My toe pain is flaring up again (also elbow pain), and I'm so glad I bought more comfortable shoes this year. I already had some comfortable ones, but not all of them were, so I replaced the ones that were bothering me. When you have fussy feet like mine, it's difficult to find comfortable shoes that are also stylish, but it can be done.

My feet have gotten quite ugly over the years from "breaking in" shoes, so now I prefer comfortable always. At the same time, they have to be cute. I work in retail.

Last year I got rid of most of my shoes with heels. I am quite petite and many would say I should be wearing heels, but I just can't. They're too uncomfortable. I had shoes that I could wear only for the duration of a fifty-minute class if the classroom was on the same corridor as my office. (I am a university professor.) Coincidentally, I also fell a couple of times while wearing said shoes. On both occasions, it was because I tripped on obstacles, so the fault was not the footwear, but I feel that the shoes contributed to the hardness of the falls.

If I am shoe shopping online, the first thing I look for in the reviews is the comfort level..I, too, agree with Deb...I have feet that desire to be nude, pampered, loved and taken such rich care of..smile... I absolutely will not buy any shoes if I am not sure they are comfortable...That is even the more expensive designer ones...Good that the rest of me is not such a kept woman as my feet...smile...

I never intentionally buy uncomfortable shoes and aim for 12 hour shoes, but generally find out later whether they are 4, 6, or 8 hour shoes. I am learning that I need to wear my mom's cast-off Crocs when I am around the house; if not the pain in my uber fussy feet keeps me awake at night.

I do sometimes sacrifice comfort for aesthetics, but I always keep in mind the situation and don't push myself over my limit. For instance, I have a pair of black booties with a 3" stiletto heel that go with lots of outfits and that I get a lot of compliments on, but they aren't very comfy at all. They are pretty snug fitting, so I can't add an insole or anything to help it. So I wear them if I know I will be sitting a lot or if I know I will be out for only a couple of hours. But because these really add the perfect finishing touch to an outfit, I keep them and wear them regularly. If I know I will be on my feet for some hours, I wear my Aravon mary janes, which are a comfort shoe but are more streamlined than most and are very acceptable with my style.

Being able to do a lot of walking is a top priority for me and while I don't expect to be able to walk long distances in all my shoes I can't justify hurting my feet for ANY shoes. I'm horrified and ashamed at damage to my feet caused by a poor choice in footwear and I like my feet to look good naked too. I have daughters and as the one out in front sending back news about aging I try to set a good example.
Trying many different brands and being willing to pay more has allowed me to supply all my different shoe needs comfortably. Even high heels.

I do have some shoes for dressy occasions that are about 4-5 hour shoes for sitting and standing and could not be worn all day. They acutally are "walkable" at first, so I can stride into said dressy function, but then things deteriorate after too many hours.
I've been on the fence about whether even that is acceptable and I think I'm working toward a sort of compromise.
One of the shoes in question is a pump I had thought would actually work better (because it seems so comfortable at first) and I have it in black and a kind of nude. For me the style and heel height really do appeal to me with the dressy dress or dressy pants for special occasions--I hate to admit that!

These to me are actual "upgrades" for some other shoes that had the same limited wear issues.
When I get some spring-cleaning time, I'm going to to through all of these and probably keep just the 2 pair and have one black/one nude " marginal comfort shoe capsule" for now. Already I gearing any dressy items around just those 2 shoe colors; I can never just run out and find shoes for special events or match a particular dress.

Going forward, I'm keeping all of these issues in mind for dressy capsule--either "less dressy" and to heck with it, or more avant garde choices such as trousers that tolerate (possibly by draping over, actually, rather than showcasing) different shoes.

I won't compromise looks for comfort, or vice versa. I have found fab shoes that work with my style AND are comfortable. I walk a lot, and in the last year my feet seem to have gotten a bit more sensitive. So my highest heels and my more borderline-uncomfortable shoes are going unworn. I've sold the ones that just don't make the cut anymore, and there are a few more on the chopping block.

Of course, I'm like a lot of others here, in that I have certain shoes that are 4-hour, 8-hour, etc. I'm always happy to take off my shoes at the end of a day (or sometimes the moment I get home), but not necessarily because my feet are uncomfortable -- just that they're ready for a break from confinement.

Lol @ Deb. :-)

It depends on the shoe and what I need it for. My baseline level of comfort for an all-day shoe is different from an evening 'sitting' shoe (i.e. something I'd wear to go out to dinner and a movie). Like Ummlila, I won't wear ugly shoes just because they are comfortable. I also won't wear really uncomfortable shoes just because they are pretty! But I'm lucky that I have relatively unfussy feet, so having to trade beauty for comfort is not and issue for me just yet. I can always find stylish shoes that are all-day comfy.

As for evening shoes -- which for me means high heels -- well, that's different. They have to be comfy to walk around in for about two hours. I was not a high-heel wearer in my youth, because in my neck of the woods, 'fancy' shoes were a bit gauche. I finished high school right as the grunge movement got going, and lived very close to the grunge epicentre of Seattle. And to add to this, I was studying biology (a 'crunchy' discipline) at a very left-leaning university. Looking 'done up' was not something we EVER did! Plus, the general wisdom was that 'all high heels are painful and destroy your feet'. In my mid-twenties, I did have a couple of pairs of lovely high-heeled sandals that I bought to wear to weddings, but these were super uncomfortable and I so I assumed that the general wisdom was correct.

