Hey alaskagirl,

I'm a postgraduate journalism student at City University London writing a feature on the dangers of wearing Spanx and I would love to talk to you a little more about your experience. I see you suffered from painful cramps when wearing them, which sounds horrific.

Would it be possible to chat via email?

Many thanks,

What an important question! I hadn't really considered it, but - wow. I'm assuming you mean modern "Spanx"-like shapewear. I think as long as it's got "give" and is the right size for you and allows you to breathe, it's safe. I wouldn't wear it to bed or around the house, though! (I HAVE heard of women doing that! Yikes.) There IS compression involved, and you're probably constricting your circulation somewhat. Also, I would think common sense says NEVER wear shapewear if you're pregnant!

Have you ever seen medical compression hosiery? So long as you aren't wearing footless tights or other such garments that are so tight they cut badly and constrict lymph and blood flow (full length tights are different, but very very tight shorts or footless tights can hurt-- you are save if you can get your shapewear on without "tricks" like powder and rolling and contortionism).

Shapewear is perfectly safe unless you know you have a medical condition that contraindicates in.

The last time I wore Spanx I got the worst side cramps and had to strip them off in the restroom. Eeek. I don't know about long term medical effects, but I really can't wear anything that constricting for too long. If you are comfortable in them, it's probably fine!

I also wear Spanx tights in the winter (not the high-waisted version, just the one that comes to the natural waist), and I don't think there is anything wrong with it. I know some people prefer not to wear shapewear, but I can't imagine it is unhealthy to do so!

Thanks Suzanne! Oh I know about uncomfortable shapewear - I bought a few waist cinchers in the past and I never wore them again - mainly because I need to breathe! I followed the Spanx size chart and even found the shapewear quite comfortable!

Thanks again!

Hi, Katie! Although I'm not sure from a medical standpoint, I can't think that it can do any harm, as long as you can still breathe properly (make sure that it doesn't press too hard on your diaphragm). My mom has worn the South African version of Spanx for years (at least more than 15 years) and there is absolutely nothing wrong with her physically or health wise. I think shape wear gets a bad name because people confuse them with corsets which are, when worn too often or too tight, extremely detrimental to your organs. I don't think you have anything to worry about - just don't sleep in them!

Not sure if this is the right category, but here goes:
A friend of mine told me that wearing shapewear daily is unhealthy. Does anyone have any insight on this?

For background: I wear shapewear on an "almost" regular basis to smooth out the lumps on my not-so-perfect body. I wear primarily high-waisted hosiery (I swear by these during the colder weather: http://www.spanx.com/product/i.....age=family) because I have a proportionally larger waistline (by 2 sizes) compared to my hips. It usually does a wonderful job at smoothing me out.

Any feedback would be appreciated!
