Shearling hands-down. Warmer and they don’t get stinky. I hate the thought of them (being hide/fur) so I try to pay attention of where I buy them/where they are sourced.

I don't live in a place anywhere near as cold as LaPed, but I notice a lot of difference between fleece & shearling in terms of warmth. Recently I had to replace my shearling winter boots and wasn't able to get a similar replacement (supply chain issues? who knows), so the pair is Thinsulate + fleece worn with wool-alpaca blend socks. They're fine. Before I started wearing shearling boots, I would've say this combo was extremely good, but compared to shearling + the same socks? it really is just....fine.

OT .., but now I have to contemplate a pair of new winter boots that I was gonna return because they’re a little big (altho in my normal
Size nominally).

On topic - I don’t find fleece warm at all.

There is no comparison between the two. I have two pairs of shearling-lined winter boots that I wear without socks. My feet are toasty warm in Canadian winters.

Thanks for confirming my suspicions, LaPed! I have those Vans too... I got a customized pair this year. (Did you know you could do that? You can put together any insane combination you can dream up. I couldn't resist.)

I don't expect synthetic fleece linings to provide much warmth. Shearling works because it creates lots of little air pockets that trap your body heat, much like down does. And wool has the remarkable property of feeling warm even when wet, which is great in shoes because they tend to trap moisture, especially if made of water-resistant or waterproof materials. I find polyester fleece makes my feet feel kind of clammy compared to wool. I have a pair of fleece-lined "winter sneakers" (below) but I don't enjoy wearing them if it gets below, say, -5°C or so. They're also on the small side now, so I can't really layer properly in them anymore.

When it's really cold like it has been the past couple weeks (daytime temps from -10 to -20°C), I've been wearing a silk liner sock to move moisture away from the foot, plus a wool boot sock, inside a shearling-lined boot or a Thinsulate boot with an aftermarket shearling insole (both in Finds). IME multiple layers inside roomy boots is the only thing that works for the depths of winter. (Old timers will tell you to size up in boots so you can get that pocket of warm air around your foot.)

I never wear shearling shoes with socks. IMO i the whole reason to get shearling shoes is because they are so warm you don’t need socks

Okay, a follow up to my shearling shoe question!

I've been holding out to find a pair of shearling-lined pull-on boots, and haven't even been considering fleece, because I just assume it's not as warm as shearling. The difference between them in slippers is huge--but those you wear with bare feet. I'm starting to wonder, is there a big difference in shoes that you wear with socks? Anyone have experience with both that can offer advice?
