<p>As you build your high summer capsule you might want to consider building it in grouping (clusters) of items so that the silhouettes and colors in the grouping all work together. Depending on your body type tops that work with cropped wider pants might not work as well with skinny pants. &nbsp;I have found using a formula of 1 topper + 2 bottoms + 3-4 tops works well.&nbsp;For dresses I might use a grouping of 2-3 dresses to 1 topper. Again the silhouette of the topper should work with all the dresses.&nbsp;</p>

<p>For me, it depends on how often I'm willing to do laundry, and how long the laundry takes to air dry (my summer tops are definitely air-dry fabrics in my book). I tend to go with more tops than bottoms, because people don't notice the bottoms like they do the tops. </p>
<p>I'm now thinking about my summer clothes, and it is sorely lacking in bottoms

<p><b>Nemosmom,</b> I'm in hot weather a lot these days. Salt Lake City is 36C to 40C daily in Summer. I wear what I shared in my comment, but my big challenge is A/C. It gets sooooo cold and I freeze - so I'm always wrapping up too.&nbsp;</p>
<p>If you are vigilant about laundry: you will need 10 outfits that you can wear over and over again.&nbsp;

<p><div><b>suntiger</b> - your numbers are helpful, too!&nbsp; Your climate sounds like last summer here...&nbsp; <br /></div><div><br /></div><div><b>Joy</b> - yes! I think I have enough to get through the first few weeks and then maybe re-asses. I hope we get some transitional weather this year!<br /></div><br /><b>Jenni</b> - I love your snakeskin pants! I find I get like that with any prints. I won't wear them for the longest time, then I wear them non-stop. Why do you think you don't wear your skirts? I have several collecting dust and can't figure out why I don't reach for them...

<p>It looks like you are set if some of your tops go with more than one bottom. You may want to add a summer dress and maybe a couple more tops. Remember that there may be some cooler days when you can pull from transitional clothes.

<p>Thought I would look at my lists for you as we are just finishing summer. I have 18 summer tops of which 6 are sleeveless. One actually has long sleeves but is a very thin mesh so I put it in the summer lists, it should possibly move to the winter list. I have 5 pair summer pants, donated a sixth but used a long thin pair from the winter lists instead for the few times I wanted navy. I also have 2 pair shorts.<br />
I have dresses and skirts but hardly wear them. The pants are either cropped, or summer weight fabric. After a slow start of getting used to them the black and white snakeskin pants have been the most worn pants just behind the silver linen shorts. I think I am weird how I do that. I owned them almost 2 months before I ventured to wear them but now I have worn them 12 times. What gives?

<p><div>Thank you, Angie!</div><div><br /></div><div>Jules - I do find the joggers to be cool enough. The camo ones are cooler than the olive tencel ones, IMO, even though the olive ones are more flowy/drapey and the linen feels stiffer. It's almost as if the weave is looser (?) in the camo ones so air flows much better.&nbsp; I relied on them heavily last summer when I couldn't bear being in jeans.<br /></div>

<p>Do you find the joggers cool enough? I hate shorts, am always looking for short pant styles with more coverage, and love the idea of summer joggers. I’ve had linen ones that had a gathered linen bottom and were cool, but others that had a knit cuff and weren’t as good because air didn’t circulate.

