@Shiny, I love your art. That piece over the fireplace is amazing. Again, I am a sucker for powder room/bathroom art, and what a cool idea to have a page from an anatomy manual.
(Where in Boston are you? Our son is in Fort Point).

Yesterday I finally took some photos of art pieces in my home. I was waiting for the right light, sunny day, but then had a challenge from reflections. Here are my photos. Scale is difficult to tell since I wanted to get closer. I really love all these and enjoy that they are lovely, personal mementos and some original pieces. Most are years if not decades old.

1,2, 3 Etchings and print purchased at local art fair
4 Print purchased at Chicago Merchandise Mart winter art fair
5 Print, Mary Anderson, purchased in Michigan?
6, 7 Bathroom art, commercial prints
8 Purchased from a local gallery in northern Wisconsin
9 Chinese calligraphy by deceased local artist, and a small quilt by me
10 Flamingos by my younger daughter, photo of my girls in Dallas 15 years ago, just before the first wedding (when they were still “mine”)
11, 12 Commercial prints in my bedroom, 20 years old
13 Oil painting after a Currier and Ives print, wedding gift from a family friend 44 years ago (artist is the mom of my recently discovered half sister)
14 My husband and his horse, promo photo from when his high school put on the play Green Grow the Lilacs (so fab)
15 Three photos by my daughter when she was in photography school in Missoula
16, 17 Antique magazines framed, and other antique and keepsake items in my sewing room
18, 19 Some of my collected pottery. First photo, top left shelf, wood bowl turned by my husband; middle left shelf, by my brother, a potter
20, 21 Two quilts by me (of many! Trying to decide whether to hang a couple more in bedrooms or somewhere.)

Love this thread. Love art. Love ALL the art you've all shared!!

I've shared some photos of what adorns our walls currently in context of our renovation a few years back. I am not sure if it reflects my fashion style at all! More like aspirational, if my body would cooperate. Or maybe it does and I'm not seeing it. I do know we moved from a house that had a riot of colors to a home where we deliberately went more modern and restrained and minimal. I guess my fashion actually has followed that over the years too!

Pic 1: this picture doesn't do it justice, as it's got a 3D effect to it! It's made of tiny photo papers imprinted with designer labels that all make up the greater image, of a model turning the camera back on you. This is the first thing you see when you enter my house, and as you walk around, the colors shift imperceptibly so you think she's constantly following you around with the camera. Oddly reminds me a lot of an early tin-plate photo my parents had hanging in their house, with the eyeballs painted blue by my great grandmother. As you move closer and inspect, then you see the designer logos. It's kind of unnerving.

Pic 2: an oil painting done by a friend I've known since I was 13. She is now pretty successful, she sold this to me because she knew I would know what the symbolism all meant. It is a self portrait. This hangs in our dining room.

Pic 3: Abstracts that work well with our decor and I personally adore abstracts these in particular. The photos don't do it justice. I stare at these for hours. There is a story in there about overcoming depression, if you look hard enough. My husband isn't as crazy about these are as I am, but he's never understood abstracts.

Pic 4: our powder room. A bit of whimsy with our boy "Man in Bronze" and girl "Sylvie." Have other art in there too, above the toilet is a framed page out of hubby's dad's anatomy manual (FIL was a doctor).

Pic 5: Entry way. Office photography gifted from hubby's ex-boss, we actually replaced this awhile ago with a different piece that we found years ago by the side of the road, it's more MCM abstract with orange and red and black. The picture shown now hangs in our hallway instead.

We have more but also still have big blank white walls to fill!

I've finally gone around and taken a few photos of some favorites.

##1-2 The first is a painting by a Japanese artist--I can't quite make out his name and don't remember. It is our most expensive piece, bought 30 years to hang in our bedroom over the fireplace. It is calming and I love to look at it first thing. 30 years later it hangs over a different fireplace in a different house--with a handy bottle of catnip at it's side, not part of art.

#3 a small painting by DH's younger sister. We didn't know she had this talent until recently.

