With a more temperate climate my shoes don’t get dirty enough to muck up my nice shoe shelves in the bedroom closet. And no, they don’t smell! This is the summer set-up.

ETA: my heavy duty hiking shoes and boots stay in the garage so mud doesn’t get tracked in, and I have a pair of slip-on sneakers that stay next to our back door that I can put on quickly to take kitchen trash out or feed the dogs on the back porch.

I have a pair of Shoes for Crews that I use for the non-slip aspect of taking out trash, household chores with lots of stair climbing. These do develop an odor and I remove the insoles and wash them in Mr. Clean, that I like the smell of. Otherwise, for any biological odors on anything I like Febreze pet odor eliminator. Worked a treat on a pair of boots I got from thrift store that smelled musty. Only solution I found that worked for that. Also works on Labrador smell on clothes but I gave up after the first week and now we all smell like a dog.

My setup is almost exactly as Lisa’s, except I’m fortunate I only have two people here, not three. Further details: current everyday shoes and sneakers on wire shelves in my bedroom closet, dressy and out of season shoes (sandals, booties alternating) in plastic boxes stacked in my guest room closet, hiking shoes and outdoor boots in coat closet by the front door. If it’s wet out, I’ll chose one of these instead of sneakers so I track in less mess.

Husband’s assortment of athletic shoes is kept in an under-bed bin. His everyday shoes and boots are in the coat closet when not scattered around the front hall.

Another method chosen by my daughter with three young children is a large shoe rack kept just outside the door in the garage. I’ve never seen kids with so many shoes. When I was a child, we had a new pair of shoes, often red leather oxfords, once or twice a year as we grew. When we got into high school, we added white sneakers for gym class, and then expanded the collection as our babysitting money allowed.

My own girls were luckier, with sneakers, school shoes and church shoes every few months. My memory does include a funny incident, so I may be underestimating. One summer when my older daughter was a young teen, my husband was packing the car for a vacation. Each daughter brought out a large duffel to be added. When the older brought out a second duffel, even larger and much heavier, he asked her what was in it as he tried to fit it in the trunk. She said “just my shoes” and was promptly instructed to repack. Haha.

lyn67 - yes you are right, my closet is shallower Ikea Pax , I think 39x75. Rest of the family has 39x100, and it fits 4 pairs in a basket. I am actually thinking of replacing baskets with slanted shelves like in bottom part because I can squeeze 4 pairs there, especially if they are not boots.

*carries off that closet*
I haven't noticed a smell from my shoes, but there are always things that can be put inside them- cedar or whatnot.

My closet is tiny, and is storing 2 stability balls besides my clothes. My sandals and mules are in a bin on the shelf for now.
My boots/booties are on little bookshelves by the door of that room (my "woman cave"). My Birkies and sneakers are in an ottomon in the living room, since they're worn daily for hiking.

My Pax is 58cm deep and 100 cm wide and was curious how many shoes can hold a basket? Think your closet has to be the sleeker one, maybe an 39cmx75cm?
Thanx for your help.

I keep my shoes in a small shoe rack that I keep in my closet. In the winter, often-worn boots and shoes (I have three pairs that are go-tos) stay in the entryway. Everything else is in the closet. I don't notice any funky smells. Shoes that I wear out, especially in wet weather, are removed at the entryway to dry and are put back in the shoe rack when they are dry.

Speaking of cultural differences, in our neighborhood most of the 1950s ranch houses that go on the market are knocked down and developers are putting up very large and fancy houses for the Chinese immigrant community. They all have huge and elaborate master closets, but I always notice there's no shoe storage -- I guess they store their shoes somewhere other than in the house? Garage maybe?

An interesting question. Have never noticed any smell from my shoes with the exception of my bakery shoes - which smell like beer... haha! The smell of bread dough and beer is the same; it’s gotta be the yeast. Well, after all, ‘beer bread.’ Anyways, they get a boot tray and the beer scent dissipates by the time I’m home usually. Otherwise, I have shoe shelves in my bedroom closet and under bed shoe storage, and a shoe basket for shoes in use.

