfiest.

I don't know about England, but Paris was the only place I felt like athletic sneakers would have gotten me dirty looks. I'm thinking about taking them next time, and I'm not at a sneaker kind of gal at all. I tried on a million shoes with very little luck.

You are very smart to start your shoe planning early.

Sarah, I've missed you! I'm so sorry to hear about your son's illness and your sabbatical, but I'm glad to hear that your son is doing better and that you have a fabulous trip to look forward to. We were stationed overseas when DS was a baby and DD was in middle school. Her teachers never minded when we pulled her out of school to travel. They figured that that was an education in itself. Have a wonderful time!

The shoes look comfy and stylish, and you do want your feet to be happy with all the walking you'll be doing. I second the others about taking a pair of boots along too.

Sarah, I am so sorry you son was sick and so glad he is feeling better now. Family trip to Europe sounds amazing!
We are going to Europe in the beginning of March and I have the same dilemma - what to pack for footwear. I was in Paris in the end of March and beginning of April last year and wore my combat boots and flat oxfords there and was very comfortable. Comfortable boots and booties are great for travel and it will not be too hot for them at this time of the year. It may also rain there at this time, especially in England - how those shoes for rainy days?

I am glad your son is doing better!

I was also puzzled by the shoe issue when we went to Italy (that was in early November so probably similar weather to your trip). I think the Seibels look good. The other shoes that could work for this type of walking are Born Arletta oxfords http://www.zappos.com/born-arl.....25004930:s (they come in a few different colors). They are very soft, although the soles are not very thick so could be a problem on cobblestones, I am not sure.

Amazon has a metallic option, too.

I'll put in a plug for sensible shoes. Although European women are often thoughtful and conscientious dressers, they wear comfortable shoes!! They use public transportation and walk a lot (often not on perfectly smooth paved surfaces). I agonized over shoes before a business trip to Spain last year and need not have. Almost none of the women I met were wearing heels--or at least heels of any height. It was a wonder to walk past shoe store windows and see nary a high heeled shoe in sight. They thought it was completely normal to leave our meeting and walk a mile or more to where we were having lunch and then walk back again.

Be sure to take more than one pair of walking shoes as a change will rest your feet and allow the shoes to dry out. I've always avoided anthing resembling sneakers in Europe because Rick Steves (travel show on PBS on travel in Europe) says pick pockets can spot you as a tourist from blocks away by your shoes (especially white athletic shoes). Just saying. I agree that thick soles are important. I like athletic flats. they are also easier to wear for plane travel when shoes need to be removed and put back on quickly at security.

We are so relieved to finally have a diagnosis to work with, and our son's Vitamin D levels are back up to where they are supposed to be - now we're working on the iron.

I have a friend who raved about wearing her Seibels all over Italy for several weeks. So far I have yet to find a pair that fit my bad feet just right. If they are comfortable, I say go for them.

On trips to Europe my most important items to take along are comfortable shoes. I remember a quote from some advice book long ago: "You are going to see, and not to be seen." When you are walking miles over cobblestones and rough sidewalks you won't be comparing yourself to those locals who are tottering along on impossibly high heels. They may just be crossing the street.

Although I love pretty shoes when I'm not going to be walking around a lot, when I have a lot of errands to run or when I travel I throw foot fashion out the window. (Not the rest of my outfit, though ) I know I'm in the minority but I LOVE my plain black Skechers Shape-Ups, even though they don't actually do the butt-tightening etc that the ads claim. These shoes are as ugly as the day is long, but they are like walking on pillows, and I don't want to be in pain just so people I don't know and will never see again, and who couldn't care less about me, might look at me as I hobble by and think "cute shoes."

Having said that, those Josef Seibel shoes are wondrous and I hope you get them. They would go with everything and look adorable doing it. I just think a back-up pair is well worth it, even though I'm on Team Pack Light too. Three weeks in a single pair of shoes is a lot to ask of your feet and they will appreciate the variety (especially on rainy days when you don't want to risk ruining such adorable shoes).

My parents just went to Rome and walked for hours a day and were actually in a fair amount of pain because of all the miles they logged on cobblestones--all that uneven distribution of weight on every step--so if you're going to be walking a lot in the old parts of cities, I would urge you to consider a pair of shoes with a really thick sole. Like, oh, I don't know, Skechers?

I am glad your son is doing better! A trip somewhere warm and tropical every winter sounds like a great idea. It would be a great idea no matter the circumstances!

I like the shoes. Have you tried them on for comfort? I have never been to Europe, so I am not sure if they are too casual or not. In America, they would be fine!

I like these shoes a lot! The metallic is so fun!

I am really glad you figured out what was wrong with your son. That must have been hard to figure out as it doesn't sound at all common! The great thing is that is sounds very cureable!

I love Rita's idea of making sure you get to a sunny place every winter!

I don't see anything wrong with these, Sarah. Sure they are sneakers, so more casual footwear, but the metallic colour makes them a little more refined, and it's all in how you wear them. I love these for a polished casual look with jeans and trousers. And they look super comfy too.

I agree that taking a pair of boots or booties, or oxfords is a great idea. Rain and cool weather are a possibility:-)

Also: I am so sorry to hear your sabbatical won't be happening, but the most important thing is that your son is feeling better!! And you all have this fantastic trip to look forward too!-)

So glad your son is doing better! And glad you will get a trip in.

I like these a lot for travel walking shoes. They will be fun. I would also bring a comfortable bootie. Or plan to buy some!

And I'm so glad to hear your son is doing well! I think you need to plan a trip to the Caribbean every winter so he can plop his butt on the beach, warm up and get his vitamin D for the winter. It works!

It has been over ten years since I've last been to Europe, but dressier than the typical American look was definitely the norm then.
