Minaminu -- Thanks! I've learned from experience that I'm happier when my wardrobe is at least 90% practical, with a few just-for-fun things thrown in. And very practical clothing can have a high happiness factor if it helps you get out to do fun stuff!

Bijou and Christina -- It's funny, a couple years ago I was a jacket/blazer diehard, but in 2020 I'm definitely on Team Knits. I haven't gotten rid of any of my jackets or blazers, but I'm definitely not reaching for them much. I expect (or hope) they'll look fresh again next year.

Runcarla -- Huh, good question. I don't really have a conscious system for determining my palette, but it does shift. I've been less interested in bold, high-contrast outfits and have been drawn towards lower contrast looks in general, plus more warmth than in the past. The scarf with rust and dusty blue is perfect for tying together the warms and cools in my closet. Beachy/coastal/California brands like Faherty, Outerknown and Marine Layer have colour schemes that are up my alley, even though I haven't purchased anything from any of those brands (yet). And Not Perfect Linen is a big source of inspo, for both colour and silhouette.

Jeans Update: The Madewell bootcuts are really nice but they're going back. Soft substantial fabric, colours true to the photos, but typical skin-tight thighs plus huge hips/waist. I could size up but the amount of alteration they'd need is beyond my minimal abilities, and it's basically impossible to schedule tailoring right now due to COVID. I might look for a pair of vintage bootcuts in a less clingy 100% cotton denim.

La Ped, it is interesting to see how you are updating your winter style. The new jeans and knits are so practical and will fit seamlessly into your wardrobe. There is nothing ugly about the sweater. I am going to look into consignment for some of my rarely worn items.

Thanks Suz! Yes, I'm sort of on style autopilot at this point. I tweak things -- mainly colour palette and the occasional silhouette change -- but mostly I chug along. Lots of direct replacements this year. Gear is a pretty significant expense for me, and there's so much crossover between gear and casual that it wouldn't make sense for me to treat it as something separate. Gear clothing tends to have a much higher rate of turnover than other gear. Canoe paddles and snowshoes last a lifetime; running shoes and rainshells not so much!

Suntiger and FI -- the best way to get started with foraging is to find a class near you. Experienced mushroom hunters often lead field trips and can tell you for certain what you're looking at and whether it's safe. The apps are great once you have a good knowledge of the poisonous varieties in your region and what their lookalikes are.

September's weather was weird -- a little bit of everything. We went from hot and dry, to a cold snap and an early frost, then had a heat wave with temps in the low 80s and extremely high humidity, and then *finally* got some actual rain at the very end of the month, but not enough to lift the fire ban that's been in place for the past couple weeks. DS and I went pumpkin picking at a local farm this morning; it was 2 or 3°C when we arrived and it was super beautiful with a light frost over everything. But, yeah, just cold from now on. :(

Those are great transitional WIWs, showing how the season changes even over a few weeks (or sometimes, hours!). You seem to be all set for fall/ winter -- I like the new (proposed) jeans -- hope they work! And I really like the idea of heritage knits for you. I hear argyle is trending...but of course I love a good Fair Isle.

You do extremely well at buying for the life you actually lead. I still don't count gear officially in my wardrobe (obviously, it counts as an expense in my budget). But I'm wondering if I need to adapt my thinking, since gear pieces are making an appearance in my everyday wear so much more often now that I am living in a suburb vs. an urban setting. If I count gear purchases, my totals immediately go way up this year. If I don't, I've purchased less than half my usual 35 or so pieces.

SarahD8 -- "New Horizons in Fair Isle" sounds like something you need to pitch to a knitting magazine, or perhaps a style blog. I was thinking about your lovely knitwear collection as I wrote this post. I may go on a thrifting quest for sweaters this fall. One of the perks of living in New England is all the vintage LL Bean (like the ones below) floating around.

nemosmom -- Yes, I think I was right around 1/3 secondhand last year as well. I definitely felt like I wasn't doing much secondhand shopping this year, but in the end I still managed to do a fair amount of secondhand buying (and selling) thanks to the internet.

Shevia -- I only manage to keep it somewhat small because I enjoy selling as much as buying. Between local consignment and online swap groups, I've gotten pretty good about rehoming the things that aren't working for me.

Joy -- Thank you! :)

FI -- Yes, I'm looking forward to pulling out my wool trousers in a couple weeks. I only meant to add the Find for the wide legs, since that's the silhouette I'm most excited about right now, but must have clicked the black watch ones as well. I hope you're able to find a pair you like, because I can definitely see you rocking tartan trousers.

TG -- I like #3 too. I don't remember the last time my hair was long enough to tuck into a scarf, but I'm enjoying that look.

Angie -- You are always welcome to join in for a foraging walk!

That skirt is adorable on you and I like the lining in the coat. Are the watchaid pants here because you’ve recently pulled them out for winter? I want something like them, have had them in my find for a couple years. Some day I’ll find them....
Have fun with the home schooling! If I had known what was to come with my kid, that’s the route I would have taken!

HERITAGE KNITS. YES. NOW AND FOREVER. I look forward to seeing what you do with this. An idea I've been playing with for this fall is "new horizons in fair isle," but things being what they are the odds seem low that this will ever be anything more than an intriguing phrase in my head.

By my count, I’ve added 31 pieces to my wardrobe since the start of 2020, 8 of which were purchased secondhand and 2 of which were pre-loved gifts (thanks nemosmom!).

These numbers are pretty much in keeping with previous years, and I would estimate that a roughly equal number of items have left my closet, though I haven’t been keeping close track. My secondhand ratio may have dropped a bit due to local thrift and consignment being unavailable all spring and into summer. These shops are mostly reopened here, but social distancing restrictions aren’t very conducive to browsing so I’ve dropped off donations but haven’t been in.

If there is a theme, it is gear, loungewear, and very casual. I bought one pair of metallic sandals and a short-sleeve jumpsuit to attend a wedding that ended up being postponed indefinitely. Luckily, the wedding would have taken place outdoors in June, so the pieces I did get some wears throughout the summer whenever I managed to go out in the world.

I don’t intend to add much more this year, as my lifestyle -- a bit of tutoring and babysitting, some online teaching, and homeschooling my 6yo (we figured this would be a good year to try it out and are having a blast so far!) -- doesn’t require anything new wardrobe-wise. If I have any sort of vision for fall and winter, it’s jeans and sweaters, which sounds… predictable! More specifically, I like the idea of heritage knits (think nordic and fair isle) paired with wider denim. I’m dreaming of indulging in a holiday sweater -- somewhat ironic now that I don’t have to partake of any silly “ugly sweater” days. I would love to find a pair of bootcuts, and I took advantage of a jeans promo at Madewell to try out the two pairs in Finds (click the one with no available image; the colour is sublime!). Love the front patch pockets. They should arrive later this week, fingers crossed they fit the way I want them too. My wide-legged cords from last year are back in rotation now that it’s chilly, and soon I’ll pull out my plaid wool trousers. I am keeping an eye out for long-sleeve tees/knit tops to wear underneath woolly cardigans and pullovers, and of course I’m always open to adding warm, waterproof footwear for our long slushy/icy winters.

Throwing in a few somewhat boring September WIWs. Featuring a new chino skirt, a new plaid linen scarf that I'm really loving for transitional fall weather, and a new-to-me waxed cotton anorak that I picked up in the spring and haven't had many chances to wear yet (drought!). There's a clear progression from mild early September to damp, grey late September. Plus, my 2020 numbers for anyone who's interested:

Gear (7):

1 fleece baselayer top

Lounge (5):

1 pair pj shorts