#4 A present from our son and DIL. They took an old photo of our young family and had an artist give it the proper treatment. I think the boys were 1 & 3.

#5 A painting from a different DH sister who majored in fine arts in college. She painted this from a photo of our two kittens taken on the kitchen table one morning.

#6 is a photo from the Monterrey Aquarium taken by our grandson in law and blown up. It is in my office propped onto a bookcase.

#7 painted by a friend who died a couple of years ago. She specialized in flowers. Love this. We have another of her paintings, but this is my favorite. Also propped on a bookcase, different room.

#8 is a painting by DH's niece. Recent.

#9 isn't exactly art. It's a ceramic piece I made when I was 10 or 11. A friend of my Mom's gave ceramic lessons and my Mom switched me to ceramics from ice skating. The reason I never became a member of the ice follies. Just kidding! I loved ice skating but I had rheumatic fever as a kid and my Mom was overly cautious. I turned out just fine.

Sat in my folks' cabinet for decades, but when we had to move them, I carefully packed it into a box and brought it home on the plane with me. It made it safely. Now in my glass cabinet.

I have other artworks collected over the years, but I think these are the most family-connected.

I live in an RV, so not a lot on display. I have quite a collection of giraffes: carved wooden giraffes, vintage ceramic giraffes, giraffe prints, even a reproduction of a carved wooden giraffe mask. Unfortunately, nowhere to display it all, so it is in storage for now.

1. I do have a print hanging in my main living area. It was at the local thrift shop, and I absolutely HAD to have it because Daddy was a firefighter and the job cost him lots of years of pain and surgeries before it took him from us when I was a teenager. When I saw it in the thrift shop, I froze in my tracks and almost cried; when the tall employee got it down off the shelf for me and I saw HOW it was signed (pic 2), I almost came completely undone. My daddy's name was Jimmy. It is signed and numbered, but I've never bothered to do any research on the artist because it doesn't matter to me if it's a serious artist or just some mass-produced print. I'm getting choked up just writing about it so I'm going to move on to the giraffes.

In pic 1, you can see the head and neck of one of my giraffes. It came from Cost Plus WORLD market, and has a card attached explaining how it was carved in one piece from some special kind of tree that one must have a permit to cut down. DH gave it to me one year for Christmas. Almost every single giraffe I have came from him: prints, carved, ceramic... every Christmas, i got a giraffe from him. When i finally move into an actual house or apartment, I'm going to have SO MANY giraffes on display :-)

3. is a a couple of the other giraffes I have on display. Lots of them are mass produced and I don't care. They symbolize my nuclear family (long story), and I love them all.

4. Some mass produced pop-art that makes me smile. I feel the need to add that my phone just tried to autocorrect pop-art into pop-tarts because it somehow seems relevant but I haven't had enough coffee to analyze that one yet :-D

This has been a fun thread, and I'm enjoying seeing everyone's art! It's been very therapeutic to someone who enjoyed going to museums before the coronapocalypse shut all that down, so thank you to everyone who just gave me my art fix!

Mary - I love powder room art and venetian plaster! And I probably would love your hub's homemade wine!

This is an awesome thread! Here is some of the art in my home in Maryland.

I am partial to photography.

1)The wall in our living room is all unremarkable photo-wise, but they’re meaningful personal photos, including photos of my mom(lower right) and dad (upper left) in Vegas in 1960 shortly after they married. We installed this grid in 2012, and I have thought about updating it at some point.

