Thank you, Runcarla! And how cool about the craft organization in your community!

LaPed, nice to see you! I think you're right, the vest outfit needs more yin. (Funny, because I had been thinking that the color palette of the vest was maybe off -- that the pastels were too "sweet." Which would mean *too much* yin. But I'm becoming persuaded that the correct diagnosis is the opposite.) A softer blouse with the jeans, or a skirt with the gingham shirt. The knit top is a good idea too, I'll try it -- stay tuned Cookie!

Yes! I think that type of top would be excellent under the sweater vest.

Okay, that box full of Shetland wool is a score, and those colours are perfect for you!

I *love* #6 with the fair isle/gingham pattern mix, but the octo tee plus flannel is a close runner up. Feels very Seattle! :)

I will say, after seeing that you felt a bit off in it, the shirt/vest combo is a somewhat more boyish than your usual and I'm wondering if a softer, more romantic blouse would balance out the "yang" of the lines here.

Or be like me and try the vest over a knit layering top. I have low sensory tolerance for wearing multiple front-closure pieces at a time (all those buttons!). And I also feel like a lot of woven shirts are just too much fabric to layer nicely underneath knits. My go-to under cardigans and sweater vests are these fine-ribbed tops from Madewell. I love how they just kind of "disappear" underneath toppers and I can forget I'm wearing them.

Thanks all for your comments and suggestions! I appreciate the love for the octopus tee. It's from this semi-local small business if anyone fancies the merchandise.

Lisa, these are great observations. You might be right about the preppiness of the sweater vest outfit. And yes to a cropped vest or cardi with the dress. I did try a duster cardi with it but I think it needs something with a nipped-in shape to rein in the volume...

MsMaven, thanks! That mid-low hip length is a sweet spot for tops on me, I think -- lengthens my ridiculously short torso.

Star these are great suggestions and you're giving me some good ideas about where to go next with these pieces that I'm finding more challenging to style.

Sal come to think of it I have a new-to-me pair of wide leg cropped corduroy pants, I wonder how those would work with the vest.

Cookie more good ideas about styling the vest and dress, thank you! I think I need to do an outfit lab -- definitely for the vest, maybe for both items.

cjh, yes the vest with a white embroidered top could work really well. I'll try it!

RobinF thank you for the vote of confidence!

ChristelJ and Cookie, oh I'm glad to know there's so much forum interest in visible mending! That will be motivation for me to follow through on these projects, I'll definitely post the results.

Angie great suggestions and yes! The season has turned here in Seattle. Yesterday morning I dressed for the predicted high of 70 F and spent all morning adding layers/warmer items. Then spent all afternoon removing them again! Today is my first Heattech day of the season....

JAileen yeah I don't know knitting well enough to correctly categorize this project but it looks very challenging indeed! I think you're right about the lack of whimsy in that vest outfit.

Thank you Bonnie!

Jaime, ha! Well sometimes it's nice when others like an outfit that I wasn't quite satisfied with, makes me feel better about having gone around wearing it all day.

Suz yes good suggestions re the vest! I do have to be a little bit careful to be realistic. I was noticing the other day that about 85% of outfits I had added to my autumn fashion pinterest board are skirts...whereas in reality, I will choose to wear a skirt about 15% of the time. (Many of the pinned outfits are also autumnal midi skirt + bare legs...which has a VERY limited window of weather appropriateness.) So I would love to make the vest work with pants too. I'll keep trying!

Well, I'm completely in love with #6 so I have no idea why you don't like it! Maybe it's lacking the feminine element for you? Could you get that through wearing with a skirt instead of jeans, or even wide leg pants?

You are looking terrific in all of these! And they seem like great transitional outfits for our current weather. I really like the Liberty dress as you wore it (moreso that way than in your alternative stylings.)

Love your footwear choices throughout!

I like #6 just fine. Some of your other outfits are more whimsical, and maybe you feel this outfit is missing that element. Last night we watched an episode of Sister Boniface where one character wore a Fair Isle vest with a patterned shirt and patterned pants.

The yarn kit looks fascinating. Usually Fair Isle is knit in the round. Knitting it flat must have been pretty frustrating - no wonder it was never finished. I’d love to see what you end up doing with the yarn.

ETA: It could also be intarsia or a mix of both. What a nightmare!

Looking good SarahD8! Impressive follow-through on your challenge.

My favourite aspects of these outfits are the: fun pattern mixing, addition of the leggings, and the hints of Fair Isle!

#6 is my best! Too bad you felt off. That said, you might prefer wearing that vest over a blouse or dress instead of a shirt. Unbutton it too. That might feel more you!

It has cooled down in Seattle. We need to wrap up a bit ;)

Also I like the idea of a skirt with the fair isle vest. And major envy for your yarn score, how fun! I'm interested in visible mending too, just got a book on it.

I enjoyed all your outfits and detailed analysis. Very nice. Thanks for the feedback by going for the cardigan layering. It is definitely on my repeat list when it gets cooler again.

The octopus tee, teal relaxed pullover, and striped pullover are favorites. As to the patterned vest, mixing with gingham doesn’t seem like a bad idea. Perhaps the conventional button shirt, vest and traditional jeans make it all a bit predictable and leans a bit too masculine for you? If I remember, you have a cream or white shirt that’s more “peasant” style? With embroidery, looser sleeves, pin tucks or some gather detail? That’s what I’m picturing, and that sort of more feminine piece might be an option.

