I think one-in-one-out is a brilliant device for keeping a closet in ship shape working order. I have already begun it in a modified way. At this point, I don't take it too literally. In other words -- I might edit out two tops to make room for one pair of shoes. That's because I'm still working out what items I need more of than I imagined (to Caro's point) and which items, less (to Ingunn's point). It's a process and never-ending, probably -- because weather definitely plays a role (along with lifestyle changes, as those occur.) The booties that I could barely wear last year might easily become major workhorse items this year. But I love Caro's suggestion to track what exactly gets worn and when. I'm going to try to do this more seriously in the year ahead.

Congrats on joining up with Weight Watchers again, and best wishes as you move forward on this!

My apologies for not being able to get back to this thread yesterday.

I so appreciate all of your support in this experiment of mine and I like reading how you all handle excess and keeping a handle on both numbers and budgets. So much useful information here.

Deborah - I do feel good when I purge. It's so cleansing.

Jenava - I think we do share some similarities in our style and I often look at something you are wearing and think how it could work for me.

Shiny - thanks for the tip on the brown footwear. I have kept the booties bit will need to reevaluate the comfort level. The heels are a bit high for me these days.

Sounds like a good plan. The taking stock part is what a lot of us gloss over I think. We just see new things we like or want, and get them, then worry about the fallout later. For the first time ever, I started a list of replacement items last night. I wore my white bermudas and the rise was too low. Put them on a list, then the maxi skirt with too big a waist. I can, and will, wear these items through this season but they need to be upgraded before next. I like that having them on the list reminds me that although they will 'do', they don't belong in my closet anymore and they are on borrowed time.
I'm yet to do 1 in 1 out. I do keep my overall number around 150. Maybe it's the moving all the time . . . some years I need tanks and sandals, some years I need jackets and boots. Doesn't make sense for me to purge the perfectly fine tanks just because I'm back in snow for a year. I like having hard and fast numbers, but sometimes simply what you need is a better gauge than strict "15 pants" or whatever.
I also admire the will to wait to buy fall items. It's hard right now with the sale and your dominant season is cold weather. But if you're certain that these buys will be outgrown soon, it is smart to wait.

I wouldn't purge the chocolate brown booties. I noticed while surfing NAS that brown seems to be back, with a vengeance. For summer we're seeing cognac. NAS had richer, darker shades - burgundy and chocolate.

So hold on to those a little while longer, just a hunch...

Shannon, this all resonates so much with me! I feel like I went through a similarly hard look at my style a few years back and came out with some pretty strong feelings about color and style. In fact, one of my style qualifiers is "straight-forward", which was my way of expressing what I meant by "simple"/"minimalist". I've posted it before, but these are my style modifiers, which I feel like sort of describes my personality, maybe not-so-oddly:

feminist - functional, feminine, comfortable

luxurious - rich colors and fabrics, often tailored, exotic details

intelligent - bold and unusual color combinations, unexpected details and construction

serious - not whimsical or playful, not costumed

refined - referencing the traditional, carefully curated
soft - pleated, wrapped, draped, sheer, textured, matte, worn
straight-forward - details are apparent and intentional, and are in harmony with the overall look

I feel like you are a pretty close style to me, relative to others on the forum, and maybe a similar body type as well.

I'm cheering you on for WW! I've mentioned this before as well, but weight lifting/strength training has made a world of difference for me (diet is still the most important factor, though!).

Shannon, I'm so proud of you for transitioning into a more simplistic lifestyle. I can see that much of your decisions and goals focus a lot on being healthy, not just in a physical sense, but in an emotional sense as well. It's no secret that you inspire me to work through my own personal transitions as well.

I'm with you on "one in, one out." I'm following this rule as well, mainly with regards to clothing. I'm still working out my shoe and accessory situation. It's really good practice because I feel this keeps our wardrobe current and only full of stuff that we love and that works for us.

Congrats on Joining WW! It's going to be a lot of work but you can so it!

Shannon, this is really exciting! Do you feel good when you remove things from your wardrobe? I don't always do the one in one out thing, but I do purge very regularly. Sometimes it's an intentional sort and other times I might be sitting on the couch and the thought drops into my mind that it's time for something to go lol. Sad to say goodby to the quilted flats:). I have this same pair and I never wear them...maybe I need to move mine on too!

The Jessie boots are fab and I am encouraging you to try them. If they are comfy they could easily become a work horse for you.

And good luck with WW from a fellow Life Member, who also needs to go back ;). I have found it's the best way to loose weight and get healthy.

It is a great plan since your wardrobe is in good shape and you seem to really have down pat your antennae for picking clothes.

I got a huge chuckle in your "split personality" : Sweet Jenava, enabling Jenava. Oh how quickly we turn. Haha.

Shannon, the one in-one out rule is very helpful to me, too. I purged three pairs of shoes this week, so the new booties could have their place in my wardrobe. In addition, when looking at my stats for the last year, it's clear that i get a LOT more wear out of boots, flats and booties than of pumps and sandals. I don't get why I haven't realized earlier that I need to have a shoe wardrobe based on closed toe shoes mainly, and only one pair of dressy sandals, and one-two pairs of pumps is enough for me.

Yay for rejoining the weight watchers. You seem to be very focused right now, and I'm very happy for you. Good luck with that!

In follow up to my first post regarding my search and exploration of simplicity in my wardrobe http://youlookfab.com/welookfa.....post-1long, in addition to taking stock of what I have for fall/winter currently (which I will be doing over the next few days and will update on in due course) I have made the very conscious and deliberate choice to adopt the one-in-one-out rule immediately.

This will allow me to keep my current closet under control while I begin to sort things out. For example, I have ordered the white eyelet Converse Hi-Ness now that they are half price (thanks Jules!) and will be purging from my closet of the two last pair of black high heeled pumps that kill my feet (keeping the black CK kitten heels as my one pair of black heels) and the cream/black quilted Shellys London flats (they're starting to hurt my bunion) - removing 3/bringing in 1.

I'm also in serious consideration mode of the Anyi Lu Jessie Wedge bootie that I professed love for in this post http://youlookfab.com/welookfa.....dge-bootie. I have not been able to get these shoes out of my mind and sweet Jenava (or is that "enabling" Jenava - lol!) just messaged me that they are part of NAS and that she could help me purchase them. As part of my one-in-one-out rule, I would purge my chocolate brown heeled Naturalizer booties. I didn't wear them more than 3-4 times last fall/winter as dark brown doesn't really work with my wardrobe anymore. The Jessie booties would work much better with my style now. Still thinking on it...

I'm also going to be completely transparent here and let my Fabber friends know that as of 10 days ago, I rejoined Weight Watchers. I'm a Life Time Member that lost just a little over 70 pounds many years ago and have had 25 creep back on. No excuses. So part of getting my life back together is taking care of myself. I know it works for me. So no more purchasing clothing until what I have for fall/winter doesn't fit any more.

The EF waxed skinnies that I found on eBay new for a song arrived the other day and are absolutely gorgeous. They fit perfectly but are a wee big snugger than I would like. These will be great.

Ok...that's it for now ladies :)
