I agree with what Ele said. In general, I prefer the neckline to show my collarbones a little, but I think you can make it work with this type of dress. Alltering it might get painful, because the neckline is wide... and if you bring it down, it might be more exposing than you want.
San, you and Angie have long necks, so it's very flattering for both of you.

Another vote for the straight neckline! I like that look on sheaths, even though I rarely like it on other types of tops.

San, my dress is pretty much identical to the one Angie is wearing - except I got it months before NAS, so very doubtful it's the same dress. But the cut is identical. And I am now thinking this is where I need to get it hemmed too!

I also like the straight neckline.
http://i288.photobucket.com/al.....1103-1.jpg
Is this neckline what you are talking about?
It looks good with different toppers over it too.

Shiny, my instinct is to have only the length altered for now, and see how you feel about the neckline of the dress once you start wearing it regularly. As a fellow short-necked gal I definitely know where you're coming from, but I actually love the look of a classic bateau neck on a sheath. It's versatile and a great foil for accessories! I can already picture you rocking your new dress with a cool scarf and your long pearls.

Do you have a pic of you in a similar neckline?

I'm getting ready to go into the tailor next week, and I have a big stack of clothes that need tailoring. It's embarrassing that I have this tendency to buy items figuring I will have them tailored, then procrastinate for months on end and never get around to it! And yet, once I do get around to it, it will be really nice to have all these "new" items to wear. :-)

One of these items is a very nice black sheath dress, made of 3-season wool. I bought this in the spring at Nordie's in the petite department, during a time when I was on the hunt for THE perfect sheath. It is much better quality than the ATL ponte knit that nearly ruined my white purse when the dye ran! I'm afraid that one will probably have to be culled out. :-(

The dress fits me perfectly except it's a few inches too long. I've dragged my feet about getting it shortened because I was telling myself that a more modest hemline isn't such a bad thing, but then every time I'd go to wear it, I'd feel frumpy in it compared to the ATL sheath with the above-the-knee hemline. So I have concluded I really need to have the hem taken up. Once I do that, I imagine this is going to be a workhorse, classic piece for me that gets years and years of use, as I've really enjoyed the ATL sheath.

But, the neckline is high - straight across. I'm not sure this is the ideal neckline for me. On the one hand, I like how that neckline works under jackets. On the other hand, my neck is short. But adding the right necklace or a long scarf (like I do with the ATL sheath) can minimize the effects. And I do like something more modest, that covers up the aging skin on my chest, and is fully work appropriate too.

I'm debating about having the tailor change the neckline. What do you think? And can you post pics of sheaths with necklines you would recommend for me, so I can get a picture in my head (and take something to show the tailor)? A modest V-neck? A slight scoop neck? Or just leave it alone?