<p><div><b>Suz</b> - we have ac in the house, but we keep the house quite warm in the summer (UGH). I didn't wear the chinos at all last summer... might be a good indicator that they are too heavy.</div><div><br /></div><div><b>Carla</b> - I hope you will update me on what you come up with. Given our similar OTG lifestyles, I am happy to share this journey with you! ;)&nbsp; I won't be buying anything for the coming trip; I noticed as I was reaching for warm-weather pieces to pack that if it were much hotter, I wouldn't really have much to grab - not for a 5 day trip - and that got me thinking about high summer and how I will be spending much of it standing at the ball fields sweating while slathered in sunscreen. :P&nbsp; Oh, how I dislike summer... :(</div><div><br /></div><div><b>SarahD8</b> - those are great suggestions!
<p>The cotton chinos will definitely be too hot for the hottest days. Well, they would be for me. Keep in mind, I never had AC in the house, so it might be a bit different &nbsp;-- but a skirt is always way cooler. Or linen pants/ crops. Cotton shorts can even be too hot some days!&nbsp;</p>
<p>I find the J. Crew T might be too hot for hottest days, too. I ended up using mine for transitional PJ top! Depends on the year/ cut/ fabric, though -- mine was different, actually -- I had the "perfect" which was snugger fitting and ribbed.&nbsp;</p>
<p>I definitely agree some lighter colours would be great.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Chiming in with those saying more is more in this scenario. That said, based on what's in your closet already, it looks like you have a cohesive set of pieces to start from! Aside from tops, which are more fragile and more laundered in the summer, I'd look for lightweight pants in other colors that you like, shorts, and a couple of dresses. You idea further down of adding light colors is good, especially since they reflect heat in the sun.

<p>You have a great color scheme started there! Some possibilities that occur to me:<br />
- non-olive casual bottoms. Maybe that chambray blue that I see in the plaid button up? A pair of shorts and a breezy skirt, perhaps. That rust color of the skirt would also be great as a pair of linen shorts.<br />
-bring in that beautiful chestnut/rust color in footwear. A pair of gladiator or flat euro sandals? (Thinking something super practical but a bit more refined than the birks)<br />
-white (or cream, whatever your white is) woven tops — a button up (would be so cute tied at the waist with the skirt), a popover, a tank<br />
-definitely recommend pouncing n a dress sooner rather than later if you see one! They are just.so.practical in hot summer!</p>
<p>Fingers crossed that the Out of Africa/safari trend will mean retail serves you well as you build this capsule!

<p>I'd think at least 5 bottoms and 10-15 tops, plus a couple dresses. Where I am it's in the 90s with humidity for 4+ months-80s at night-so high summer dressing is my forte :)</p>
<p>Sandals are much cooler than closed shoes, skirts are much cooler than pants or even shorts, sleeveless much cooler than sleeves, and wovens cooler than knits. Hair up also helps a lot!

Maybe for the sake of planning, I need to exclude the dupe-ish items and think about adding lighter colors. Or at least, some other colors besides olive and rust :D. Clearly my previous shopping strategy has been "if it's green, buy it".<br /></div></p>

<p>Conservative shopper here to enable top purchases! I'd say 10 or so is a good number for summer, allowing a change and a bit per day, laundry once a week. I could get by with 3 bottoms but more is not unreasonable!