It turns out that this is just a persistent myth. You CAN have heels that are comfortable, but you need to search and you need to pay. Well-made shoes cost more, generally. They shouldn't pinch or rub. What they can do, no matter how good they are, is cause aching arches by the end of a long evening of standing around, but that's simply because the heel forces my foot into a steep angle, and of course my feet don't appreciate that. But for moderate periods of time, good-quality, comfortable high heels are totally reasonable.

I don't have any shoes that are truly uncomfortable but I have shoes for different functions. I have some that are perfectly fine for a dinner out but I wouldn't wear if I was going to be on my feet much. As long as I wear them at the appropriate times they are all comfortable.

I used to make a hobby of buying beautiful, but usually unwearable, shoes. I would wear them once, maybe, and never again. However, my lifestyle has become more practical since then, and I generally only buy shoes that I can wear for a full day. I wore a pair of slip-on sneakers today that I was sure were comfortable, but weren't. Since I could make it through the day, and because they are flat and practical, I will give them another shot. But overall, only shoes that pass the all day wear test make it in my wardrobe. I have enough "several hour sitting shoes" to last me a lifetime!

I don't think it's aesthetically pleasing to have a grimaced face while trying to stand or stump around in bloody swollen crippled feet.

My feet are getting more and more particular as I age. I'm practically my mother these days -- around my age (give or take) she bought a pair of New Balance sneakers, found her feet bliss, and never looked back... she duplicated those sneakers like bunnies (I have been her hook up, since I live near an outlet), so she could rotate. I remember thinking it was silly. I am now starting to get it!!!

I am just a few years older than Angie but I thoroughly appreciate that she cannot tolerate uncomfortable shoes. I thought it was just me, I am not as fit as Angie. I do watch this forum for footwear recommendations in particular, because I still want a modicum of fashion, but uncomfortable-yet-fashionable shoes aren't worth the price to me anymore. No more "sitting shoes" for me. I've got to be able to stand & walk in them, at least 4 hours, or forget it.

I won't wear unattractive shoes just because they are comfortable. To me, shoes are one of the most important elements of a look, so I don't want them to drag it down. Having said that, I will only rarely wear e.g. a three and a half inch heel and never four inches.

No! I used to when I was younger. A certain level of pinching and squeezing was par for the course; and for special occasions I could endure even more.

Until the day when a pair of low kitten-heeled pointy-toe pumps from J Crew hurt my feet so much, they made it impossible to take another step--for not only were my feet miserable, but my knees started to hurt. This was at an all-day job interview and I carried the shoes in my hands at the end.

So, never again! I might wear something slightly uncomfortable--but only very slightly--and only if I know it's for a short period of time when I won't have to stand or walk for very long.

I like to think all of my shoes are cute, but I love having cute feet for summer so no matter how cute a shoe is it stays at the store if it is not immediately comfortable. I don't subscribe to breaking in a shoe. I don't want the matching broken-in feet.

I have a couple that at uncomfortable in the sense that they aren't the most comfortable... I mean really, who is "comfortable in a stiletto over 2"?? And sometimes those higher pairs will get to me at the end of the day. I also try to make a point not to wear those kind of shoes two days in a row, but I still have more heels than flats.

I have the same outlook as Gaylene. I won't wear heels more than and inch or so, and anything uncomfortable generally won't get worn, so most of my shoes are either good for all day or at least 5 hours of active wear. I don't see the point in being uncomfortable as it doesn't add good things to my life.

My fussy feet demand comfort these days, so I don't wear uncomfortable shoes for any reason.

Uncomfortable--never, but not suitable for walking in comfortably all day--a few pairs.

I learned my lesson when I used to spend hours standing in front of students, coupled by ten-minute jogs between buildings carrying armloads of books and papers. Painful feet made it hard to concentrate on anything else, so any shoe that wasn't as comfortable at the end of the day as at the beginning got purged, no matter how gorgeous. My two pairs of shoes that aren't 12-hour shoes are 5-6 hours of standing and walking shoes. Anything less just isn't worth it to me.

I have different shoes for different activities. I have some strictly "sitting shoes" meaning I carry them to the office and change at my desk. That being said, I have to at least be able to walk around the office a bit without pain. I am hanging on to a few pairs that I really like the look of but know I can't even wear them at my desk for very long. I'm hoping I'll get them stretched one of these days. If I'm going to be standing or walking outside for any period of time, I do not wear uncomfortable shoes. However there are times when even a comfortable shoe or boot will start to bug after a few hours with feet swelling, etc. I've heard of people who take aspirin or other pain meds to help ease the pain of shoes - no, just no.

I'm glad to take off all my shoes at the end of the day, some more than others. I always assumed everyone felt that way. I mean, barefoot (assuming you're just sitting around and don't need support) is always more comfy, right?

I've eliminated all of the actively uncomfortable shoes from my wardrobe; I'm getting too old for that &!~#. But in Angie parlance, I've still got some four hour shoes, mostly eight hour shoes and a few twelve hour shoes.

That's an interesting question. I am happy to take off all and any shoes and boots at the end of the day. Not from my feet absolutely killing me or anything, but usually enough is enough. There are certainly boots and shoes I still wear when I know I'm not walking anywhere very far or having to stand for hours on end, but those pair are getting fewer and farther between. However, when sexy calls, sometimes there's no option I don't do crazy pointy and high, but I will don an uncomfortable shoe if it's part of the look I want.