2-3) my older son is an accomplished photographer and did a lot of work on a biannual student-published art and fashion magazine in college. He did an underwater shoot that I loved. I have 3 of the photos, -and they need to be reframed. 2 are here.
4)this is my powder room which is so tiny that I am taking a picture of very large, framed photo I took in Rome, as it is reflected in the mirror which you can see from the hall. (You look at this gorgeous statue when you are seated on the throne!) I did this Venetian plaster myself and it was really hard work and one of my most satisfying home accomplishments!
5-6) these photos are by one of my best friends since age 12. He got very interested in abstract architectural photography. #5 is one of the Alcoabuildings in Pittsburgh where we grew up and 6 is the Bloomberg building in NYC.
7-8) street art I bought in Rio in the late ‘80’s when I was a grad student. Bargained in almost-fluent Portuguese!
9-10) these are just decorative. My good friend who is a designer used to get me art (it’s actually original) from the furniture store where he worked, when it went on sale. He describes the effect of the large piece in the hallway as being “like wallpaper”. Full credit to him for the photo grid in #1. His idea, 100%. As was the Venetian plaster project. He gets me in trouble! I am good at executing on his vision, though.

Some beautiful pieces! I especially love your icon, Synne. We have a few more mass-produced pieces that you guys, but still some personal touches, and I choose things that have meaning to us. One of my neighbours is an artist for an art production company, so I do believe that even those pieces are a reflection of someone's authentic vision! A small sampling:

1. Large canvas; abstract I guess? But reminded us of moonlight on water ... we are all about anything to do with being near water
2. Prints from Etsy; eucalyptus which reflects my Aussie DH, but navy which reflects me :)
3. Lots of photos of family trips; this one is my favourite ... toddler DD was scared of the waves so brave big brother kindergartener DS held her hand and took her to the "Izzy waves" (the littlest ones that hit the shore)
4. Large canvas: birds - my momma loved birds and they always remind me of her
5. Aborigine-dreaming inspired sunrise from an independent artist

Sorry for the reflections on the frames! Definitely think these reflect my style!?

How cool and wonderful to see the art that surrounds everyone!

Right now it’s fire season. I’d like to show you this one painting, the painting I’d save in a fire, but gosh darn it, it’s packaged up in case of fire, ready to be evacuated, lol. No, that really is funny in an exasperating way.

Anyways, I’m reading in bed: Here’s the painting on the wall next to it and a Oaxacan clay sculpture... and my Arctic Air cooler and Lilypup’s ears and a cobweb, lol.

... I am so lazy! I keep telling myself I will hang this picture lower, properly, and then don’t.

Fun thread! My mother was/is an artist and worked for a government art bank. I learned how to hang art and do installations as a youngster, since I was ‘extra help’ when she was working on a weekend or school holiday. In uni I occasionally modelled for artists’ groups and the college, as well as individual artists. Sometimes I traded my time for work from the artist’s portfolio, and sometimes I was gifted a piece as a bonus for a long session. Over time I gradually got my collection framed! I’ve also purchased some art, and received artas gifts.

I LOVE original craft, and have several pieces of beautiful pottery. Interestingly, most of my art was created by women!

#1 both pieces by Canadian artist Janet Wright. #1 gift of the artist, #2 a small male nude - my first purchase of art.
#2 collage by Canadian artist Toby Graser
#3 ‘The Wedding’ by Canadian artist Suzanne Hill
#4 ‘Old Timers’ - original print by Canadian artist Molly Lamb Bobak

#5 pen and ink - by Canadian artist Toby Graser
#6 Canadian artist Heather Scott
#7 Virgin and Child - School of Verona - late 16th century
#8 French 16th century
#9 + 10 Canadian artist Karol Kueper-Schweiger
#11 - Canadian artist - my bad, can’t remember name...
#12 - Canadian artist - my bad again...
#13 - this is actually a Christmas card that DS#2 liked a lot. I saved it for many years, then had it framed as a Christmas gift. It hangs in the hall across from his room and will go with him when he moves on - Utagawa Hiroshige 1797-1858
#14 photo of swimmer - Canadian artist Mimi Richard-Golding
#15 Canadian artist/potter N. Jenkins
#16 Canadian artist/potter ? Saunders

I did a gallery wall for my mother, when she moved to her new apartment, and it was stunning! I would love to create a gallery wall somewhere in my home at some future time.

Great idea, Synne, love seeing everyone’s art. I don’t think I had put much thought into how personal much of our art is!