<p><b>PatP</b> and <b>Jules</b> - 2 tops per day sounds reasonable for sweaty hot days. I am covered (ha!) with layering toppers like jackets, cardigans... I think duplicating bottoms in order to have a tight formula could be smart.</p>
<div><br /></div><div><b>JAileen</b> - yep, it's an upcoming trip to Florida that got me thinking about this (again). Last year I wore hiking pants for travel and baseball season, but they really weren't cool enough.&nbsp; The only shorts I own are board shorts, so maybe I need to explore adding a pair.<br /></div><div><br /></div><div><b>Carla</b> - You nailed it: summer items have always been an afterthought. When I worked in an office and spent most of my time in A/C, my transitional items worked great - high summer stuff was for weekends and maybe travel, so roughly 20 days? Actually, not even that because it was freezing in SF in summer, and I lived in a puffer vest and hoodie on the weekends... Now, I am running kids to camps and ball practices, and going to the lake. Even when I am working from home, we keep the house on the warmer side in summer, so jersey, polyester, and spandex are not going to work!&nbsp; 3 tops per bottom sounds like a solid formula.&nbsp; I share your discovery of button down shirts being cooler than tees in summer. They can serve as toppers in some AC and transitional weather, so maybe that is a good piece to look at.<br /></div><div><br /></div><div><b>Gretchen</b> - I DO have one linen skirt; the other skirts are satin (ew, not great for summer). I think adding a dress would be smart; I don't have one now, but maybe after I get sorted on mixable pieces. I should be able to pull toppers from my transitional pile (cotton jackets; linen cardigan) - thanks for the reminder!</div><div><br /></div><div><b>Brooklyn</b> - Yes! Two tops in a day does sound reasonable.</div><div><br /></div><div><b>SarahD8</b> - I laughed out loud at "Breton tank day". Yes. You know me well! 10 is a great target minimum, and I love what you said, <i>"If I had exactly the right balance of things for different silhouettes,<br />
everything for a given silhouette went with everything else, and all the<br />
items were 8-10s I think it would be ok."</i> YES. The magical life goals wardrobe! :D&nbsp; I hear you on the orphans - I have lingering ones in my closet I just can't let go of or seem to find friends for. Sigh. That's part of the reason I want to put as much into planning as possible. I am not a good emotional shopper (see: orphans)! ;)</div><div><br /></div><div><b>Kathie</b> - yes, how my time is spent in summer needs to stay top of mind. Thank you for the reminder, as I still struggle here.</div><div><br /></div><div><b>smittie</b> - thank you! 8 is a good minimum to keep in mind!</div><div><br /></div><div><b>Joy</b> - Yes! I want <i>ENOUGH</i> and not too much. Thank you for reminding me about shoes! I had not considered a dress, but can see how they would be much cooler for summer.</div><div><br /></div><div><b>Suz</b> - your numbers make perfect sense.&nbsp; And, you are dead right - I am NOT wearing office clothes, and without summer-weight pieces it will be difficult to get dressed! I don't have shorts, or a dress, and I find gear-type things are too uncomfortable to me for weather here. Thank you for the finds; they are really helpful!</div><div><br /></div><div><b>Jenn</b> - I've had two true summers now, and they were HARD. I have graphic tees, but found them to be too heavy last year (it rained much of the summer, so high humidity, plus heat, and sweat was just. too. much) Your numbers give me great ideas, thank you!</div><div><br /></div><div><b>rachylou</b> - I remember those triple digit days in San Jose without AC - OMG it was hell! Granted, it was only a few weeks, but still! <br /></div><div><br /></div><div>Thanks, <b>TheCat</b> - those numbers are helpful!&nbsp; Looks like it maps out to 2 tops per bottom.</div><div><br /></div><div><b>Thank you SO MUCH, everyone</b>! I have a great formula to go on! I went through my closet for a quick minute last night and came up with the following potential pieces: <br /></div><div><br /></div><div>Bottoms:<br />- tencel jogger, <br /></div><div>- linen blend jogger, <br /></div><div>- linen skirt, <br /></div><div>- cotton chinos (these may be too thick for really hot days)</div><div><br /></div><div> Tops:</div><div>- 2 linen shirts, <br /></div><div>- 4 thin cotton tees (thin, but may still be too hot for summer);</div><div>- cotton boatneck tee (it's pima cotton, but I'm hoping it's breezy enough to work)</div><div><br /></div><div>Shoes:</div><div>- 2 birks</div><div>- 2 slip on sneakers (1 canvas, 1 microfiber that may be too much for summer)</div><div><br /></div><div>Hats:</div><div>- sun hat</div><div>- ball cap</div><div><br /></div><div>Bag:</div><div>- cognac crossbody</div><div>- olive tote<br /></div>
</p>
<p>
<div>I have white skinny jeans that are too clingy for summer, my only shorts are a pair of board shorts, other skirts are satin-y, and I have no summer dresses. I have an athletic sneaker that may be more breathable than the microfiber one, but with two sandals (plus a pair of low-heeled dressy ones) I think I can manage. <br /></div><div><br /></div><div>For potential wishlist, I am thinking maybe a matching woven top and cropped or culotte bottom that can be worn as a makeshift jumpsuit, and maybe a pair of wide leg linen pants or long shorts... <br /></div><div><br /></div><div>I'll riff on it and see what I can come up with. You all have given me fantastic advice! Thank you so much!<br /></div></p>

<p>Well, 12 weeks = 84 days AND just as many evenings/nights! For such a long period--probably with different activities / chores / occasions / places to go--I would need 7-8 bottoms (including 1 or more comfortable dresses) and 12-15 tops in various styles from simple and casual to more dressy.

