I've been curious about this process, too. I'm glad that Theresa could share her experience with us. I don't usually do my finger nails, but I do my toes most of the time (sandal weather much of the year). I can get a good three weeks or a month out of a pedi if I am careful and do touch ups, but I am having a harder and harder time doing my own. It's nice to know that if I need to go get it done there is a long lasting version.

thanks all! i talked to my regular manicurist (my wedding is in my hometown, so 8 hours away from where i usually get my nails done) and she was skeptical of me doing this and i agree (probably why i posted the question) a regular manicure will work just fine!! no need to shellac (such a scary word)

Ele I would tend to agree with you there - I would say I get a good 8 days before anything starts to go astray - I wouldn't have a perfect mani at 14 days that's for sure... But if your nails are slow to grow and you are gentle you should get to around 10 days I would imagine!

Mellllls, I haven't had this done but I know people who have. I wouldn't count on it lasting the full two weeks- I think the phrase "up to" is important, here I've heard it goes 8-10 days without chipping, on average.

Yep its pretty much exactly the same - just better! It does take a little longer due to the UV setting process, but not too much.

I think it would be perfect for a wedding/honeymoon - I remember my lovely mani being totally destroyed by the end of my 4 day honeymoon LOL

How long until you are married?

Theresa, that was great. It does sound the same as what my stylist was describing. And no chips for my wedding/honeymoon would be ideal.

So it looks the same as a regular manicure but is just longer lasting? All I"ve ever done to my nails is get a manicure, I dont like fake nails, really long nails, acrylics, gels, etc. So I just want a manicure but if it'll last longer that seems good. It's $5 more...but for my wedding that seems worth it!

I'm assuming a Shellac Manicure is the same internationally... if not, well disregard what I'm about to say LOL

I have had these done a few times.

The polish itself is just like regular polish - gets painted on the same, there's a base, colour and top coat.

But, the difference is that after each layer, it gets set under the UV light - the base coat is a shorter exposure, but the 2 x colours and the top are 90sec each (I think its 90!).

The thing I love - its very hard wearing! Normal SAHM life for me means chips within a day or two - with this stuff, I don't get chips unless I break a nail or something like that - which is also not as easy to do because it's quite tough.

But, as the nail grows (and mine grow quite fast), you are left with a noticeable gap between the skin and colour - and for me, when washing the girls hair and stuff like that, I would get hair stuck under the ridge between skin/colour, and the colour would start to peel up a bit. If you aren't as harsh on your hands as me, and your nails were really fast growing, I suspect you'd get much longer out of a polish.

On my toes, I love it because it stays perfect for so much longer.

My brothers GF is a beauty therapist and she does my nails whenever I choose to get them done, so if you have any q's I can certainly ask her for you!

Yep, that is the same stuff I was talking about. I think the actual polish is pretty safe-- it is low odor anyway. You do have to go back to the salon to have it removed with "wraps" that go over the tips of your fingers for ten minutes. Some women I know were worried about the potency of the remover, but it has limited skin contact because of the wraps, so is probably safer than soaking your hands in remover like you do with gel nails.

Is it the Minx nail manicure? I haven't tried it, but I'm thinking about it. One of my girlfriends has it on her toes right now - and it is like a foil and does not damage your nails - you can get it in all kinds of very cool patterns! Her first one lasted 6 weeks!

this is all i know:

...It's a polish that has zero dry time, stays on with no chipping/fading and continues to have that "glossy finish" for 2+ weeks!

the name shellac scares me.

Hmmm, is that that resin that sets up like an acrylic under a UV light? If so, they are supposed to be more nail friendly than acrylics or gel nails with the same look but the main caution being that the chemicals are pretty strong and you are exposing your hands to a strong UV light, which over time can help age them.