1. Painted by my husband’s great grandmother.
2. Ran across this menu (and another one) from the Palmer House while going through some things at my parents’ house. Dad worked there briefly after college so I framed them for the kitchen.
3. My son gave me this for my birthday a while back. It is of our two pugs who are no longer with us (see photo 4). He commissioned a friend to do the print.
5. Pastel done by a friend. We have several of her pieces.
6. Is pretty awesome. A picture of a car my maternal grandpa and his brother actually built themselves. They owned a body shop. The best part of the story is how mom got it. A high school friend of hers (also a car guy) happened to be in an auto shop (probably 25 years ago) where he spotted it hanging on the wall. He was eventually able to get it from the shop and gave it to mom. How great is that story?
7. This old photo - 100 years?- was rolled up in my in-laws’ things. It is of a drill team my husband’s grandfather was in. The photo is 6 feet long, so flattening and framing it myself was quite a challenge.
It hangs in my husband’s office.

What a wonderful post, Synne! Many of the oil paintings I inherited from my mother. The portrait of my paternal grandmother was done by an artist friend from one of those old sepia-toned photographs. The sculpture, which is named Warrior, is my radiation mask post-makeover by another talented artist friend. The African carving is DH's while the bird print belonged to my paternal grandmother.

Love these posts!

1 is a sewing by my Granny, from the 1940's

2 a painting by my other granny, who died before I was born, but both this and 1 hang in my study and I love to think of them both

3 this is called Sleeping Sisters, and is the famous coastline in the county we live in Susses, south east UK. From our bedroom. I need to paint the wall another colour!

4 covers from Inspector Montanblano books, that I had framed

5 original art by a famous Sussex artist, John Taverner

6 we love this and have in our kitchen, another Sussex artist

7 a portrait of the three of us, from 13 years ago, in the style of Bloomsbury, another Sussex connection

We have a lot of art, and it’s an eclectic collection. Many pieces by artist friends, and some by me. Since we are traveling now, just a few pics I could find in a quick search.

1-2 - most recent acquisitions — two local artists I admire (1 is a painting, 2 is cut paper)
3 - The “gallery” wall in my home office in the background, works by friends and colleagues
4 - the storage/workout room with some pieces by an old Navy friend of my husband
5-6 - my own work, in 5 in the Airstream and in 6 outside in our covered deck

Since DD went to art school and is a painter, much of the artwork in my house was done by her at various stages of her childhood. It’s easier to photograph works that do not have glass. I had a hard time trying to get pictures due to the reflections. Here is a very small selection of the artwork in my home.

1. DD painted a closeup of the lace of her bra for a college project.
2. DD painted brushes, and paints, etc. and won a local art award in HS.
3. DD self portrait, which I liked but she did not.
4. DD painting from senior thesis show, a project about touch. These limbs come from photos of DH and myself, and DD used colors she attributes to joy and love.
5. DD painted a pair of paintings, she gave one to me and kept the other.
6. DD likes large canvases, and this love started in HS with this piece done in her Sophomore year, also with self portraiture.
7. DD pastel done at age 4....the only one in a glass frame.
8. DD figure drawing in oil, done as a HS senior.

Such a fun idea! We have more art than we have walls, but here's a sample:

1, 2. This is our newest piece, which we got about a year ago in New York City. Our lovely Janet was kind enough to take us to the Affordable Art Fair (where "affordable" = "less than $10,000" so we had to chuckle) and we found this amazing piece! You can't really tell from the photo, but it's quite large -- probably 3 x 4 feet or more, and we actually had them wrap it up and we schlepped back to the hotel in a cab and thence back to So Cal on the plane! Apparently I don't have a pic of it in situ but we have it in our front hall and really love it.

3. This is the gallery wall in our family room (3) , which as you can see was transported pretty much intact from the house I lived in before we were married (4).

5. These lovely ladies are in our living room.

6, 7. More gallery walls, this time in our bedroom. My former husband and I collected these lithographs by David Lance Goines back in the early 1980s. This is less than half of the collection! The paintings on the right in #7 belonged to my husband's parents.

