Thanks everyone. I really hope the dress works out. I guess the taupe oxfords wouldn't mean the most fun shoe possible, but it is a combination that wouldn't look too strange, I think. I will keep looking for a pair of shoes in the meantime!

Seconding Dakotacheryl on your exceptional restraint and thoughtfulness when purchasing clothes. I do admire your serious, disciplined approach--just hope you are having fun, too! Taupe oxfords don't exactly sound like fun, but I'll be curious to see that combo!

Omg Astrid, I love this EBay dress. It's perfect. It has so much character and it's got a lovely cut.

I'm with Dakotacheryl here....you sure are focused on what you want and what will/will not work for your wardrobe as a whole. Very inspiring!

I can't wait for that dress to get to you so that we can all see it with the taupe oxfords. Fingers crossed!

Sounds like you are thinking about creating more of a "special occasion capsule" than just dressing for one event. That's a n excellent idea, particularly since you keep a small, well curated wardrobe. Hope the dress works out!

Greyscale, thanks! That's what I was thinking too...

Diana, thanks! I agree. And I also thought of dainty Oxfords as an option...

Thank you, Gaylene! It's already on its way.

Tulle, thanks! Yes, I would wear my taupe Oxfords with it. I don't have any other shoes that would be suitable. I do have some brands that have a much bigger chance of success, but you have to look hard for the right styles. Most sandal styles at the moment have fixed straps anyway, but even if they had buckles extra holes wouldn't help much - I don't need more volume on top but more width in the soles (especially in front). I've said that my Birks are just wide enough, but I have the straps in the second tightest settings (I think).

That dress does look more like you, and a very useful, dress-up-or-down type of thing to have in your wardrobe. Is it possible that a pair of flats you might already have would work with it? Metallic silver or pewter would be beautiful. And if not, have you learned from experience that certain brands tend always to fit your feet? (My husband has very wide feet, too, and has stopped buying from all but 3 companies, because only those fit reliably.) If so, I would just look at their sites, and pick whatever suits the dress best for formal wear. Then you'll have your dressy "uniform" waiting in your closet, ready to be worn with different accessories for many occasions. On the other hand, it's not always a bad thing to dress outside your usual style for a special event, and it's possible that borrowing your sister's dress might give you an unexpected lift. So I'd say, buy the LGD, keep it for its beauty & practicality, but try the black one on again before you decide what to wear that night!
One last thought: I have the opposite fitting problem (narrow feet) and have found that shoes & sandals with multiple buckled straps can be very helpful: I just make extra holes in the straps to tighten the fit. Have you tried punching extra holes to loosen straps, or are most straps just too short?

Thanks Kiwigal, Mander and Smittie - I did buy the dress!!! I just couldn't resist. And the price wasn't over the top. Keep you're fingers crossed that it fits just like I think it will. Smittie, no flip flops needed, I think I'm going to wear my taupe Oxfords if I don't find the right shoe in time and will invest in some fancy laces, like Approprio suggested. I think it would work with this dress.

Dilemmas!!!

I think both your sisters dress and the new dress are very pretty. I have been in similar situations in the past and I have tended to make do.. It sounds like you are an easier fit for clothing then shoes ( I am the opposite).

It often does come together quite quickly, I have borrowed dresses or jewelry or even shoes from friends at times due to budget, or travel or even time,. If my outfit is not my perfect one I make sure I love my hair and makeup!!

Thanks Mander! I would buy shoes for that price, if they were the right ones and comfortable. I always have very few shoes but try to get quality. I went on the Josef Seibel website for Germany, but I found only the Fiona - the other two don't seem to be available here.

Gaah, I even went to the EU version of the website! But now when I click on it all I get is the homepage. I hate that.

Anyway the ones I was looking at are all around 80 Euros, which would be way too much for my budget but could be worth it, perhaps. The styles are called:

- Kira 09 (black sandal with cork sole, a bit of a wedge/platform)

- Mokassetta 287 (black cage style sandal, bit of a heel)

- Fiona 04 (black flat with laces on top, very much like those Irish dancing shoes! but 99 Euros!)

Thanks Elizabeth. Yes, it sounds ridiculous right? Although I think this one would be wearable on different occasions: theatre, Christmas, maybe even on special occasion days. Since it's silk it doesn't read "evening dress only" to me. Also I could maybe see myself pairing my old black oxfords with it - I wanted to ask a local cobbler if it's possible to fix them up and how much it be anyway.

Sandy, thanks! Not sure I want heels, even if they're wedges. Also ballet flat styles are tricky...

Tulle, thanks! It's not just a case of getting straps to stretch a bit with sandals for me - I wear a 37.5 and with a lot of brands I'd really need the width of a size 39. I wear a normal width (not narrow) in Birkenstocks and they're just wide enough.

And I have found a dress on Ebay that I really like - graphit colored silk. It would be knee length on me. I'm really considering it, it could be my LGD. Not really less dressy than the first one, but much more my thing. What do you think?

I just looked at the earlier post, having missed it before, and I must say that the outfit you put together last time was inspired. You looked adorable, and I love your curls! Your sister's dress is classically pretty and should do very nicely for you this time. As for shoes, the fact that this is a Summer event makes sandals the obvious choice to me. And you're in luck with so many fashionable lower-heeled strappy styles out there. I wouldn't go too flat, but an inch or two can still make for a comfortably dressy shoe, and if it's real leather, the straps should stretch to accommodate a wider foot. Have a wonderful time!

Back to the dress, I think it has an appealing Audrey Hepburn vibe with that ballet neckline. Have you considered a ballet wedge shoe?

Enjoy the gala, it sounds wonderful!

Joy, thanks! Yes I will probably wear some of their jewelry, but I won't know until the day what range of stuff my friend will have with her. So I can't plan that. Last time I wore rather small and simple pieces, anything else wouldn't have worked with my outfit. I agree that a long skirt hides the shoes, last time they weren't very noticeable either.

Thanks Mander! Those Josef Seibel links don't work for me, they just take me to the main page. Must be an IP issue.

Gaylene, I like how you're thinking. I'm not ordering the sandals however - they're still 70€ plus shipping costs plus potential return costs and I don't want to be tempted to keep them. I guess I can understand the argument of wearing the sandals with my more casual things, but fact is that we haven't had a lot of sandal weather over the past few years. I just don't think they would get enough wear to justify the price right now, with my budget.

You may have good luck finding a long skirt on eBay or thrifting or a clearance rack. I have picked up a couple of black ones for just-in-case in velvet and in a light weight wool. If you are wearing some of the jewelry, a very simple dark top would work. Shoes with a long dress or skirt are usually not very noticeable. With your beautiful hair and smile, no one will be looking closely at your feet.
