I'm not sure if he does! And the thing is, we're so pressed for space where we live and that big ol 80s sweatshirt takes up half a drawer. I still keep it!

K.M that's so sweet. Does he know you have it?
Often we are apart for our work. I have a special stash of his old shirts in the way back of our closet. I wear these around the home and at night when he's away. One day I would like to have a boudoire session for him and of course I'd wear these as a surprise to him. I think it would make a great romantic gift.

Laura, that's funny! You mean things your partner can't see? Because of how they look or because of their emotional value?
I do keep an item that belonged to my husband for sentimental reasons. A long time ago we lived apart for study reasons and he gave me a big 80s sweatshirt to "hug" me from afar. I still have it and though I don't wear it anymore (my L.L. Bean fleece is warmer and comfier) I can't find the heart to part with it.

Any of you keep things from your partners or spouse?
I have a few things stashed away if not hiding from him.
A couple tees and white shirts I sometimes were to bed.

The timing of this! I was in traffic in DC this afternoon listening to a local NPR talk show and the guest was the author of a book called Worn Stories: Sartorial Memoirs
One of the guests who called in could barely tell her story she was so choked up about the meaning of her son's sweater from college.
One man talked about his wife making a quilt from all of his old t-shirts that he couldn't part with but would never wear again (great idea for the 10K runners and bike ride enthusiasts).

The author said that some people were able to get rid of sentimental items that they would never wear, like a fur coat with a mother's name embroidered in it, if they were able to tell the story and have the item photographed and documented. Then they could part with it.

I only heard about 30 minutes in the middle of show but the topic is spot on.

Just recently I was cleaning my closet and came across this exquisite vintage Japanese silk scarf my aunt gave me when I left home for college. Unfortunately, it has not aged well, and the material is now terribly discolored. I couldn't get myself to discard it, even though I would have, if it were any other item in my closet.

I have often thought of, instead of simply throwing away ( I never do this) or donating old clothes, no matter their condition, to repurpose them.
I see many cool ideas in ETSY, Pinterest etc. That would be a way to keep something special.
I once met a nice British lady that makes some really amazing lingerie from old tops, shirts and blouses. Might be fun one day.

Yes, I have a few older items I feel sentimental about. I have two dresses my mom made for herself as a young newlywed (married at 19) hanging in my closet. Too tiny for me to wear, but I will never part with them.

Just yesterday I threw out an old (had for at least 20 years) worn out (originally heavy denim fabric, worn so thin it finally frayed and ripped), oversized men's shirt that I wore during a very memorable horseback riding trip through Tuscany in the 1990's. It was also brought many places and either worn by itself or layered as an outer layer for many outdoor activities like hiking with my dogs, friends, and the children's sporting activities over the years.

I also still keep my old leather riding chaps from my teenage years, that I scrimped and saved for for more than a year to be able to buy, even though I no longer have horses or ride. They hang in my garage and are dried out and stiff now, but just touching them and smelling them brings back some of the best years of my life and the individual horses that I have known and loved.

This sappy Mary Chapin Carpenter song, This Shirt, always tuggs at my heart because I can relate to the sentiments: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AbL1LptZ8Vc

Funny, I'm not all that sentimental about clothes in a good way. But I donated all the clothes I wore to court last year, I couldn't bear to have them in them around, I didn't ever want to look at them again. If clothes have bad memories associated with them I don't ever want to wear them again.

Yes, I also have a stash of sentimental clothing, many of them beautiful dresses and blouses made for me by my mother, and they are absolutely imbued with her love. I also remember the dress she made me for the first day of kindergarten, a gorgeous amber plaid shot through with turquoise thread. These pieces still have a place in my close.

Gingham. I love love it. In fact I am searching for some new pieces to replace some old clothes I have.
I see on Pinterest there are so many postings dedicated to gingham.

Absolutely. I am so sentimental, and particularly about clothes as they relate to memories, and to my mom especially since her passing.

In fact, last summer I posted a new dress that I couldn't resist buying. Even though I didn't "need" a dress, it appealed to me not only because it fit and flattered me so well, but it was a beautiful floral print on a black background, and the floral reminded me of my mom. I will occasionally be out shopping and see a print that makes me smile because it looks like something she would have loved. She adored prints!

I also have a small stash of sentimental clothing items that belonged to my mom, my dad, my grandmother, and even my great-uncle (my grandparents passed away before I was born, so he was the closest I had to a grandparent). I have even kept a couple of sentimental items I wore when I was younger, but I'm gradually becoming more selective about what I hold onto.

As for newer things, I enjoy seeing items out in the stores that remind me of styles from my childhood or young adulthood, but I will ONLY buy them if they fit into my life and my style now.