8, 9. This is a painting that a legal client of my husband did in lieu of the legal fees. It depicts a local landmark. Hubby made the shoji screens, which are moveable and conceal the TV. Big fun!

10. You normally don't get to see this, but this is what I'm looking at when I take my outfit photos in my Woman Cave. Mixture of travel photos and family pieces and various odds and ends. The needlepoint under the peacocks was done by my late mother-in-law, whom I never got to meet, and the "bathing beauty" watercolor on the left was painted by my late grandmother in 1919, when she was sixteen year old! And the piece above that, a print with a bunch of shoes, is titled "Leopard is a Neutral!"

11. We got this little apple at a charity auction and it presides over the kitchen!

12. Antique screens and a scratch-off map of the world in the dining room.

13. Another charity auction purchase, a multi-media riff on The Big Wave.

14. The awesome train painting over the fireplace in the Man Cave was painted about 100 years ago by my husband's grandfather!

15. And of course you've seen the big cycling poster in the front hall, with its matchy matchy owner! :)

I love your pieces, especially the last one. Here are some of our pieces:

1. By a neighbor, of my dad and brother sailing on a mountain lake.
2. By the same neighbor, a gift to me when I was a child. He was Dutch.
3. By a friend of my mother. I’d always admired these California poppies.
4. Woodcut by a friend of my brother. This is of the Golden Gate Bridge. We have several of his prints. He did a series of Mt Tamalpais in the style Hokusai. Mt Tam was our local mountain.
5. By a resident of my mother’s retirement home. I call this hyper realism.

6. View of the high desert. I bought this at the thrift store.
7. Another thrift store find. I like to tell people about this one and see the look on their face.
8. We have a lot of bird prints.

Nice! I absolutely love the picture in #4. Looks representative of Canada, too.

Here are some scenes from my place My art collection is quite eclectic, so to speak:

1. Original art from Pauline Paquin, Canadian artist. Pastels. (l) . Limited edition print of Victoria Beach in MB (where we "summered" for many many years ) by Leo Mol, Canadian artist. Gifted to us when I gave birth to our daughter. ®
.
2. charcoal sketch done by Jill, our daughter; won a prize for it as part of a final thesis in art class.

3. my husband's hockey wall. Framed memorabilia of the Winnipeg Jets (NLH) from over the years.

4. vintage and modern basket collection mounted on a master bedroom wall

5. bookshelf in living room which holds some pieces of Inuit art (hard to see; I have a very small collection of 3 pieces right now but would like to grow it), and The Golfer (ceramic) by Winnipeg artist Jordan Van Sewell . The pink car (which weighs a ton) in pic 6 is also a Van Sewell, and I have one other piece not currently out. I used have these pieces in a glassed in art cabinet for safety and protection - but don't have a home for them at the moment . I work some holiday decor around them too - they are weirdly fun. There is a framed limited edition reprint from Leo Mol in the middle shelf - another piece that needs a better home.

I was lucky enough to have father who was a Canadian art collector and a mother obsessed with the Group of Seven. They instilled in me a lifelong love of art of all kinds .

I have noticed that the decór and artwork in the background of the home often resembles the style of the person posting WIWs. Have you noticed this? It is so fascinating and I love the coherence of taste and style!

I am by no means an interior design expert, but I love to play around with home decór and art.

Just for fun, here are some views from my own home. Anyone else want to share?

#1: a large woven carpet/tapestry, woven by my childrens great-grandmother. It is sun-faded and a bit wonky (?) after many years of use but I love the colours.

#2. Our little shrine. We bought the house with this strange stone wall behind the fire-place. It now houses a replica of a russian icon, painted by my very dear maternal grandmother.

#3. The first (amateur) artwork I ever bought myself. It is a motif from a mountain chain in our County. I have a weakness for winter scenes, and would love some Pieter Brughel prints one day!

Over to you
