I think that Netflix recently suggested this series to me. Thanks for the tip - I'll have to add it on my playlist!

Love it and can't wait for the next season!

This was one of those shows where DH was like, ugh no really? Then after the first episode, he was like, Hmmm is there another? ;-)

(He was like that with the BBC version of Pride & Prejudice, too.)

More fans! It makes me so happy, for some reason.

Julie, I can see why that coat sold out. Cumberbatch looks great in it -- although I did laugh out loud when Watson says something along the lines of, Stop doing that -- with your cheekbones and turning up your collar so you look cool. Then Sherlock looks all self-conscious and says, I don't do that. (But of course that's exactly why he does that). Brilliant dialogue.

I bet there's an epidemic of flappy coats in England at the moment. I wish I looked so good with my collar turned up, but alas, I'm the short-necked type.

I like it when Sherlock is being a complete berk at the Christmas party, describing in great detail why it's obvious that Molly has the hots for whomever she's giving this particular Christmas present to, and then reads the label and it's for him. Then he uncharacteristically looks abashed and apologizes. See? He's becoming more human.

Me, me, me.

Love it; the style of Sherlock himself engineered a renewed love for tailoring, that coat with the popped collar is outstanding.

I also love the relationship between Sherlock and Molly, particularly, those rare moments he stops analysing the details for long enough to see the whole picture.

Another fan here! Both the actors and the settings make it for me! Benedict Cumberbatch is also in War Horse and I am ready and willing to watch any production he appears in. Elementary has turned out better than expected but still doesn't hold a candle to this one.

Count me SO Sherlock-ed too! :-p (Those who haven't done watching the series through, you'll get the joke a little later... when you get there, sorry!)

But like MaryK, I've found Elementary a fun filler between waiting for these epics. Again, it's the platonic relationship between the functional who is quite clueless and the barely normally functional and also quite clueless... in their own ways... Eh! I'll shut up now before I spoil it for you! Just... WATCH! (Purists beware: This Sherlock came to America.)

Cumberbatch fans, anyone watching Parade's End? I'm waiting till there's a good pile, but many of my friends are all over it already.

Also, while we're talking crime series, did anyone else see the pilot of the new retrospective Inspector Morse series, Endeavour? Seems promising...

Rachylou -- I was also delighted by the high-tech aspect of the show! The superimposed text could be gimmicky, but it doesn't feel it. Love the nicotine patches instead of a pipe. And I have a crush on Martin Freeman too. :-)

Bionda -- I read all the Sherlock Holmes mysteries too as a teenager, and was a big fan of the Jeremy Brett television version. I remember looking forward to Sunday nights, when I'd watch it with my mom and dad. But this new version is equally good, just different.

DeclawedJaguar -- re. Cumberbatch's voice -- isn't it though? So wonderfully deep and resonant.

I don't see Freeman's Watson as particularly gullible. He seems intelligent, in the ordinary sort of way, but emotionally damaged. But what's interesting is that he's the only person who seems not only impressed with Sherlock's abilities -- because clearly Lestrade and others are too -- but also seems to accept him for who he is as a person. I mean, it's clear that he's irritated by Sherlock's arrogance and hilariously insensitive comments, but he's able to overlook all that because of his genuine admiration for the man's genius. And Sherlock kind of blossoms under this appreciation. This is a guy who's so out of touch with his feelings that he thinks he doesn't have any, or at least can detach himself, and in a very short time he forms a real, deep bond with Watson. And in return, he gives Watson a sense of direction and purpose, and a fullness to his life that he was lacking. That's why it's such a compelling story. And it's not even a romantic one! I can't remember the last time I've felt so invested in an on-screen relationship, and then here comes a totally platonic one, and it's more touching than any love story I've seen.

Lyn, Diana, MaryK -- yay! Glad to know you're fans. Mary, I've never heard of Elementary. I must look it up.

ETA Una, we cross-posted. Glad you love it too! But wait, what? They have subtitles? That's hilarious. We don't get them here. I do see why non-English people have trouble, though -- but husband does a bit. I've got the advantage of having a very English mother.

I adore the New Sherlock! My mom hates it (Jeremy Brett is Definitive she says). My best friend says Martin is my crush. Martin was outstanding in The Office - and you can see between the shows how much range he has.

And ya, I agree re. Asberger's. Sherlock is my husband the way Sheldon from Big Bang Theory is my husband. It's all because of the Asberger's. Lol.

I think my mother also doesn't like the New Sherlock because it's hi-techy - not only present day, but shot with a very tech aesthetic. I, however, really like that.

What was really rather fascinating to me was to compare the Jeremy Brett version of the train track mystery with the New Sherlock take. I'm still not sure what to think.

I enjoyed it too. Love BC's voice! Freeman is very convincing as a well-meaning but gullible man who gets very frustrated with Sherlock's antics and yet forgives him every time. The Sherlock Holmes stories were among my childhood favorites, but I think this modern version is fun too.

Has anyone else watched the BBC Sherlock series? I just finished watching it (there are, sadly, only six episodes) and I am completely besotted. The whodunit part is fun, but the real reason I am in love with this show is the genuine friendship that develops between Sherlock Holmes and John Watson. Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman are fantastic. I had never seen Cumberbatch before, although I'd seen Freeman in the BBC version of The Office and was completely convinced by his performance as Tim Canterbury. I was in love with that show too, in part, I think, because I was a little in love with Tim. Freeman also does a stellar job in the title role of The Hobbit. I read that Cumberbatch gets to be both the Necromancer and the voice of Smaug the dragon for the next Hobbit film. He is also the villain in the upcoming Star Trek movie. Bring it on!

FWIW, I don't think Sherlock is a sociopath; it's more like he has Asperger's Syndrome.
