Thanks all! I do have full length pants too Ana, normally that's what I wear, but was replacing some I had passed on. Any more pants I buy will definitely be full length!
Thanks for the link The Cat! I normally don't check that's site and it's a rabbit hole.
The 3rd and 4th pair are possibilties Gryffin, if my regular tall boots don't work, Gryffin- thanks!
I'd definitely would wear socks with them, though my warmer socks are shorter. I think the only tall socks I have are thin trouser socks. Maybe the problem is I don't really like my shoes/feet being the center of attention like that. I like my feet to be a continous line with my legs.

I don't mind the look of exposed skin between the top of booties and pants, or a taller boot with wide cropped pants/jeans, but I get what you're saying about cold ankles. Do you maybe need just a pair or two of regular length pants or jeans that you wear for the winter months?

You have a number of ways you can go. Sock booties come extremely refined. I have the EF Purl and wear them with dresses, skirts, pants etc. Bu their are all manners depending on what feel you want. I collected random styles for ideas. One of my favorite is heeled combat boots which are very fun with skirts and dresses. Also the EF splash is my go to high shaft bootie and is very comfy. I wear high shaft booties with skirts as well as cropped pants all the time. I do vary the weight and heft of the boot with the fabric and width of the crop whether more refined or heavy duty. The blondo, merrell, ariat, EF and frye are all one's I own. The 3-8 were just some ideas for you. Love this look!!

Well LaPed said it so I will too : cropped pants work so well in winter and allow you to show off your footwear too . Pants with that little slit at the hem are not in my closet - skews a little conservative for my taste and the boot issue is more complicated too .

Have you thought about cropped bootcuts? There are some cropped bootcut ponte pants out there that might be more accommodating of different boots (both the height and width of the shaft). I've realized that slim ankle pants don't have much of a place in my wardrobe because I'm almost always in boots Oct - April and I don't really want to deal with bunching *or* ankle gaps, or the little side vents not sitting properly, and then once it's warm enough for lower-vamp shoes and sandals, I'm in shorts or skirts, or loose, breezy pants. When I do wear pants with a shorter inseam and need to "close the gap" I use socks like Jessikams describes. I'm so intolerant of cold ankles. :D

I notice that “younger people” these days seem to feel fine about using a sock in the same color as the shoe in order to extend the height. Like a black Oxford is fine if you want to expose the ankle; if you want more of a boot feel, just add a black sock.

Yep- why are pants so hard? That's why I'm trying to figure it out 4 months early lol! It's the little slit in the work pants that makes them awkward- and I guess boot width + pant width. Maybe roll them?
The jeans are the ones from my last post, maybe 5- 6 inches above ankle? Of course I had sandals on so wasn't thinking ahead too well :/
If it was over 60 degrees all year this would be no problem!

So if I'm understanding, the question is what do we wear with ankle length pants/jeans in the winter? Right ? Well, ankle/mid calf height boots for sure - and it doesn't bother me if there is a bit of scrunching of the pant where it meets the boot. Also oxfords, loafers (I like to find patent leather for winter to make the shoes look more statement-y and interesting) . Back to the boots - if they fit under the pant leg , great, but we all know the pants never stay that way when sitting down, getting up etc. But as long as they aren't dinky little shooties (sorry but I can't with them) , a regular shaft boot works perfectly fine. And yes, every darn pant needs it's own shoe - I agree :)

Wear tights or nude-for-you nylons under your crops to extend the season. I even use fleece lined or wool tights. I have not found a pair or ankle boots or anything with a bit higher shaft that does not end up rubbing painfully on my ankles or heels. I have collected five pair of full length pants that I can wear when it is cold. Some are too light weight ( not warm enough) for real winter. I hope to find more this fall. If you can wear jeans, that will help. Get a variety of colors, washes and styles. I hope to find warm velvet or velveteen long pants in a dark neutral.

Well my mules take the place of dressy flats. My narrow heels make transitional shoes super hard to fit- I think I tried on 100+ pairs before I found one I coud wear. Other trouble is I use 2 offices, and carry about 40 pounds of stuff between them. Shoes are just 1 more thing :/

I'm thinking though, that higher shaft very refined booties could work with midi skirts...hmm...

Nodding along with the higher shaft boots suggestion, but understand your reluctance to add this type of boot as they don’t necessarily look good with skirts. I would also suggest a combat style boot, but guessing you wouldn’t like that like a skirt either….so it leads me to a dressy flat. Something like the finds below. For really cold and/or bad weather days these shoes will require an outdoor boot, and you will need to change when you get to work, but they will make your pants year round

I wear pants 6 months of the year and skirts 6 months (and with tights except Jan and Feb), cause it's over 70 May-October here- and skirts are easy.

My shoes, except my loafers which are new, are in finds. But for taller boots I have black and burgundy dress boots, brown flat knee boots, and about mid shaft refined snow boots. I always choose boots I can wear with skirts and dresses, and generally mid shaft look awkward to me with them. The tall boots, besides with skirts/dresses- I pair with skinny ponte pants.
With my small house and lack of storage I really need all my things to be versatile.

Think I'll have to do an outfit lab, but that probably won't happen til at least Sept- unless it rains when I'm off work.

Sounds like you need a higher shaft bootie as Irina suggested. I added two to my wardrobe last year and it really opened up the possibility for cropped length pants. I also wear them with sandals, ballet flats, and loafers, as you say, which really makes them three or even four season pants.

Loafers in December! Girl, you are living my dream! LOL
OK, to your question - sock boots or higher shaft booties, so there is no skin between pants and shoes, I have several pairs.
High tops Converse work but it’s probably too casual for you.

Aka- why isn't it summer year round?

Sooo, I'm trying to get my cold weather shopping sorted, or at least firmly in progress early, cause it's So Darn Hard :/

I tried on the cropped jeans with my ankle booties, and they looked really awkward. Several inches of skin between boot and jeans- not what I'm going for. My tall boots are buried in my cedar chest, so didn't try them yet. They work best with sandals, but not much weather for that. Late Oct-November and April I'd wear pants + sandals. So so with loafers and mules- which probably can work through December in my climate. Store pics show similar with sneakers (too casual for my comfort), sky high pumps (also no) and sky high nude type sandals (nope).

Then I picked up some fairly slim cut work pants, ankle length, with a small slit on the side. Great with loafers and mules, and sandals of course. But odd with booties cause the slit...my sock booties maaaaybe, the other 2 no. Maybe they will fit under tall boots?

To be practical, I really need all my pants workable in the 30-70 degree range.

Wdyw (work/smart casual) with pants/jeans like this?

ETA was looking at Angie's outfits and she had a lot of boots ending right where pants end or pants scrunched over a bit. The work pants aren't long enough to scrunch over, they just kinda sit there.
