Your plan sounds good! Can't wait to see the results! (Also, I just wanted to tell you that you might want to consider a Brazilian Blowout. They work wonders on curly/frizzy hair - and for "normal" curly/frizzy hair they last about 90 days - on your cowlick it may not last that long - I'm not sure. But it will save you TONS of time on styling your hair everyday and wrestling with that cowlick! Also, it makes your hair very soft and shiny - something that us curly/frizzy-haired people very seldom experience! They are kind of pricey here in CA - around $300. - but sooooo worth it! My hairdresser did it for me for half price because I was one of her first clients to try it - and I LOVE it! I will definitely do it again. I also only have to wash my hair about half as many times as I used to. Overall, it was a great investment for me!)

Wow wow wow!

I am so excited by your replies and suggestions everyone. Thank you VERY much!

[Guilty admission - maybe it is time to upgrade the product, thanks for the hint......]

OK - here is what I am going to do: (Work with me here... )

I am going to go shorter, to about an inch below my chin. This will remove the seriously dead ends and still give me some movement. It will also be cooler in summer and be faster for me to style. I have a swimming pool at home and I like to swim in the summer, so longer hair would be a pain. (This is truly one of the perks of living in the sunshine state! Coupled with the fact that my hubby makes a very nice poolside attendant. Ooops, sorry, TMI, I get sidetracked so easily when I'm tired! ;-))

I really like Taylor's suggestion, I will make sure I ask for some "chunky layers" cut in to avoid the mushroomy look (which I am truly over!). That way if I want to look sleek and sophisticated I still can, I can still have it curled (I'm planning on going for a retro wavy 30-40's glam for the wedding) or I can have it textured and funky when I want to feel like a yummy mummy. I will be brave and go for a moved over parting and a long fringe. If it doesn't work, I know you'll all be honest and it can grow.

I'm not going to get the fringe cut super short, which really will give me battles, but will try to get the hair dresser to make it so that I get the fringe "look" and it softens my high forehead. And after, I shall hope that my husband doesn't start humming "Mickey!" when he sees me!

I have been dying my hair myself at home lately and have deliberately gone past those three weeks this time because of the wedding. This time because an even colour matters, I will go to a professional and will get it done as a mid chocolate brown (with not too much red - my dress is red and my skin has pinkish tones - it makes me worry if I end up with red on red on red) and ask for just a few highlights, picking up particularly the greys around my face and a few more to highlight the movement. Possibly in a dark caramel/toffee - something that will work and isn't too orange.

Wow! That's it. I am so excited now. The "do" will take place sometime this week to enable me time to come up with a contingency plan if it doesn't work out.

Thanks once again everybody!

PS - Scarlet, I'm so glad I'm not the only one guilty of writing epic posts!

I didn't have time to read the other replies, but here is my suggestion based on the photos:

I think you should get a long bang with texture. You have a long forehead, like me, and I think this would balance your face nicely. Learn to trim it yourself for the best result.

Or, at the least, part your hair further over towards your ear so that your bang falls over your forehead more. You could also just trim the sideswept bang a little...this would help if fall over your forehead as well, rather than lying flat along one side of your face.

You seem to have a square-ish face, so maybe some layers and curls would look good rather than a strightened blunt cut? With the right product and a new drying procedure you might find your hair curls nicely and takes less time to style...this was a site others mentioned on the forum that I found useful:

http://www.naturallycurly.com/

First..you are lovely!!...and quite funny, I swear I can hear your voice!

I would recommend staying away from bangs if your hair tends to be frizzy with humidity...it will be a constant struggle .

I would recommend covering all over with a rich chocolate brown and some very subtle ...low maintenance highlights...they needn't be touched up each time the color is, and a chunky layered bob...it will add texture as well as dimension to your style:)

Checking back in here to say there is no mushroom whatsoever in that photo number 2, my friend. Your hair looks good there. I was just thinking what would be even more super. You are clearly handy with a hair iron/dryer, so I would not let the cow lick keep you from bangs/fringe.
If that is really what your hair looks like air-dried, then I second Megan's recommendation for searching out products that are working for you. The right shampoo makes all the difference in the world for my hair. When it comes to the issue of frizz, at some level though there is only so much you can do when heat and humidity are working against you, but nevertheless when I am committed to giving myself a good blow-out and using good product, I can keep it together for an evening out.

Finally, if your hair is difficult in the sense of different textures, cowlicks etc. you need more than most a really excellent hairdresser. Don't let anyone do anything drastic until you trust them. Bad layers or fringe is far worse than a perfectly lovely bob that you can style very well for the wedding. I think you can tell pretty quickly by how someone is interacting with your hair if they know what they are doing.

And finally finally, if your hair tends to be wild, be careful going too short. I find a little length/heft really helps me keep mine under control. The only advantage to going shorter is it makes the drying/styling process faster if you are committed to doing that every day. I would be concerned about looking poofy on off days.

