I'm sorry Maya, that sucks. It took me so long to find someone I trust, I'd be heartbroken if she moved. It sounds nutty but maybe if you see someone walking down the street with similar hair and a great cut you could stop and ask her where she goes.

I feel your pain, Maya. I moved to the UK in 2008, and only had one haircut in the following 14 months because I didn't trust anyone as much as the stylist I'd found back home. When I visited home in August 2009, I went back to visit that salon- while I didn't get the same stylist, they did an equally great job. Now that I'm back in the UK, I'm stuck looking for a new stylist. I went on a recommendation and got a cut on Saturday, and while everyone is telling me it looks good, I'm not sure I'm happy. It really did feel like she gave me the cut she had in her head, with the exception of adding a fringe/bangs where I didn't have one before. I wanted an edgier bob, with a lot more slanting- but it almost feels one length :(

I have no real advice, I just wanted to say I empathise. I don't know how to go about finding someone here that will do an equally good job as my salon in Australia- I don't know how long I can put up with not having nice hair! I'm going to try the one from Saturday once more- I'm willing to give her the benefit of the doubt and say she was just on an off day... we'll see.

Sorry for the essay- it's a subject that gets to me!

Maya as someone who only gets a haircut once, maybe twice a year I can't really say I empathise, but I do symapthise with your plight. Surely in all of NYC there must be someone that can do your hair well for a decent price? Maybe there are too many options, though, making it harder to decide. Eeek! I hope you stumble across someone great, and SOON!!!

Having said that its only been 4 months since my last haircut and I'm already starting to feel like getting another...ylf must be rubbing off on me!!!

Oh I absolutely understand the trauma! And if you think about it, as well as your appearance for the next month or two, you're trusting someone with scissors, razors, maybe chemicals on and around your head - it's hard to find someone you're comfortable with on that level :)

But do be adventurous, keep trying new stylists until you find one who understands your hair. At least it grows back if something goes wrong!

I've already asked my current hairdresser to let me know if she's ever going to change workplace or move away altogether.

I've moved recently and lost my hairdresser too but I'm very venturous regarding the hair.. I just went to the hairdresser nearest my house and took a risk and loved it (see my today's post). Go for it! Take a risk!

Maya, I'm so sorry about this! Totally sucky- what a horrible situation to be in. I know exactly what you mean about stylists, and even though I left my hometown in 2002, I still prefer my stylist there to almost anyone else I've tried! I've fallen into the bad habit of putting off haircuts until I go home, which means that sometimes I'm waiting 4-5 months for a trim! (Luckily, my hair grows slowly.)

Do you have any good photos of yourself when you liked your cut?

Maya, I'm sorry you're in this situation. It sucks. And it's lousy that she didn't let you know (it sounds like you were her client for quite some time). In my experience, I was never lucky when I was actively looking and searching for a new or better stylist. I found all the best ones kind of by accident (serendipity?).

Did you like that angled bob style you linked in your post?

Off topic. It's surreal. Right now I'm wearing a very similar cut (like in your link). And I've been stalking that Nordies model since September. One of these days I'll work up the courage to ask you guys about it.

Good luck and I hope your mom is wrong about the stylist.

It IS traumatic! I feel like I just emerged from a rocky breakup up with my non-existant boyfriend!

I keep saying things to myself like "I can't believe she wouldn't even call" or "She just left without telling me?" I'm surprised that last time I saw her, which was in early December, she wouldn't have told me she was leaving in a month. I'm sure she must have known at that point. At least then she could have given me a recommendation or at the absolute minimum, given me some time to research stylists on my own.

My mom keeps telling me, in this foreboding voice, that the woman I just made my appointment with "will only give you the haircut she presently has on her own head" and "she won't listen to what you want." My mom is generally pretty ridiculous when it comes to hair (she is never satisfied with it), so I'm trying to just dismiss it as her usual nuttiness, but she is sort of freaking me out now.

I know it's crazy to get *this* disturbed over a haircut/stylist but...we were just so happy together! I can't believe she left me...

Maya, I empathize! Finding a new stylist is so traumatic. It took me forever to find the one I have and even though she has an awful personality and is sometimes downright rude, she cuts my hair really well and I hate to go through the whole process of finding a new one so I keep going back!