I have no foyer coat closet or anything like that. And I suppose I might say that half the time, I enter and exit my home New Orleans style, through my bedroom.

I do have house shoes. I leave my garden shoes outside.

I will say, we take shoes off when we enter the house (via mudroom). Shoes stay in that room until they are wiped off/cleaned and carried up to the bedroom.

Gear shoes (snowboots, rain boots, summer pool slides, trash-taking-out shoes), and kids shoes stay in shelves in the mudroom/laundry room.

I am scratching my head about the "Canadian" thing, too. Maybe it's because on previous threads some of us Canucks have mentioned that we do not wear shoes indoors ...or have special indoor shoes for parties, etc. That's just because winter footwear gets filthy and wet here -- you can't track that stuff inside!

Now that we're not going anywhere else, some of us have special inside shoes just for our own houses... Floors get cold in this country in winter....slippers are okay but not fashionable and not supportive...

Anyway, on the subject of closet storage for shoes... mine are all over the house. I keep the most worn casual shoes/ boots in the front hall closet and/ or garage, and switch them out by season. I don't wear these indoors, so remove them (or put them on) when I'm about to go out.

I keep less frequently worn and dressier shoes in my bedroom closet on a rack on the floor and have never noticed odours being a problem.

And I keep out of season shoes in a storage container in the basement. :)

" Canadian thing " - hahahahaha! Well, as a true Canadian, I can say : 1. I have never noticed , thought of, or experienced odor in my house from shoes - or feet - that any of us own. Hmm.
2. I have tons of shoes. In season shoes are in my bedroom closet - not sure where else they'd go? Boots for outdoors are in the front hall closet in a huge messy heap which I am ashamed of . Out of season shoes are stored away in bins and stacked in our laundry room. I am driven insane daily by the lack of space at our front door entry way (it's a narrow hallway into the rest of the condo ) and with 3 of us and our various boots, it can become a big mess every day . But - what can you do? Work with what you have

My "in service" shoes should be in the coat closet but more often are lined up near the entry door, which I don't love, and out of season shoes are in my bedroom closet but even though they're cleaned first I don 't love this either.

We had this discussion once before when I redid my closet. I also dislike keeping them in an enclosed space with my clothing. (7th generation American, BTW, so no, not a "Canadian thing") I ended up needing to do so due to space (my booties sit just below my clothing), so I got some charcoal inserts off amazon, and so far they have totally worked!

We also do not wear shoes indoors, so it's annoying because I have to choose a pair and then take them off to walk across the house to the front door. I do keep 1 pair of purpose-specific shoes by each external door but they are for wearing in the garden.

I also have under bed bins with shoes as well, and recently had to add a behind the door rack for flats, which is now in our closet. I turn the shoes so the soles face the door. I think this help keep the shoes aired out a bit. So far no issues with smell or dirt.

My ideal setup would be a nice big shoes closet with full mirror in the foyer.

I keep my shoes in my closet in our bedroom :)
I wipe them after use and put into their boxes, stack boxes on the floor labels facing out. Only my casual, everyday shoes are on the shoe rack in the closet near the entrance.

Is this one of those Canadian shoe things? It would never occur to me to keep shoes anywhere but my bedroom closet. *shrug emoji*

Maybe they don't have walk in closets right by the bedroom? Heh.. I have my wardrobe in a cabinet in a spare bedroom, but no shoe storage there. Shoes goes in the hall, as we don't wear shoes indoors here.

I keep mine in the spare bedroom, it’s easier for me because it’s a lotta shoes & there’s more space in there.
I like your setup!

My DH was set against keeping shoes in our bedroom, so we put a shoe closets in the entryway. This is mine, out of season shoes are on higher shelves and I make switch seasonally.

I do keep shoes in the closet--I use the area above the closet rod, with "shoe stacker" shelves, which gives me 3 rows across, or room for 16-24 pairs of shoes--but mostly flats; boots go on top of stackers so have room to ceiling. I do have to use a stepstool to reach to top row. I have luxury of spare bedroom closet so can keep storage totes and out of season items, luggage and so forth in another closet.
