Sal, I could not agree more about the merino / tech knits for fall/ winter in a climate like ours. Or for early spring. I've purchased a few Icebreaker items over the past couple of years, initially as gear but then I loved them so much I started doing the athleisure thing during COVID because they simply worked so well for me....

Carla, I relate so much to your style. Your wardrobe is smaller and tighter than mine but our preferences are very similar (with small differences now due to climate) and like you, I tend to rely on classic favourites.

I didn't count wears this summer but I know what my MVPs were. Add a few graphic tees and some hoodies for casual walks on cooler nights and that is it.

I do find summer tops often need more frequent replacement. It's hard to say about bottoms, since I often make cut offs (as you do) so in a way, I'm extending the life of my pants.

I've also purchased 15 items (not counting true gear or PJs and undies) this year. I've spent far less on clothing than usual. This is okay. I don't need as much!

Going into fall, I have in fact identified a few needs -- which will become the subject of a forum post. Despite having probably too many shoes/ boots (truly!!), the ones I own are (yet again!!) not ideal for my current conditions/ lifestyle, so I need to upgrade.

(Just when I thought I'd made it with my bootie collection -- my best ever!! -- I moved to a place where I'm not on city pavement and don't really do much city walking!)

I also want -- eventually -- a really good lighter rain coat. Casual but not obvious gear.

And if I can find a lightweight packable rain resistant puffer in a fun colour, I'm going for it.

I divide my summer clothes into at least three groups and try very hard to wait before wearing anything from another group. My groups are Hot Spring/Early Summer, mid or High Summer, and Hot Fall/ Late Summer. In spring I concentrate on pastels and light neutrals and floral accessories , Midsummer is midrange colors and white or natural ( linen, straw) neutrals and tropical prints and seaside themed accessories. Hot Fall is autumn colored summer clothes and browns or olive neutrals with leaf motif accessories. This summer I was low on bottoms so had more cross over and black than usual. I also have done more experimenting with mixing fall colors and darks with pastels for fall. I also have small separate capsules for Easter, patriotic holidays, and Halloween, also for festivals which did not happen this year. My MVPs were olive swishy joggers, my EF crepe pants and sleeveless shells and EF denim pants. All the pants were usually worn rolled to a couple of inches above the ankle most of the day.
I have bought an EF refurbished cocoa dress in a linen blend ( EF Renew) and some EF espadrilles plus some used accessories from thrift or consignment. I also bought some dark blue Naturalizer booties for cold weather but they have not been worn yet. Looking ahead, I am going to try to not add new items. I am looking for a wildcard that I will love Not not want to take off, possibly more color for my winter wardrobe, a time heavy with black, navy and grey, but again I think I can find it used. I do think I need some new gloves and scarves or masks in colored prints that can pull colors like tomato and chocolate brown together.
You have a wonderful cohesive wardrobe. I hope someday to be there.

Great to see what worked in the Northern Hemisphere summer. Casual and comfortable seem to be the order of the day.

I don't track wears and I feel my wardrobe has been well used this winter with the exception of dressier pieces.

Here are the pieces that got I think the most wear....and that I would have struggled without. All very much essentials and all new this year except for the three footwear options. I enjoyed the new black cross body bag and this got a lot of wear. Simple knits worn with different bottoms and maybe a scarf were a common theme. I added two pairs of jeans and both have seen lots of use - more than the three older pairs that I own.

I do think given the quieter lives we are mostly leading merino/cashmere/technical knits that are slightly dressy/nicely shaped or that you can add a scarf too are good winter buys. My scarves have been really well utilised in 2020. Some have doubled as masks.

I also had a year or more without a long cardigan and I would not make that mistake again- definitely an essential for me to own one for working at home and casual weekends. Whilst the colour is not my absolute best, I did find it useful to integrate with other colours. The grey sweater has also been really well worn. Trying to minimise black around my face and in casual wear....

I am looking forward to getting into warmer weather clothes but spring is such a tease here.....

I have added 29 new pieces and edited out 19 so my wardrobe has grown. 29 includes gear, essential replacements, accessories etc I am up to 97 pieces in my core wardrobe with 30 sportswear and gear.

Fascinating number crunching ,you are so organised.
My most worn pieces this summer are a pair of wide leg jeans,knee length shorts , 3/4 length summer trousers and a pair of red sneakers.No surprises for me there but it’s good to have objective evidence of wears.

Despite it getting really hot here, summers for me usually involve spending a lot of time working in my lab, where long pants and covered shoes are required.
But this summer of covid, I couldn't go to work as much and got a lot more wear out of my dresses, shorts, cropped pants, and sandals. I felt much more in tune with the season.

