To me, dowdy/frumpy occurs when you veer into the "thick soles with laces" sort of look. But I resigned myself to "comfort shoes" years ago when I decided it was more important to me to not deal with painful feet (and be able to run and walk) than to have cruel shoes. There are killer shoes style wise, and killer shoes pain wise and killer shoes comfort wise. I prefer the latter. QVC carries a lot of Vionic brand shoes, and I look at their site a lot, but have never purchased from them.
