I'm with Gaylene!

E: I second the Hafflingers declawedjaguar mentioned!

Also, you might want to look at Giesswein. I have just about wore out a pair, they are cozy warm boiled wool with an amazing removable arch support. (I found on super sale)
The "Feld Natural" style fit nicely with your woodsy style! so cute with the bird!

To be fair, she isn't a fashion blogger, so perhaps she just doesn't think about these things. But she is quite astute and "switched on" in other ways, so I was just a bit surprised by her reaction.

Sometimes the ignorance is overwhelming. Yes, sheepskin, haircalf, calf skin, lambskin, cowhide, pigskin, fur, etc. ALL refer to things in a rather literal manner. Additionally, I fail to see why/how leather with the fur still attached is significantly more cruel or disconcerting than leather with the fur removed.

I am all for each person buying and using what they feel most comfortable with, but I have to agree with Gaylene.

E, have you looked at Haflinger slippers? They are wool, not sheepskin or leather, and very cosy and supportive.

In my case, I'll wear leather shoes because I don't think that the alternatives are as good, environmentally speaking or quality speaking (I wouldn't wear, say, a leather jacket or skirt, and I prefer non-leather bags too, because in all of those cases I can find reasonable alternative). But with slippers I have more options, so if I can find one that's environmentally friendly and doesn't require the death of an animal, I'll choose that first. I'm also a vegetarian who doesn't eat factory eggs or dairy, but if I ever had to start eating meat again I would definitely choose hunted game over meat from our factory farm industry! Luckily my father's a hunter, so I'd have an easy source. I do wear silk without guilt, so apparently my conscience draws a line between vertebrates and invertebrates! And I just say that as my personal perspective, not because I think everyone in the world should do as I do. I only elaborated, because I'd made the comment about slippers already!

I find this amusing. It's surprising to me how disconnected people are from the sources of things they wear/eat/use. Whether the material is from a cute and cuddly animal or brought into existence through chemistry, something can't come from nothing.

And I agree with everything Gaylene wrote above.

Do you suppose your blogger will go into shock when she learns that her designer, calf-skin pumps came from--you got it--a calf with big brown eyes. And that her favorite leather bag probably came from--yup--the mama or papa.

I respect people who choose to adopt a lifestyle that doesn't depend on using mammals for food or clothing, but I don't have any problems with eating free-range, hormone-free beef that I buy from ranchers who I know and respect, nor for wearing my real leather shoes, nor for the real fur trim on my Canada Goose parka. My husband and I don't eat much meat because we prefer a largely fish, grain, and vegetable diet, but, given some of the factory fishing and commercial farming practices, I don't feel I can afford to be too smug about my choices. I know many people who hunt, trap, and raise animals on a commercial basis and find most of these people very conscious of how they treat the animals that are the source of their livelihood. I wish I could say the same about hundreds of other companies and individuals who seem to be content with willfully ignoring the impact that their activities have on other people, countries, or the planet.

I don't know how to say this without being overly blunt, but that blogger sounds like she needs to spend less time on her clothes and more time finding out about the world she inhabits.

Exactly, Sveta -- that's why I was surprised at the horrified reaction. I don't actually own any Uggs but presumably the label says something about it being leather, or words to that effect. So it's one thing to object to leather, but that wasn't what was going on here.

How is it different from any leather footwear? You need an animal hide for it too. Of course if you do not wear or use any leather at all for this reason it may be different...

This exactly why I'm not sure I want a pair of LL Bean slippers, even though I'm looking for a new pair of slippers and they get great reviews. I don't have problems wearing wool, but sheepskin makes me a bit hesitant. I've always assumed it was a pelt though, just because of the name! I was a bit surprised when I learned that shearling is also sheepskin, just from a specific age of sheep, since it sounds so much like shearing. But that was awhile ago!

You are correct....sheepskin is exactly what it claims to be.
There are synthetic alternatives which is what she may referring to.
The price will usually reflect this.

Rae's Uggs in a recent thread reminded me of a facebook conversation I read the other day. Well, really, it was something a blogger that I followed posted, plus the ensuing comment conversation.

Anyway, blogger in question posted an article about how she was horrified to learn that Ugg boots, despite their (apparently) cuddly image, are made from the actual skin of sheep. That is, the woolly bit is not sheep fur stuck to a backing, but hide with the wool still on it. She, and many of the people commenting, was really upset to learn that sheep had been killed to make her boots.

I didn't comment, but I was bemused by the whole thing. Whatever your views on using animal products, I have always assumed that sheepskin is exactly that -- the skin of an unfortunate sheep, turned into leather. Was I wrong? Is sheepskin normally a synthetic material with wool stuck to it?
