I'm not crazy about the boots, they seem off to me. But the top half is a great mix! I wonder if maybe this works because each item has a different pattern/texture, which distracts the eye from subtle tonal differences. As others stated, all the pieces are cool and therefore mix easily. It's easier to notice tonal differences in monochromatic outfits with little variance in texture/pattern. Either way I think it's a fun look to try and agree that grey can be tough!

I see that the boots are grey but the other items don't look blue grey to me at all - they look like shades of blue. I like it too but agree it would be hard to carry off for most women.

There is a nice optical illusion here with the gray boots. My eye is picking up the blue tones from the rest of the outfit and transferring those tones to the boots. If the color scheme was different, pink for example, the boots would show a warm pink tone. I recognized this illusion because I have a long skirt from Chicos with a pattern of neutral gray dots that shows this same effect when paired with several different tops. It is super easy to match this skirt with outfits in several different colors palettes.

Agree that the outfit itself is adorable on her with the youth, legs, etc. But focusing on the colors, it sounds like most people see blue grey. I do too. Angie, what boot color would you suggest here? Black? Or a bookending brown? Or a different grey? Actually, should you be on the forum?!

I think it works - the boots are pretty dramatic which helps to pull it off and do have a blue undertone to my eye (and I know my screen is pretty accurate).

Tall slim blonde? All the colors look blue-ish and in cool tones on my monitor. I don't see a mix of grey. The textures can also help as the shadows created may create deeper shades of the color.

Quirky, blue tones, boho, overall unfussiness (see hair) all make this work to me. But I have to agree with Lisa -- very sadly -- that part of what makes it work is that she is a gorgeous, thin, young blonde with legs to the moon.

I also see a mix of tonal blues on my screen, but the boots are grey. I'm not that fond of the boot colour with the rest of the outfit, but it DOES "go".

Not to be crabby but I think on anyone else, this outfit would be a hot mess. Who else but a 20 year old 6 ft model has legs like that and can wear what seems to be a sweater and no pants ? Anyways, I know, the issue is colour. It all reads like differing shades of blue grey to me. Cool looking texture mix, but as an outfit? Um.....

Agreeing with others. On my screen, the boots look like a cool blue-based charcoal (veering towards black, so their depth provides contrast). The other items are also blue-toned greys (or even blues...one could reasonably argue about that) and the bag is pale blue-toned grey (with texture).

Undertones all similar -- hence it works.

My grey boots -- alas!! -- have a warmer undertone than most of my grey wardrobe items. So they are not the workhorses I might hope.

I think the problem arises especially with grey accessories. In isolation when we buy them it is difficult to read their undertones. It's only in comparison to other stuff in the closet that their "true colours" are revealed.

I guess it's both the virtue and the problem with grey...it can skew in several directions. This quality makes it both versatile, and difficult to match.

Imagine a lilac grey, like this:

https://res.cloudinary.com/wec.....ek-spring-...

Now imagine a grey with a tiny hint of brown/yellow/orange/pink in it. I have certainly been frustrated by clashing greys myself. When you look at each item on its own, it reads grey, but when you put them together the clash between warm and cool toned greys can really be a problem. I own multiple grey items that definitely clash horribly. I've found it easier to make warm-cool grey combinations work if one of the greys is dark and the other light.

The same clashing issue is true with blacks and whites. You think you have a completely clash-free wardrobe, because everything in it is black... but when you try putting two items together, you discover that one is warmer-toned than the other, and it looks terrible. Sometimes you can get away with putting a contrasting layer of something else between them, but often not. With whites too, whilst mixing whites and creams can work, if the whites are too similar, one white can end up looking a bit yellow compared to the more blue-white sparkling new item you are trying to wear it with.

I hope this helps.
