We are making very wonderful memories, yes. The most important part of the visit was the trip to Hangzhou, where my daughter was born. An important experience for her.

Great question, Preppy Pear!

These fashions were mainly worn by younger women -- late teens to mid-thirties, I'd guess. In my next thread you can see a few who look as if they are a bit older, in their forties, perhaps - and the styles they are wearing are more subdued and elegant. But that wasn't true across the board; I saw lots of middle aged women in wild combinations, too. It's just that they were not as recognizably intentional fashion looks to my untrained eye. The looks were not always to my personal taste and I couldn't tell if they were fashionable or just the hot mess they seemed to be.

And in China, just as in North America, there are plenty of middle aged women for whom fashion is just not a priority. So you will see a lot of frumpy looks, too. The young in Shanghai tend not to look frumpy; they either look fashionable or just over-the-top (and it's sometimes a fine line between the two!)

Thanks so much for sharing all these wonderful pictures - I feel like I got a trip to China without the time and expense - you're such a great photographer! Just wow.

One question I have about these pictures is age - are these bold styles really only for younger people in China? I wonder how fashion and age are viewed there, and how older women might dress. What's your impression?

Wow, amazing! How different iit is from 10years ago. When I was there about 12 years ago, some American tourists came chatting with me, as they could tell I wasn't one of the locals (even I was wearing local fashion clothing and I was born in this city!)

If I were there today, I'd probably still stick out as I wouldn't be stylish enough! Lol.....

A few samples of Shanghai street style.

It's harder to characterize Shanghai style because it's extremely varied. Similarities between Beijing and Shanghai: people wear lots of black; people wear lots of animal
print. Apart from that, there's not too much in common.

Footwear in Bejing tends towards mid-calf boots and platform wedges. In Shanghai you see a lot more ballet flats (which makes sense, considering the climate and the fact that it is a walking city) but also towering heels and booties, which aren't so popular in Beijing.

I saw lots of coloured pants and print pants. Lots of shorts with tights and heels. Lots of pattern mixing.

Sometimes I wasn't able to interpret what I was seeing. I am sure many women were carrying expensive designer bags, but since I don't know anything about bags I couldn't identify them or tell the real ones from the fake.

Sometimes I couldn't tell a thrown together look from an intentional one. The photos I took were all looks that I felt I could make some kind of sense of, if you know what I mean. Also a few window displays. Uniglo closed down briefly during the recent contretemps with the Japanese, but is operational again.

In photo #1, not sure if you can tell but the woman is wearing print pants as well as the Union Jack.
