Well I happen to like the high waist and the longer length. I think you look fantastic in all the ways you have it styled here. Beautiful skirt and such a fun and different pattern.

Thank you all so much - you are all incredibly helpful with this!

First off, just wanted to point out that obviously I would not be wearing the skirt with a white tee (too much contrast) but I literally walked in the door from work, ripped open the package and tried it on - no time to waste! I realize it doesn't work with this.

Bj111 - yes, I really am this short waisted! And it is something I struggle with, especially since having gained some weight. I work quite hard at disguising it.

I do have a bright yellow blouse I can try with it but will have to be careful if I go into the "gold" category - not a good colour next to my face (makes me look ill).

The zipper is i in the back of the skirt and is completely sewn in (sorry, don't know my sewing terms) as is there is nothing of the zipper showing inside or outside the skirt other than teeth of it. I'm not sure if narrowing the waist band is an option or not but will certainly ask my seamstress. I do think about an inch can be taken off the hem without hurting the birdies.

So to summarize, what I'll be attempting for tailoring includes:

- narrowing of the waistband if possible, otherwise leave as is and either tuck on top or belt over
- slight hemming
- narrowing of the skirt from the hips down
- putting in a kick pleat in the back for comfort in walking

I'd better wear the heck out of this skirt after all of that!

Shannon, LOVELY skirt but definitely needs some help to work in your wardrobe!

First, If the waistband can be slightly narrowed, go for it. If not, you can either untuck your tops as many have said, or belt over it. I do precisely this for the precise same reason in the photo attached. I also love Denise's suggestion to go with a lower contrast top.

Second, you *can* hem a smidgen I think, without amputating the tails as Mary K pointed out, and it *will* still make a difference I suspect. Just an inch or another half --- so that the narrowing of the 'tail' is still evident. DEFINITELY no hemming across the wide part of those curves!

Finally, you have the shape JUST right in the second photo. You can just bring that to your seamstress! By the way, if slimming it entails removing and reattaching the zipper (if it's in the side seams somewhere rather than at the back), you could also take that opportunity to entirely remove the waistband! If you want, I'm sure your seamstress can add a bit of interfacing at the top of the waist to keep it neater without the band.

I have a feeling that, despite all this trouble (or maybe even because of it), this is going to be a favourite piece --- like your amazing BB shirt!

I think the waist is fine, I wouldn't mess with the high-waisted part. I would embrace the look by wearing it with a tucked yellow top or a color of equal value so you aren't cut in half. (Which would be my concern about the chocolate top)

I personally would prefer seeing it knee length. Easier to walk, easier to wear as a petite. But I hear the others opinions about the bird and know there is a lot of midi love at YLF.

Really, if you like the length, all you need to do is take it in as it is too wide. Once you have this tailored, it could be a much loved piece. It is unique and the color is on trend.

Just wanted to say thanks for this thread! Being outside the US myself, I really appreciate the feedback on Shabby Apple's international shipping. And I too have altered items to fit my shape after going to the trouble of ordering them internationally, when, if I lived in the same country, I'd just send them back...

I think the skirt has great potential! It just needs to be tapered a bit. Skirts are tricky and quite often need to be taken in a bit. I really like the cool and unusual print on the skirt! You will make some amazing outfits with it, I'm sure!

It looks like it will be a great little skirt once it is slimmed down. For styling, I like the length of your jean jacket with it much more than the longer red jacket. There seems to be lots of soft gold this season. I wonder if you could find a top in a shade slightly darker or lighter that blends with the skirt for more of a column of gold. It could be a layering tee or tank to wear under a jacket. Blush would also be pretty and low contrast.

that's a lot of skirt. perhaps a lower contrast top ot a bridging belt? the skirt emphasises a shortwaistedness that i have not noticed before. is it even real?

The print is divine, I can't wait to see it tailored. If it was mine, I would leave the length as is. I would hate to lose that detail. I even like how high waisted it is. You can always belt over it, to eliminate that concern. You could also wear a top closer to the yellow of the skirt to create a longer line, then add a jacket as you have done so.

I think you will love it much, much more after is tapered.

That fabric is so fabulous! If you wear it with with a top that is bloused and if you taper the skirt , I think it would be lovely. Your heart was attracted to the gorgeous pattern and style of the skirt and I know that you can make it work. The jackets you styled already showed you can alter the proportions so that it can work for you!

Diantus - yes, I've found a lovely lady who does an amazing job. She's the one who basically remade my blue lace dress (which is coming out to play next week) to fit like a custom made job. I totally trust her to take this on.

I didn't think about removing the waist band completely. I think I'd like to see if she can make it narrower first.

The shipping is a ridiculous cost and it took three weeks to get here and the sizing is a little weird.

Bottom line: I love the look of their clothes - a totally vintage vibe which I love. But if I have to pay half the cost of the item to ship it here, wait three weeks for it to arrive, and then spend another $$ to tailor to fit me, not worth it.

So will I order from them again: nope.

I wonder if it would look good without the waist band at all. I have a few skirts that are cut that way and they fit well and are really good for tucking.

I really like the print and it looks nice with the denim. If you keep the waistband, I would try untucked tops. Please don't hem. Just narrow to show those gorgeous curves.

As to shipping, we drove to Pembina last night to pick up parcels for this very reason. Both my partner and I wanted to change out the locks on our garage doors because our children leave the doors unlocked. We got number pad deadbolts with auto lock for less than half the cost here and free shipping to Pembina. It was about $50 to ship to Canada. No duty or taxes because they were under $100. Worth the trip.

P.S. Shannon, do you have a good seamstress for alterations? I had an amazing person for this but she closed her business and I haven't found anyone since that was even half as good.

I didn't even think of the poor birdies MaryK - thank you!

Claire - as MaryK pointed out, shortening it will cut off the bird's tails. Never good to dismember a critter!

I also found while cleaning my closet a bit when I got home from work, a pair of Naturalizer chocolate brown Mary Jane pumps with a 2 inch heel. I'm ashamed to say I completely forgot I had them! They would work with this skirt nicely I think. I'm a little iffy on chocolate next to my face - normally not good for me - but maybe a really rich chocolate.

Gorgeous fabric Shannon. I like Rae's idea of wearing it with a chocolate shirt. Do you have a brown obi belt you could wear over the waistband? That might take the high-waistedness down a notch. The denim jacket would be super with it. I like the way it looks tapered in pic 2. Would you consider shortening it a little?

I happen to love it with the jackets! I also like it narrowed in photo 2 -- you could add a kick pleat in the back for comfort in walking.

I don't think I'd shorten it because that would cut off the tails of the birdies on the bottom.

Brave is right Jjsloane! I looked at that pic #1 and cringed - but if you want helpful feedback and constructive advice, you gotta post the bad with the good! I also realize just popping on the white tee quick for the photos didn't help me any - my boobs look like two ginormous headlights and the white looks hideous with the skirt!
