I made a conscious choice not to put my daughter on a diet or give her any flack about her weight (she went through a slightly chubby phase at 12 or so--who didn't?--and is now thin). There's also that weird thing where some people think it's not an insult if they say it about their own body too. </p> <p>I'm sorry that she thought this was an okay thing to say to you. My own mom can be quite dense as well...and I hate to admit, I've heard some pretty dreadful things come out of my own mouth to my oldest daughter who looks exactly like me. I think I've gotten much better, but it took a conscious effort.