<p>Hmm. Well, I’ve lived with basically two bottoms and two tops and two shoes for 2-3 weeks, but that was rough travel and camping. But at home, where all sorts of things are going on, I feel a need for all sorts of outfits. Then again, on days at home when it’s over 100, I don’t do anything but lie in the dark, lol...

<p>Suz mentioned the casual dress. She is so wise. For my casual retirement lifestyle, I have been collecting casual dresses for all seasons and find that they are go-to items every week. My favorite are 2-piece dresses as they can be mixed or matched with other pieces . A tee shirt dress is ideal. I was lucky enough to find an EF Brenton stripe 2-piece dress on sale. It is like wearing a tee shirt and skirt in the same fabric. Another favorite is a chambray dress. If it buttons all the way down, it could also be worn as a duster topper.

<p>I checked my numbers too. For hot summer, I have 3 dresses, 1 jumpsuit, 4 skirts, 1 pants, and 6 tops. I also have a handful of graphic tees for the most casual situations.If you count the dresses and jumpsuit as both top and bottom, that's <b>8 bottoms and (with the tees) 11 tops.&nbsp;</b>With the dresses in the mix, that obviously doesn't equate to 88 outfits, though, and not everything is mix and match, anyway.</p>
<p>I've actually been thinking about expanding on this, at least a little, though some of it may be one-in, one-out, and more might be one-in, one-out with winter stuff. The long summer ahead is feeling daunting. &nbsp;We already have three days over 80°F in the forecast next week.

<p>I just looked at my list. For hot summer I have 11 tops, 1 pair shorts, 4 skirts, and 6 dresses. So basically what I suggested to you up thread, except more tops (assuming dresses count as both bottom and top). To me it feels pretty thin. If I had exactly the right balance of things for different silhouettes, everything for a given silhouette went with everything else, and all the items were 8-10s I think it would be ok. But none of those conditions are true at the moment.

<p>I don't really know what the ideal number might be but I think you need more, for all the reasons others have said, chiefly, multiple daily changes, and laundry. </p>
<p>Right now, of course, I live in a more temperate place, so the situation is different. But until recently, my summers were like yours. And my lifestyle also casual, with no AC. So...I shorts, casual skirts and dresses, and loose pants in high summer, with woven sleeveless tops and/or linen tees. And the odd long sleeve woven shirt or cotton sweater or denim jacket for AC situations. When living in a climate like yours, working from home, I typically had 3-5 shorts; 1 or 2 linen pants; 2-4 casual skirts or summer casual dresses. I sometimes wore white jeans in the evenings or if going to movies, etc. (AC)&nbsp;</p>
<p>Tops are actually hard for me to find and I relied a lot on duplicates of a few linen tees for a while. I do think we tend to need more tops that bottoms -- 2 to 1 or 3 to 1 sounds about right.&nbsp;

<p>My rule of thumb is 2 (or more) tops for each bottom. I think of 10-12 weeks as possible high summer plus about 3-4 weeks of hot autumn where you want summer weight things in fall colors. I often start this in mid August when the stores are full of autumn things. At least bring out summer weight clothes in darker colors like black. The tops get the hardest wear and are washed most often.<br />
If it is a knit, it must be linen. I avoid cotton knits and all polyester for high summer, preferring woven linen, silk and nylon. I cannot wear sandals but look for fabric or perforated flat footwear. I love espadrilles and D’Orsay style flats, slip on sneakers and perforated leather ballet flats and loafers.<br />
This is a good thing to think about. How much is enough? You need a few summer weight toppers too. Do not forget dresses. I find I need a light topper for each sleeveless dress. My favorites area white linen jean style jacket, kimonos and linen long cardigans.
