Helen11, I'm short waisted, but I have a great singing voice. I'm not sure that having a short waist has anything to do with singing.

Helen, I think there's a few things that can be meant by "long waist" I meant it in the sense of having a larger distance between bust and waist
eg as in here
http://youlookfab.com/2009/06/.....g-waisted/
which I suppose really means a "long ribcage". For me that means that frequently finding clothes where the waist lin hits on the ribcage instead of under it.

Then there's the sense you mean - in terms of distance between ribs and hips (in my case it is about 2 inches)

The downside of all this (apart from clothes not fitting) is very short stumpy legs!

Out of interest, I tried Beth Ann's suggestion of putting one hand on my lower ribs and one on my hip bone....there's no space between at all! I didn't realise I was *so* short-waisted. Maybe that's why I can't sing : P

Beth Ann - interesting re singers and your observations. My lower ribs have always stuck out and I sometimes think doing swimming training as a teenager may have added to it.

When I was in my early 20's I tried on my grandmother's wedding dress from the 40's - and it fitted everywhere - with the exception of being tighter in the lower ribs. My Mum's wedding dress from the 1970's had the same thing.

Thanks for all the wisdom, compliments and empathy! I am clearly not alone in this problem. I do want to reiterate the my rib cage is a physical sensation issue only. I was partly posting because I was intrigued that there was absolutely no difference in bodice length between sizes.

I don't think I'll be getting this despite all the encouragement - unless perhaps it is on deep discount. There's not only the length issue, but the price ($149). I'm not sure that is is work suitable, and is too fitted to be worn in my high summer, and so I wouldn't get the CPW down. Plus as Joy said, it might fade.

I'll look out for this style at a cheaper price point. I need to save my money for new shoes and workhorses like a black work jacket.

I have this problem with dresses. Sometimes it can be solved with a wider, stretchy belt that fills the gap between your waist and that of the dress. If it is pricey for you, let this one go and keep looking. Dark cotton dresses, especially summer ones, fade.

I love this dress on you! I associate the shirt dress with a young Grace Kelly in "Rear Window," or with Audrey Hepburn. This dress looks even better on you than the model, and doesn't seem aging in the least.

From teaching singing, I've learned that some folks with longer torsos have really long ribcages. There is huge variability, actually. I sometimes ask students to place one hand on their bottom rib and the other on their hipbone, because this will affect how their bodies look during inhalation (and I use my eyes to monitor their breath). Some women will have a gap of 5-6 inches, others have 2. Men are even more variable, and almost all long rib cages belong to bass baritones for some reason.

You do have to be comfortable in the dress, and it needs to drop over your ribs, so make sure you have enough room for this -- might be a reason to take the larger size.

Have you done the sit-down test, Anne? Make sure the buttons don't gape. If the frock passes that test, and you can neaten the belt - you have a winner.

A shirt dress moves a long waist upward, which balances out proportions.

The dress looks very nice on you but I understand what you say about the waist seam being uncomfortable on your ribcage. I have the same problem and that rules out many dresses for me.

It's been a while since I have seen anything exciting in Jacqui E! I love this for you Anne. It seems to really suit and flatter your figure. I think the smaller size looks right for you but the arm holes look a tad right. The top part of the larger size seems a little more "relaxed". I really like this Anne and I think if you are happy with the fit, it's definitely worth the investment. I think this style will have reasonable longevity.

I have that problem with dresses a lot (not quite long enough bodice). You can't tell in the photos, though, it looks like it's sitting perfectly at your waist. I think the smaller size looks a tad tight under the arms (could be the way you're standing), so my suggestion would be to take the bigger size to a tailor and see what they can do - they might be able to lower the waist a bit for you, depending on the seam allowance, and they could adjust the rest of the top to fit you perfectly.

You do look gorgeous in the dress!

Gahh, I always have the same problem, dresses are too short in their waists. I love the smaller size, looks to fit you well, no need for sizing up, and is a great dress, will get a lot of mileage out of it for casuals or dressy, too:-)

I don't see staid or aging! To me, it's a bit retro. I love the fuller skirt, it's very flattering on you , nipping in at your waist. I prefer the larger size, as it looks to have a little more ease over your bust and under your arms. But - if the seams are irritating it might not be worth it. Might they soften with washing?
My friend had a lovely top on today - also from Jacqui E. I'm thinking I should pop in there too!

Thanks Marley. I know you can't tell from the photo - it's really about the feeling of it, not the look. I think it would annoy me, though I might have to go back and check again!!

Any preference for the smaller or bigger size?

I'm a bit love/ hate about it anyway. It attracts me - and yet a part of me wonders if it is too staid and aging.

I have been liking this Jacqui E dress in the shop window and thought I'd try it on, though it would be very pricy for me.
Pics 1-2 are the smaller size
pics 3-4 te next size up

I was disappointed to see that the bodice length is the same in both sizes - ie not quite long enough, with the waist seam hugging my lowest ribs in an irritating fashion. *sigh*

BTW,I didnt even notice this dress was hi-low when trying it on!
