This is such a great hack! It's so impressive how you can envision these changes (dying, alterations) and carry them out. I've recently found a good alterations person and I've finally sorted things which have been annoying me (mostly v-necks that were too deep and visible pocket linings) and they have made a huge difference to my enjoyment of those items.

Thanks RobinF. I just cut off the collar very carefully and very close to the seam. Then removed the loose threads. Much easier than sewing

Thanks Dee.

Sal, my advice is to spend some time pinning it first and moving around to get the right position. See if you like it. Of course the snaps are easily taken off if you don’t like the result.

I have two blouses that it might work on, I will see if the tails are long enough. The two short sleeve ones - maybe the black one too.

Thanks everyone. I think I am a bit OCD when it comes to making wardrobe items “perfect” (for me). Never say die.

Bridgie, if I’m wearing boots I tie the laces off with a bit of slack. Not too close to the boots, then pull the laces to the zip side and tuck them into the shaft. If I’m wearing sneakers I tie the laces off with some slack, then pull them behind the tongue of the sneakers, then put them on. The act of putting on the sneakers secures the bow inside the top of the sneakers. I’ve attached photos of the sneakers I wore today. Sorry they are dirty - it was wet today! I think you can also buy sneaker laces that don’t need tying off, if that’s of interest. And both your reply and typing are excellent

What a clever hack for making a shirt more form fitting and giving it some fun visual interest. (I am also not a fan of tie in the front, dangling knots on shirts either, they always hang in an odd spot on me).

I really admire how you have a vision for an item then adjust it to make it work for you. Dying to change the color, cutting off collars, reigning in volume, you are a master as customizing your wardrobe. It's awesome!

Brooklyn on "Shirt convert"

In light of Sharan and Ket’s posts about the difficulties they were having with their tops (length and volume respectively), I am sharing this hack I came up with for shortening a shirt. It can also be used to reign in a voluminous shirt.

What I do is take the front shirt tails and wrap them around each other, then attach snap fasteners on each side to hold the tails in place. It creates a twist front shirt. You can still wear it undone and tucked in if you like. But not undone and untucked because the fasteners will show.

I like this look because it is neat. I am not a fan of tied shirts, or bows or tie belts. I even tuck in my shoelaces. I am quite the minimalist in this department

As I mentioned, it also shortens the top and reigns in volume. You can experiment with how much by pulling the shirt ties tighter or leaving them looser.

I think it works best with a shirt that has some body. Mine is a cotton linen mix. Might not work for silk. It does work for knit jersey. (I’ve done it.)

Sewing the snap fasteners is an easy hand sew but you might need to experiment with getting the position right. On my second attempt I decided to use 2 on each side for a neater look. It keeps the twist more firmly in place.

You will note also that I dyed my shirts and cut the collar off. I am a minimalist when it comes to collars too I looked at numerous YouTube videos on taking a collar off a shirt but in the end decided to just cut it off. That has worked absolutely fine.