Absolutely! I like items with a personal story. I have several items that have lived their own life before I got it and i also attach memories to certain pieces.

Laura, funny that you mention gingham. I absolutely adore gingham and I think the main reason is because my mom always loved this print and got me the loveliest pink gingham pencil miniskirt when I was about 14 or so. I was discovering the joy of dressing up as my body was also finally becoming more womanly. When I think of it now... I can't believe I ever gave up that skirt.

Also: I'm from Brazil and there we also call this print "vichy". I had never seen anyone call it by this name here until I read your post now. You made me smile. And also realize that I need to get some sort of updated gingham item!

Heck yes. I feel really attached to some of my clothes. I have kept certain pieces for years that I still wear but these items tend to be classic pieces like jumpers, scarves, some jeans and a dress or two.
It is funny for me that I love gingham so much as it reminds me of my grandmothers home in France. In France lots of everyday things are in vichy or gingham. However, when it comes to my shirts, many in gingham, which I have a great rotation of, I never bat an eye come time to part with them.
I would have an impossible time getting rid of the clothes I am attached to.

My search for a mustard coloured coat is in part a sentimental quest. My first 'new' winter coat (vs hand me down) was a mustard coloured wool coat I got when I was 8 or 9. I liked another coat, and my Mom liked the mustard one, so that is the one I got. I hated that coat at first, and I know my Mom was frustrated when I went back to wearing an ill fitting brown hand-me-down when I had this beautiful (but unloved) coat to wear. I trace my long aversion to mustard as a clothing colour to that incident.

About 10 years ago I got a mustard coloured turtleneck sweater. It was excellent quality and deeply discounted, and when I tried it on, I 'heard angels singing'! Every single time I wore that turtleneck, I got compliments - about my eyes, my hair, my skin...it was just a great colour for me.

So, Mom was right. And, now I want a coloured winter coat, and to reclaim 'my pretty', and perhaps, even honour my mother for (sigh) being right. Again.

KM, thanks for your kind words! I took my first plane trip when I was seven, too. From Providence, RI to Milwaukee, WI. I wore a white "slip blouse", it was a blouse with a slip attached, and a black print ( they called it a provincial print) cotton full, skirt with an elastic waist. Black patent Mary Janes and white socks. The stewardess let me wear her hat, (!!!), and pass out gum. This would have been in 1957.

I so enjoyed reading all of your replies!

Tania, I've also been enjoying your original thread on the jacket.

Angie, somehow that doesn't surprise me about you!

Gradfashionista, yes re: food. It goes hand in hand with fashion for me...

Retailgirl, that's lovely that you remember all this. I do too, regarding certain outfits for special periods in my life or events. I remember what I wore the first time I took a plane trip when I was 7, decades ago. And so lovely that your mom made you dresses. I've kept some things my grandma knitted and it's like wearing a hug.

Firecracker, your post made me think maybe I should get that sweater... In high school I also borrowed a sweater--from my dad--a mustard-colored cashmere blend from Scotland. It was the era of oversize and my dad is not big. I think he might still have that 30-year-old sweater, and if he does I might raid his closet again!

Yes! I had a similar reaction to the sweater I'm wearing today, a fuzzy cardigan that reminded me of the ones I used to borrow (we're talking extended loan!) from my mother in high school and college. She had two cardigans that were this same fuzzy knit, and they were too big for me, with sleeves that were too long. I just loved wearing them. When I saw this one from Free People at NAS, I almost bought it, out of sheer sentimentality. Then I thought better of it: it didn't further my goal of being a little more sophisticated with my style, and it wasn't in colors I was especially wanting to add to my wardrobe. In fact, I wasn't sure it would play very well at all with my wardrobe, except with black, which I would rather keep in a more subordinate role in my wardrobe. And yet. . . a couple of months later, when it went on sale again, I bought it. I'm glad I did, and am wearing it quite a bit now.

Love that sweater! I'm sentimental about clothes; I could probably tell you what I wore for each first day of school, job interview, date, you name it. My mother made many of my clothes when I was a child so the dresses were imbued with her love. When I was as young as six she would take me with her to the fabric store and let me choose the fabric and trim for my dresses. I have kept some things that have sentimental value, even though I know I'll never wear them again. Unfortunately, I don't have any dresses my mother made for me because they got handed down to my cousins, but I do have some doll's dresses that she made.

I'm only sentimental about items I've owned for a long time, where I can recall specific experiences associated with the garment. I've never bought a garment because it reminded me of experiences, but that may change in the future. Food, however, is something I've bought because of its association with others.
