I love your Born perforated sneakers and pleased the clogs are working out.

I really love the Madalayn and the Minka sandals.

And stay away from the Mules - my osteo and massage therapist tell me of the back and leg problems they can cause. They cause me grief in my feet and achilles. I know some of them work for people - but I feel it is not worth the risk given your back pain. I do wear slides but only for occasions without much walking and I can notice those days compared to sandals or shoes that have a back.

Smittie - ooh, I like the look of the Naot Cupids. I'm also going to explore some more Danskos, this time open toed sandals. Thanks for the suggestions!

My plan is to start ordering shoes to try in the next month or so; I blew this month's budget with the clogs.

I would return the Naturalizers as they sound like a sales-googles purchase I like the Naot 'Pixie' or 'Vixen' or 'Rianna' sandals for a different vibe. These have a 1.something" heel height.

Also loving the Dansko clogs!

Thank you, Kathie - that’s good info about Hispanitas. I’ve thought about Fly London but I just don’t love the aesthetic of most of them, I think they’d look bulky on my relatively delicate looking feet. They would work, though.

SarahD8 - good thought. I’ll added Kork Ease to the list to try.

Donna - lots of good information, thank you! I love my perforated Dansko so far. The details elevate the look nicely. I think the Teva footbed is a bit squishy for my needs. Saris don’t tend to fit me well, so I’d have to size down. As for the backless clogs, I’m usually okay at keeping backless shoes on.

Joy - I appreciate this insight! That is a difficult proposition as I haven’t found a shoe that completely alleviates my pain when walking outside. Dansko comes the closest. It also depends on the day and the pain may not be apparent right away. I crave variety. I also have shoes that aren’t suitable right now but I don’t want to get rid of - only a few really truly work to alleviate most of my pain outside, maybe fave pairs of closed toe shoes and two sandals. All had to be bought since this started, none cheap. I have many more shoes than those though! This includes some I bought since this started that I like but don’t alleviate pain as well as the others.

I’m going to try to be better about carrying inside shoes to work, since that’s the best solution right now. That includes stuff like short booties, though! It seems ridiculous to treat those as inside shoes, but that’s where I am.

My goal is to not buy any more "inside shoes" for now, but testing them is hard, as I stated in the post.

Ipden89 - I will definitely keep Fitflop in mind. Their embellished styles are fun and a little more elevated in style than my Vionic sandals.

Viva - I think they’re on the lower side of Medium volume, if that makes sense. They fit in the sandals okay but the material rubs. I think my feet are extra fussy about that sort of thing.

I really like the perforated black Danskos - that little pattern elevates the look, I think. Finding shoes that work is not easy! I'm glad you've managed to find a few pairs.

I want a pair of those Dansko sandals for this summer, although I am a little concerned that they hurt the tops of your feet. Are your feet high or low volume?

I have the fitflop slides in the first comment. They are wonderful! I'm a kindergarten teacher so I'm my feet all day. Plus, I have had two bouts of plantar fasciitis. I do wear Dansko clogs a lot in the colder months.

Don't wear any shoe that causes discomfort of any kind. You will start walking differently to alleviate it and may cause damage to knees, hips or back as a result, not to mention corns, hammer toes and bunions.

I'm wearing my blue Dansko perfs right now! The flowered ones are my newest clogs. Warning: I find the Softspots (which I have in a gray pattern) too squishy to provide much support. I highly recommend the Fly London sandal (which I have in silver/pewter); they provide a TON of support probably due to the foot coverage and lacing. My Teva wedges are comfortable and provide a little support but not walking in a museum support IMHO. I also have the super casual Tevas. I'm thinking about the Puma flatforms, but it didn't get warm enough for my Reynaud's toes to wear the Tevas last summer so I can't justify the purchase unless they are marked down AND I feel they are comfortable enough to take on vacation where it's warmer. Regular but covered sandals like the Me Toos also give support. Oxfords can also work for me; I haven't noticed that the lug soled Sartos are any more cushioning than regular soles, but I put an insole in the regular soles so maybe that makes up for it.