-I love the octopus shirt!! I also adore the teal sweater (so graceful) and the Liberty tunic (anything and everything Liberty).

- I was also going to suggest a denim jacket with the tunic. With black leggings, I would also wear black shoes but maybe that’s just me. I like it with the sweater but I think the cozy sweater with the woven shoes looks sort of unbalanced or seasonally confused.

- Love the idea of the sweater vest with a corduroy skirt and stompy boots. Maybe over a turtleneck or long-sleeved T rather than a collared shirt. But maybe that’s my style rather than yours.

Looking good Sarah - and a fun challenge!!

I like 1 the best - but I like them all. 1 is just so casually and effortlessly cool. I like 7 too.

I think the fair isle vest would be better with a wide skirt or pants (but i don't think you love wide leg jeans). I think it needs some edge in there. I could see it with chunky cords or boots. More outdoorsy/moorsy.

I really like the flannel shirt, makes a great open topper. Love the tunic dress. I think it needs heavier shoes/boots when worn with bottoms, like combats, some juxtaposition. So I would not lean further into the boho vibe but toughen it up, eg, denim jacket instead of a cardigan, etc. I am sure it is totally fab on its own with feminine sandals. The vest is cool but I don't like the pattern mix with the shirt. I do like pattern mixing but these two are fighting each other for attention and are not cohesive for some reason. Also I would not wear it with a collared shirt, looks too Grandad for my personal taste. These are all my humble opinions that reflect my personal style prefs. You look fabulous in teal btw.

#1-I love a good graphic tee, and that octopus tee is awesome! It layers so well with the buttonup for a fun pattern mix look.

#2-The brown mules and teal top pair so well together for this look. I'm taking notes on this combination together.

#3-I feel like this dress needs a long almost duster length cardigan or a deliberate short item, like maybe a vest or cropped cardigan?

#6-Well I'm no help here because I really like the pattern mixing on this one. Compared to your other outfits though, this one looks more preppy, maybe that's why it felt off?

#7-I adore this combination of pinks and olive together. And as a big fan of colored sneakers, well you had me with pink sneakers! Those are so fun! I'd wear this outfit in a heartbeat.

#8-Fun layering here. That buttonup pairs very well with your graphic tees.

#9-This is a nice relaxing at home outfit, right down to slipper socks. Pretty color for the top here. Good luck with your knitting! I don't know anything about knitting, but admire those who can.

1: mid wash straight jeans, purple octopus tee, white/gray flannel buttonup, gold anchor/rose pendant necklace, blue canvas tennies

2: dark wash broken-in straight jeans, teal 3/4 sleeve cable pullover, gold beetle necklace, tan Huarache mules

3: Liberty tunic dress, black leggings, damascene bird pendant, tan Huarache mules. I bought this dress thinking it would be a fall item — layered with tights, sweater, boots — and I do plan to wear it that way but realized I could just wear it on its own with sleeves rolled in warmer weather. I wore it like that I think with a pair of canvas tennies and really liked that but struggled getting today’s outfit right. I tried layering what seemed like every cardigan in my closet over it and good grief nothing seemed quite right. Plus, with the leggings underneath it’s giving salwar kameez. Nothing wrong with that but not the look I’m going for, so I think I need to lean into some *contrast* to the boho nature of the piece. Next time I’ll try styling it something more like in photos 4-5. Suggestions welcome!

6: dark-wash broken-in straight jeans, navy/white gingham buttonup, fair isle sweater vest, gold anchor/rose pendant necklace, brown tassel loafers. This is one of those outfits that’s good on paper (Fair isle! Pattern mixing! Tassel loafers!) but I dunno, I just felt off in it. I’m struggling to style this vest in a way that feels really right. Again suggestions welcome! (I think I might know what the problem is…it will be interesting to see if anyone guesses what I’m thinking.)

7: olive chinos, blush/orange Breton stripe 3/4 sleeve, ceramic shell pendant, pink canvas tennies. I was going to put this outfit together with the navy/white version of this sweater and blue tennies, but discovered a hole in the elbow of the sweater so I switched gears. I feel vindicated in my “more and better” strategy and also my penchant for duplication!

8: mid-wash straight jeans, white/blue seahorse tee, white/gray flannel buttonup, ivory Aran cardi, silver caddisfly necklace, blue canvas tennies. I wanted to try cjh’s cardi-over-a-buttonup layering idea, and a day with an evening movie outing planned (necessitating layers that would accommodate widely varying temperatures) seemed like a perfect opportunity.

9: mid-wash cropped jeans, pink 3/4 sleeve ribbed pullover. I did not go out after getting dressed so you get my slipper socks as footwear. I *did* go out in a chaotic melange of loungewear to drop my teen off at a birthday party, and made an impromptu swing by an estate sale on the way back, at which I procured (among other things) a gently used knitting kit with many beautiful colors of Shetland wool (photos 10-11). I don’t knit but I plan to use this to seriously up my visible mending game. And I’m hoping to turn the fragment of sweater that has already been knitted into a throw pillow cover!

Thanks for looking and as always I’m grateful for your thoughts, observations, and suggestions!
