I find it very interesting the number of times an item has been called out in your purge pile! Funny, that happens in my life with the BF - he'll see an item and want me to keep it even though I'm done with it. Hard to fight against your environment sometimes.

lisap - welcome fellow Pegger! You are going to LOVE this place and learn so much. I can't imagine where I'd be stylistically without Angie and YLF. This community ROCKS!

Ariadne - the CK kitten heels are still in my closet. They are the one pair of black pumps I'm keeping. The two pairs in the purge pile are Marc Fisher and Enzo Angiolini.

LynD - just no longer feeling a striped jacket so off it goes!

Thanks for your continued support all and I hope I'm not boring you to death with the details

I love the feeling of eliminating the extraneous and have been doing that both in my closet and elsewhere in the last 2 weeks.

It's hard to watch a dream die (the peep toe booties). You're being strong and wise. I wore my new pointy-toed ankle strap flats today and they killed that joint where bunions develop (can shoes actually give you bunions? If so, this shoe would do it!). I'm having to be a grown up and get rid of them, along with a few more pointy toed pairs in my closet. It's such a shame because I love the look, but I don't want to jeopardize my future foot health. Thanks for being a great example and inspiring me to do the right thing.

Hi Shannon: as a complete newbie to YLF (fellow Winnipegger) I am having huge fun and spending an embarrassing number of hours reading just about everything on it. I can't believe I didn't find this great site years ago, but maybe the timing is fortuitous. Getting into the spirit of things, and because it was rainy and ridiculously chilly here today, I started on a total closet purge. One thing that went in the Salvation Army bag were a gorgeous but complete impractical and uncomfortable pair of studded grey Franco Sarto peep-toe booties. I think I wore them three times. Crazy for our climate. And while I was flinging clothes onto the bed and into the give-away bag, I kept repeating to myself : who is in charge here, you Lisa, or your clothes? . Love a good purge, and looking forward to turning my sartorial life around with this site and its members. I envy your community and sense of true support and friendship. Look forward to keeping up with your posts too!

Great job, Shannon! Very smart decisions, if painful. I think you are being really wise about the booties. I know it is hard to say no, but peep toe booties with our winters just don't mix except for those who want a large wardrobe where many items can stand alone without doing double and triple duty. You'll find some amazing and more versatile booties later on and be so happy you waited.

Shannon, I'm just now catching up on your simplicity posts, and I applaud and admire you.

Despite the size of my wardrobe, I strive to keep our home as clear of clutter as possible, and fortunately, my husband is even more of a stickler for that than I am (he throws away things with absolutely no regard for sentiment). I spent earlier years of my life in a state that probably came closer to "localized, organized clutter," which in retrospect, is exactly how my mom was. There were rooms that were beautifully kept, with no piles or extraneous things in sight, but then there were spaces that were more like neat dumping grounds. My closet was like that for some time when I was younger, and I now keep on top of it much better!

I just posted in Ingunn's purgatory thread that I'm thinking another little round of purging is in the cards for me, as we're in midsummer and I have a very good idea of what will not get worn for the remainder of the season, plus I have some new NAS F/W items that will take the place of some old things I don't need anymore. Thank you for more inspiration!

Great step for achieving kind of that simplicity(great term) I am for, too:-)))(including first 2 posts, which I have only read this morning). BUT I was going to ask the same 2 questions, Deb's asked(particulary the bl&w bomber one)...but I already got my asnwers now:-)). But what about the bl&w striped one???

Thank you for posting your purging thoughts. I also have three denim jackets not counting white. Like you I'm not reaching as much for the cropped one except to wear with summer dresses. The one that I wear the least is the nicest, although I got it thrifting. I don't wear it as much because the denim is an odd color...faded with a dark undertone that makes it look dirty. I should probably get rid of it, but when the color works it really works beautifully.
Please keep these posts coming.

I missed posts 1 and 2, and just went back and read them. It all really resonates with me as I was just going through my closet - packing for vacation - and wondering why I have so many things that I hardly ever wear. Two things that really hit home when I met Angie at the Boston meet-up were that quality, not quantity, matters, and if the clothes don't fit right, it's not you, it's the clothes. I need to do what it sounds like you're doing, go through my closet and apply those two principles, and apply them to all shopping going forward.

Way to be strong and follow what you know is the right path, Shannon! It's tough not to be sidetracked by a lesser good when we're searching for the greater good. These posts are very inspirational, because I am often guilty of buying an item that is maybe 80% of what I really want, and then I don't wear it much due to the missing 20% (and a lot of times the missing 20% is a comfort or fit issue).

Thanks Shannon:). I love knowing the details behind the purge:). I have been guilty of buying multiples and only reaching for one. It does appear wiser to buy one good one and enjoy wearing that:). And I hear you on the bomber! But they are too short for me and make me look like the Michelin man (yours did not look like that btw) which is a shame cos I love how they look on others.

Susie, Mo and Amy - whoo hoo! Way to go ladies. Sounds like you've been pretty darned productive in your style journey and I'm so grateful to have the company and someone I can commiserate with on this simplicity journey of my own. Proud of ya :)

Deb - yes that is a denim jacket. Typically a denim jacket works well for my style and I suspect I will always have one in my closet. But I currently have three in my closet, not including my white one. I don't need that many. I have kept my new faded with leather sleeve jacket and a cropped distressed jacket. The one I'm purging is a very faded super cropped version that I never reach for anymore. And the distressed jacket is possibly going too.

And yes, I'm purging the black and cream bomber jacket. I don't care for the shorter length and how the back is so puffy. I was always trying to tug it down and have no desire to wear it.

Shannon bet this feels good! May I ask a couple of questions? Do I see a denim jacket in your purge pile! Specifically is the issue fit, comfort or no longer working with your style? I am interested purely because the denim jacket is something I have never been able to embrace for all three reasons;). Also do I see your bomber jacket in the second pic. That's something that I always thought looked really good on you ( but another item I can't seem to work), where does that fit within your purge criteria?

And thanks for the ongoing inspiration, I think I will take a look at my footwear today. I purged quite a bit recently but I know I still have shoes that I am not wearing ... black and white quilted flats....I'm looking at you! They are about 7 years old and I have worn them very infrequently...why is it so hard sometimes?!

Shannon this is an exciting journey, thanks for sharing.

Way to go! I cleared myself a space today to make a "boutique" like Lisa's, and have some of my clothes moved to it. I'll finish after the kids are in bed - I'm excited about this experiment!

Good move, although, yes, it can be hard to be a grown up sometimes.
I first bought peep toe booties (on my birthday) but if I weren't in FL right now, and maybe again in the future, I would have held out for closed toe for Tahoe for sure. Luck would have it that I found the closed toe ones a month later. Yay!
I also purged today, finally taking 2 swimsuits to the consignment store and a jacket I tried to save by dyeing to the thrift store. They'd been set aside for many weeks now, but out of the house is much better.

Good job, Shannon! And I think you made a wise decision on the booties. I was considering a pair with an open heel and decided to be "a grown up" and find a more practical pair.

I too purged more shoes today, 3 pairs actually. Along with a bunch of socks.

And I started my 'boutique'- a holding zone for those things that are ok but I don't love or am not wearing. I've never regretted any of my purges but for some reason it was easier to try this method during this round. For now it has 12 items in it and they are in a closet in a guest bedroom.

Piled on the bed in that room are items that I've already purged a couple of weeks ago including a bunch of clothes, about 8 pairs of shoes and several bags. Some of the things haven't been worn I think I will post some here and send some to Twice.