You are brave with those Born backless clogs. I would kick them off, especially running up and down stairs.

I don't have many specific suggestions, but I really like the finds Kathie posted! The first three especially look like you imo.

One more idea- Fly London brand. I have no personal experience with them, but a colleague who lives in Brooklyn, and spent years commuting to Columbia, swears by them. In fact, I've only seen her in Fly London or Dansko brand shoes.

Waving at a fellow "Dansko commuter! I've really been enjoying my Hispanitas. Not quite as much of a comfort shoe as Danskos, but quite supportive, and I like the footbed. Pricier than Danskos, though. I've added a few finds that might be worth a try.

JAileen - I have those Dansko sandals in black! They actually hurt the tops of my feet. I try to wear those little half socks with them, but they show. I may just need to let my feet toughen up in no sock weather before I wear them.

I'm glad the Born booties worked out for you.

You’ve got very comfy brands represented here. I would stick to them, as they seem to know how to design a shoe.

I wear my Dansko clogs a lot, especially if I’m going to be standing. I also have Dansko sandals that are just as comfortable, but also summery. I’ve been thinking ahead too, and have a new Naots, and a pair of Fitflop slides.

BTW, the Born booties that I recently got are amazingly comfortable. I’ve worn them nearly every day since I got them.

My lovely friends: I am once again in the position of needing to make sure I have enough shoes to suit my back and hip injury. It's been a year! Earlier this year, I was getting it towards healed, but then I discovered that some rest around the time I was sick with a cold was also helpful. But then I let it go on too long, and I never got fully back into my strength training routine. This means I've backslid a bit! I know what I need to do to get back to where I was, but I've definitely put my recovery even further back.

Anyway, I'm faced with evaluating my shoes with this in mind for the coming months. I have kept some flat shoes that I can just keep and wear at the office, but aren't as suitable for walking on pavement, as I do every day. A few others, like sneakers, okay with a Superfeet insert.

I've bought four pairs of shoes so far, but I think I may return one. It's tough to evaluate them for pain alleviation because I really need to walk outside with them to be sure... which I can't do if I want to be able to return them. I tried stomping around on the harder floors in my building's basement, but it's not the same as the pavement.

1. Dansko clogs - these are my new spring commuting shoe! The rocking motion of the sole goes a long way towards alleviating the pain in my hip. They're cute enough that I may keep them on some days, and am doing so today, in fact (see pic). They help with standing on the subway, too.

2. Born backless clogs - I suspect these won't alleviate the pain quite as well as the Danskos, but they're cute. My only other red shoes are flats that I may pass on now that flats are a bad idea for me.

3. Born perforated sneakers - I bought these to wear with skirts and dresses! Very cute. They're okay to wear outside if I add my slimmer insert.

4. Naturalizer tan sandals - From my testing in the basement, these seem like they may not alleviate pain so well. The sole is shock absorbing, but maybe not high/thick enough. Since sandals can't really have inserts, I need to either return these, or keep them as inside shoes. Since I sprung for the Danskos this month, I may return - even though these were a bargain at TJ Maxx.

I think I am set for spring, as I can wear the Danskos and change to other shoes if I want to at the office. I'm including Finds for my two best summer shoes from last year: Vionics and Naots. For summer, it's better if my sandals can be both cute and functional for outside - I can always commute in the Vionics if I want to switch to something flat.

I am looking at some options (many by Dansko and Born, also Fitflop), but can anyone recommend something with a wedge or block heel that looks cute for work, and is likely to be supportive but also shock absorbing (involving cork or rubber, I guess)? Other Naots would be best for me but I don't always love the look of the styles other than the ones I have. My Birks are too flat to do the job - a wedge seems best. (I am proceeding of course as if my hip will still be an issue; even if it feels better, I'll still be wary of aggravating it further.)

NB: I also want white mules, but they'd be inside shoes... so probably not the best idea when I need to be investing in shoes to wear outside.