I'm crossing my fingers that this other stylist will work out. Worse comes to worse, just remember that it will grow out!!

Steph, I have had my hair cut at B&B before! But your shortest layers must be shoulder length or longer in order to qualify.

B&B charges $91+ for just a regular, non-student haircut.

I have also had my hair cut by a student at Aveda, but I don't think they do razor cuts.

Maya--why don't you try the Bumble and Bumble salon in NYC? They do student haircuts (for a $10 "tip" when I went a few years ago), but they do not make you do anything you don't want. Their idea is that their students need to learn how to do hair in a way that makes the customer happy. All the "student" stylists are actually experienced stylists, but they are just going to Bumble and Bumble to get the training in their method. They also have their master stylists watching the proceedings, and they will fix it up when the student is done.

Also, you now do have one big advantage over the last time you were looking for a stylist. You have photos of the style of you in the style you like (as opposed to just magazine photos). Also, you have watched your stylist, so you can explain in more detail to a new stylist what she did. I wouldn't give up just yet!

I have spent a while researching reviews on nymag.com and found a place that sounded great. 19 five-star reviews! But when I got to a review from someone who said s/he flew from Dubai to NY just to get a haircut from this place, I knew it was going to be expensive, and it was. $150 minimum. I could faint.

I also tried searching Craigslist. A lot of high end stylists around the area do free student haircuts, but you need to be willing to do a dramatic haircut. At my length, all I could do is a pixie. Gross (on me! I love pixies on everyone else).

So I ended up making an appointment with another stylist in the same salon, in hopes that they all get similar training. My mom didn't like her, but I personally liked the cut she gave my mom. So I guess we'll see how it goes.

Khris, will you be getting that haircut you posted? The Nordies model one? I think that would be a GREAT bday present.

I'm about to bite the bullet and see a real stylist. I told hubby that's what I want for my birthday (and that I want to be able to go back every 8 weeks for a trim). I have a friend whose hair always looks good, and she has similar texture (straight like mine), so I am going to give her guy a whirl. She really likes him so I am hopeful. I also think it's important to give a new person more than one chance to get to know your hair and what you want.

The majority of my referrals come from someone who has stopped one of my clients and asked them" who does your hair." So if you should see someone with "the cut" you love ...ask them who their stylist is....people are usually quite flattered that someone else admires the look on them.

Keep your eyes peeled...good luck")

So sorry. I've had that same issue - except I had no idea that my girl was gone until I actually went to get a hair cut and the salon was just completely not there! My suggestion is to walk into a salon, look for a stylist that has hair you like (and has similar hair - not necessarily the style you want, but a similar texture) and ask them who cut their hair.

My hair stylist, who I am totally attached to, as many of you know, is gone! She quit around 3 weeks ago and moved to Puerto Rico. I'm in a major pickle now because I desperately need a cut in about 2 weeks (actually I need one now but I'm trying to space them out so I can spend less).

She is the first and only person who ever actually gave me what I asked for. Every time I told other stylists what I wanted, even with a picture in hand, I would always end up with their idea of what I should have: a sleek, sophisticated, allegedly no-fuss soccer mom bob. When I asked for layers and texture, I would get one layer that was about 1" shorter than the rest of my hair, and it would be flat and limp and utterly boring. After years of trying and failing to get what I wanted, I finally just gave up and grew my hair long because I thought it was just something wrong with my hair--that it couldn't hold the style I was after.

When I found my stylist, I still had long hair and she did a great job. She cut all these super short layers that gave it volume and shape, which is exactly what I needed with shorter hair. I thought maybe it was time to give short hair another chance, while I had a competent stylist. And I was right--it was perfect and it has been great all year.

To complicate matters, the last time I saw her, I tried out a new style this one, if you recall), and I didn't really like it. I want to go back to my old style. So whoever cuts my hair next won't even be able to see how she used to cut my hair and just trim/clean it up.

Sooo...what do I do now?! I have never found asking for recommendations to be very helpful. Hair is so personal. Different stylists might be better for thick hair, long hair, with scissors rather than razors, etc. Unless I find someone who has the exact cut I want with the same texture I have, a recommendation isn't very helpful to me. All those stylists who gave me soccer mom cuts came to me via recommendations. Since I have had such negative experiences with other stylists, I am leaning towards just growing my hair long again.