Also, as a note on color, I have a brunette friend in her 20s who colors her hair to cover greys. She does it herself but keeps forgetting which color she used and over time it has given her the most amazing rich-looking color, FWIW.

I was also going to say that I think bangs would do wonders for you. As Kim says- they look more youthful. Maybe instead of full color (because your natural color is very pretty)- your stylist can do some highlights that would hide the gray? Too bad you don't have a stylist that you really love- I'm sure a good one could work with your cowlick.

Katiepea, I like the idea of a well-cut fringe and some soft layers around your face. This would bring out your pretty features and banish any trace of boring. The darker hair color is striking on you!

I also like the darker brown like in your avatar. What about a layered style that you can wear both scrunched or straightened. I'm wondering about something like the style Theresa had before her pixie. But I've really got no idea what I'm talking about so I'll just look forward to seeing what you come up with.

Katiepea, the difference between my hair when I use a great shampoo and conditioner vs. cheap stuff is HUGE.

this hair oil is also AMAZING http://www.catwalk.com.au/www/.....bwodO3VrIA

I have a cowl lick too and I deal with it by blow drying it in the total opposite direction first then back the way that I would wear it normally. Does that make sense?

I had the same haircut issues as you do when I had a bob. What my hairdresser used to do with my mushrooming hair was to cut in layers. I had a graduated bob which used the thickness of my hair at the back but thinned it out towards the front. I had to straighten the side parts though, but I am sure there is also a suitable bob out there for wavy hair as well.

Colour-wise, I quite like the darker colour in the second photo, and I think some highlights in a slighter redder shade would look quite nice in combination with the brown.

Hmmmmm, thank you for your comments so far! Megan I live in Brisneyland. I so wish I could find a hairdresser here that could work with my hair. You are so lucky to have one that works wonders!

The first photo is pretty much my hair as it would look airdryed. It has a mind of its own and struggles to behave itself. It has been far worse since I've moved from the ACT to QLD, where the humidity has created absolute havoc.

I don't mind my avatar photo but the problem I'm having is that the humidity means my hair is constantly turning into a great big frizz ball. The ends are also getting very dry, despite my best efforts to protect my hair. I guess I was wondering if I went shorter and choppier (for lack of a better word) if this may help my fine hair behave itself?

Hmmmmm Queen Mum, bangs intrigue me - I've never really had one because of the cowlick. The one time I tried to cut a proper one into my hair, my husband giggled (yes, I swear he did!) and said that I looked like someone from a bad 1980's movie. (He kept singing "Aw, Mickey, you're so fine, you're so fine you blow my mind, hey Mickey! <clap, clap> Hey Mickey!!" <clap, clap> for weeks until it grew out. Yes I could see the funny side, but what a big tease! I'd need to make sure THAT didn't happen again..... :-))

The thing with photo two I am hating the most is the way it "mushrooms" out at the bottom. I think part of this problem is because my hair is fairly curly underneath as well. Maybe if I go shorter, so say to chin length, this would take care of this issue? And frame my little face? Would you get a couple of highlights thrown in around the hairline around my face to blend in with the greys and just to soften the darkness against my fair colouring? <sigh!> I really have no clue!

I'm always a big advocate for bangs (or fringe as all you foreigners insist on saying). With the cowlicks you probably cant' go for the full fringe, but possibly a sideswept bang? I do think most women look more youthful with a bit of fringe.
i also think you need some more layering around the sides to add some interest and texture.

What does your hair look like if you don't blow-dry or straighten at all? Maybe you should post a picture of your hair air-dried so we can see what it looks like naturally. I always liked your avatar image, but it would be a lot of work to straighten every day.

Besides that my first thoughts are that you would look good with a darkish brown bob and a couple of shorter layers hitting at the jawline or so to frame your face. I like the idea of a light swooping fringe on you. I myself have a cowlick right front and center in my hair, but I find it pretty manageable to take a minute to blow dry my fringe to keep it in check.

Now first off KP, you are NOT old, faded or unkempt at all - perish the thought! I am absolutely clueless about both hairstyles and styling hair, so I can't offer much constructive advice other than to say that I agree with rute, I do lie your hair darker, as pictured in your profile pic. What about a rich brown, or a rich red colour? I think I also like it bob-length as well, it frames your face beautifuly. Sure your hair has a cowlick, but I'm impressed how well you can tame it with an iron! Have you ever tried embracing the waves and curling it instead?

Hmmm, I had a great Toni and Guy cut awhile ago that might work- it's called the transient graduation

http://www.toniandguy.com.au/ModelsRequired- click on transient graduation in the table on the right of screen.

I think a little darker might be good and easier to maintain but I have to say that picturing hair styles/colours on people is not something I'm very skilled at.

Katiepea- you are not in Sydney are you? If you are, I have the most BRILLIANT hairdresser.

Love the color (a bit darker) and the cut you have on your photo that is on the forum!
Like the side bank on you and that lenght.. you could add more fun making a bob shorter at the back and longer at the sides!
