Oh wow! These navy dresses are after my own heart! I completely understand your need for different navy pieces for different seasons. I made this a goal soon after joining YLF (to stock up on classic but stylish essentials in my key neutrals for EACH SEASON) and it was one of the best decisions I've made. I have never been sorry about those purchases and I am still wearing a cotton knit Ralph Lauren dress for spring/ fall / cool summer and a David Meister sleeved navy dress for winter, both of which are more than 6 years old.

I love the blouse -- so pretty. And the vest/ gilet/ sleeveless coat is such a great statement piece.

I own a similar but possibly heavier wool vest. I have to admit I don't wear it a great deal, partly because the climate where I lived when I purchased it wasn't really suitable for many months per year and partly due to lifestyle conflicts-- I mean, where I live now, I'd be wearing it all the time in this season if I were actually going anywhere!!!
But I honestly don't care because it is my favourite wardrobe item and I have never, not even for 3 seconds, regretting spending on it. It's just so unusual/ special/ wonderful and it does indeed layer beautifully.

I have layered it over a silk shirt, a denim shirt, a tee shirt, a sweater. I have layered it over a leather jacket, a denim jacket, a puffer! These photos are examples of how I tried it. You can even see it with my sleeveless cotton Ralph Lauren dress (mentioned earlier). :)

Barbara, thanks! I have been very lucky this year. The wool navy dress and the black vest were HEWI, I had a serendipity moment when I found them!

Jenn, thanks! I like your method as well! I used to prepare a mini shopping list of 5 key new items at the beginning of each season, which was helpful against impulse buys! I soon realised that I can extend the use of items of different seasons by layering (great British weather!), hence an annual shopping list helps me to cover the current wardrobe holes and reduce the number of new items. I like a small wardrobe and would like to keep it under 100 items, even when we will move to France.

These all look like beautiful pieces, and I love your thoughtful approach. I tend not to do an annual shopping list, for a number of different reasons, but it looks like it's worked really well for you!

(ETA: I do have a rough list of pieces that are wearing out or that I want to add in a given season, but I also leave some room for when true love happens.)

Most of the items on my list are HEWI’s. They tend to stay on the list.

Kellygirl, thanks! It took me a while to get used to a shopping list, there are too many temptations!

Sal, thanks! I think the aim of a shopping list is to remember what is missing... A change of lifestyle or job can suddenly open a new wardrobe hole! This year I went slightly over-budget because of loungewear!

Suntiger, thanks! I am starting to think that a no-buy list would be a very clever idea!

MsMaven, thanks! So far, 2020 has been such a strange and difficult year and needed lots of adjustments. I hope you will be able to wear your new pieces soon!

Stylefan, thanks! Sometimes there is a serendipity moment when a great piece comes along, I get you!

Shevia, thanks! This year, I bought 5 preloved items and I am planning to increase the number of preloved purchases next year.

Liesbeth, thanks! Shopping list and budget are great tools to assess the wardrobe and develop it whilst keeping the emotional side on balance.

Nice additions! I have a prioritized shopping list but I do stray. It's more about thinking which items would have the biggest impact on my style so that I can balance that information with my emotional impulses when shopping. Because I do keep a strict budget.

Some of you might remember that I set myself a list of items to buy this year... I found the last 2 items from my annual shopping list!!!! And more! Still, I am pleased with almost all of those purchases and am comfortable to take a break from shopping until January.

Navy wool dress: 100% Merino wool, the fit and flare shape works well for my body shape and it is so basic that I can either add some trainers and go or jazz it up for an evening date at home (or outside, when the current Co-vid situation has finished!). Got mum's approval too! The heatwave is about to finish this week, I will be able to wear it in the autumn and winter.

Navy dress for spring: it may look like a duplication but this dress will become useful during the spring and summer time. The dress is part of a swap that I made with a friend, really pleased it worked out for both of us!

(preloved) Silk blouse : this will replace a solid black blouse that has become too big for me. The black blouse has been sold and the amount paid for this replacement. Nice circled economy for everybody.

(preloved) Wool sleeveless coat , I am not sure if it is grey or black as I bought it online and have high hopes for this one! I initially wanted to buy a windproof jacket to go under my light coat to extend its use during the cold weather. This is not exactly as planned but I think it should work better as I can layer it as planned and also use it alone. The reason for opting for a sleeveless coat is that a windproof jacket will not have the longevity of the sleeveless coat as

I am planning a lifestyle change in a couple of years' time and can't see myself using the windproof jacket once I will leave the UK. I am also not a fan of the material as it is not easy to recycle. I even considered a sleeveless sheepskin gilet but somehow it didn't feel right.
If someone has a similar coat and can share ideas of outfits, I'd be very grateful!

Including those pieces, my wardrobe is now at 79 items:

scarves 6

outwear 11

dresses 6

tops and knitwear 27

shoes 15

skirts 1

trousers 9

jumpsuits 4

I can see that the new pieces are quite dark, but I like the idea of having the basics covered, meaning that I will be able to be more experimental with the new purchases next year.

How about you ladies, do you use a shopping list for your wardrobe purchases?