@nemosmom - I would say the MVP ‘capsule’ developed organically. The only challenge I gave myself this summer was to dress up a bit for any forays ‘off the property’ and to match my mask to my outfit. I actually wore 21/ approx. 25 tops - some sweaters on cooler days early May, a brief cold spell in June, and this month (September). A smattering of tops (pale blue sweater, mesh floral, boho floral, navy and white button down) racked up 6-8 wears. I was actually surprised by the even split with the Boden t’s - purely by accident.

All my summer gear has been MVPs this year, and my flat sandals, especially the Birkies cause I hike in them every day. My tube skirts and RipSkirt are worn when I do errands, but I really haven't worn dresses much.

I'm good for fall, as long as my job stays the same, aside from needing cold weather walking shoes and another pair of joggers. Planning on a long "lifestyle considerations" post soon!

What a great summer capsule you have developed over the summer, Carla! Did it develop organically? Did you do any 30x30-type challenges for yourself?

I will hit 365 days of recording wears tomorrow (so excited)! So far this summer, I have been living in jeans and tees. Over the last 90 days, 4 tees have been on repeat: olive (20), rust (9), white (9), and a teal graphic tee (10). Straight leg jeans have been my go-to (26), wide-leg jeans next (11), and cotton olive cargo joggers (9). I would like to find a replacement olive and rust tee in a longer length for next year - these were too boxy.

I struggle with dressing in summer, but this was an unusual summer - kids' sporty things were canceled, fewer trips to the beach, etc. so it felt less sweaty than last year... :D

As for winter, I've done two edits so far this year with a focus on outerwear and sweaters. I am challenging myself to delay wearing the heavy knits as long as possible. I started wearing sweaters in October last year and several of them didn't last the season. I need to find ways to get creative with my transitional pieces...

I like that your have so clearly defined system for the summer with such great pieces! I wish I could steal your white cropped jeans and floral tee ;) - so perfect in every way!
Since I was back at work ( mid-June ) I added a few black&white pieces that go with black ( or navy ) pants and metallic shoes. The hardest working items were:
-white linen cardigan ( Marshalls );
-black&white polka dot skirt in midi length ( Old Navy );
-linen graphic white tee ( old J.Crew );
-white denim Paige jacket ( The Rack ).

I did add couple dressy things that I felt were missing from my wardrobe: ombre midi skirt ( navy to the cobalt blue - Express sale ) and metallic jacket ( NYC form Macys' final offers ). I wear both to my work - just to lift my mood ( my manager is ok with both ).
No plans for fall shopping as yet - going to try "no shop" mode for now.

Your MVPs are a gorgeous capsule, all by themselves!

I don't have any stats separated out for the summer (which is still far from over here...we're expecting two 100°+ days this week), but I've had the same things on repeat. I do know that the two dresses I added in February and July are already at 26 and 10 wears, respectively. The sandals I added in March are at 32 wears and the raw silk tee from that same month is at 25. And the cropped jeans from August have 17 wears. Stats aren't as clear on things added in previous years, but my Eileen Fisher linen shells have seen a ton of wear. Ditto for the matching faux-wrap skirt.

After crunching the numbers for May through September, 10 garments stand out as MVPs (Most Valuable Players.) Each hit double digit ‘wears’ over the course of 5 months.

RL white jean cut-offs - 37 wears!
Jean cut-offs (thrifted) - 27 wears
Lululemon OTF - 17 wears
MAC jeans - 14 wears
Black floral T - 15 wears
Boden striped T-shirts (3) multi stripe - 14 wears, navy/white and
black/white - 13 wears each
Red Nootka print T - 12 wears

A Red Cross body bag (Danier Leather), and a Tilley hat were the hardest working accessories (besides face masks ).

I’m definitely a shorts wearer during hot weather, but I’m also a fan of the coverage provided by long sleeves (and hats) when out of doors. I wasn’t much into dresses this summer, with the paisley dress (pic #2) seeing the most wears at 5 (once each month!)

So far this year I have bought 15 items (4 thrifted) and edited out 14. With 3 months left to the year, I have spent exactly 50% of my annual clothing budget!

Going into October I’m looking forward to wearing wider legged bottoms - both cropped and full length, and doing more with layering/toppers. I see no gaping wardrobe holes, but will need to do a little cold weather accessories shopping (gloves, mitts, and hats). I’m toying with developing a capsule of brown items, but need to think on it a little more.

Have you been able to identify any summer MVPs? Do you find summer garments have shorter lives? (More wear? More frequent washing?). Are you set for cooler weather?
