Thanks for recapping, Maya. In total agreement about it being offensive. Blokes who believe that would have a hard time in most of Europe, Tokoyo, Hong Kong and Taipei. Judging by the street fashion, they would think most blokes are gay.

Enjoy your crush. Men improve with age. FOR SURE.

Sara, start getting those barrel chested men into wider bottoms on your side, and I'll take care of it on this side.

Well this has been a fun thread to read LOL

Firstly - Maya - Jarred Leto is defintely one very spunky guy and if you ever tire of him, send him my way LOL

As for the skinny jeans = gay thing - I don't agree either - my youngest brother is very heterosexual and has a pair! And I definitely admire them on the right man...!!!

But, I think, particularly where I live (Hicksville at times!), it is a very common male thing... but they use the word "gay" to be derogatory not actually relating to sexuality IYKWIM.

I was actually at a trendy bar one sunday afternoon with my other brother and some of their fellow "country" mates, and our table was very much in the minority because the boys were wearing "normal" shorts as opposed to skinny shorts/jeans. The boys at our table automatically took a disliking to these guys and we ended up leaving - all because they decided that boys wearing skinny clothes were not the type of people they wanted to be around - it wasn't because they honestly believed they were gay, but because they had decided they were just different and they all had an "attitude".

I was really quite horrified that they could actually leave because of something so silly... (And the guy playing the guitar was incredibly SPUNKY and I wanted to stay and keep fluttering my eyelashes at him LOL).

So after all this rambling, I think that we women can definitely appreciate fashion forward men whereas fellow men are threatened by it.

Funny, when I think of Jared I think of Fight Club, Requiem for a Dream, American Psycho, and 30 Seconds to Mars. MSCL doesn't even come to mind. It seems like a good show, I just don't watch dramas of any kind. Even Law and Order is too dramatic for me.

I am very finicky and picky about the opposite sex and probably see about 300 men before finding even one that I find attractive...so the few times it does happen, I lose my head a little...

Totally hear you on fashion persona Rosie. I guess since I'm not into outdoorsy types, and I'm more into cultured/arty/hipster/rock star types, my preference makes some sense I'm cringing at myself for being so boxed into these types, but I can't help it! It's just how I am wired.

I'm so lost I had to google Jared Leto - but it was worth it I'm game for trying a bit of MSCL too (I was busy with babies in 1994 and missed everything).

I love slim fitting clothes on guys when it results in a Euro vibe.

And, Angie, thank you for keeping barrel-chested guys properly balanced (I've seen a few who could use your help!)

OK, just watch an episode! Seriously. It is just a good show. My parents and my grandma thought it was quality, even though they had no choice in watching it. It is nothing like 90210 or any of the high school dramas on these days.

This clip is why I loved him twenty years ago...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lVpAWS3ZB5o

Maybe we all just remember it too fondly, I don't know. It's actually an interesting show to come up as a topic in this thread because being gay is an issue they deal with, which was pretty rare in the early 90's.

I actually remember when Banana started carrying more slimly cut pants. It was during a time when, for some reason, I would always buy my brother clothes at Christmas. It really threw me off at first and I couldn't imagine him liking the pants as a guy in his early 20's, right outta college. He definitely wears slimmer straight-legged pants now and looks terrific in them. He's over 6'3" and even though he's pretty slim, if he wore a tighter leg it would look really funny on him because it wouldn't mesh with his outdoorsy/finance world persona.

I guess that is kind of it - I think the pants that match personality and venue look the best! Except for super baggy and pants like San described - those never look good.

Maya, I think maybe you should write a letter to this guy and tell him exactly how you feel. Write exactly how you wish you could have responded. Then burn it.

As to the rockstars not wanting to date an older woman, I know you were being tongue in cheek but for some reason I just don't think that is true. Of course, this whole conversation is tongue in cheek, I realize. (rockstar conversation)

Angie, this had nothing to do with how flattering slim fits are on men. It was about the perception that all slim cuts are "gay." I found that rather offensive.

April, I can't think of anything I'd rather do less than watch high school drama. I'm sure it was a great show, but my TV watching habits have historically excluded drama. I don't even know if Jared could change my mind. I meant that I was young when MSCL was on TV, not now. I was maybe 10? 11? So I had no interest in it.

Agrace, all of my rock star crushes over the years have been in their late 20's (at least at the time I had a crush on them). When I was 13, all of my crushes were 26-29. I suppose I could date a younger man, but no rock star wants an older woman :p

After 30, rock stars become AGING rock stars. It's like modeling--one of the few professions in which 30 is considered old.

Jared Leto is an exception because he doesn't age, evidently. I like to believe it is the result of his diet

Yes, Jared Leto was in 'my so called life' back in the mid-nineties! He is not lying about his age!

I've decided once a person is past about 25 I can no longer tell age. But he is obviously aging very well.

And, Maya - why do you think 30 is the last chance you have to date a rockstar? ;)
Btw, I was ROFL at whomever said they feel like 'Cougar with a capital C' in the beginning of this post. Too funny!

But back to the main question - I love slim fitted clothing on some men and some men, not so much. When I worked for Banana Republic for years I got used to a more slim fit for men and I think it looks really nice on lots of men. As Angie said, there are men that it does not work so well on strictly because of proportions. But America is mostly just not used to seeing men in slim fitting clothing (past the teenager/ Jonas brother phase) in the mainstream/ corporate America. We're behind in that way

I like a man in sleek clothes best. Greg is almost 42 and that's all he wears - skinnies with scrunch most of the time, with sleek tops.

That being said, I dress men for a living too. The overly barrel chested man does not look good in skinny jeans. He looks like he's going to topple over. I pop that body type in straight legs or slim boot cuts and a fitted shirt. That way they're proportions look balanced.

I've forgotten what the question was? Need tea.

Maya, no one who enjoys looking at Jared Leto is too young for MSCL! Get thee to Netflix, woman. It's the best dramatic representation of high school that I've ever seen (and I was waaaaaay out of high school when it was on the air.) It was too far ahead of its time and only lasted one season. A shame.

There are nice manly skinny jeans and then there are silly teeny bopper skinny jeans, don't you think?
I saw two young men coming out of Abercombie and Fitch, is that the right spelling? One had on skinny jeans that also rode half way down his butt. I could see half his boxer shorts and it gave me the creeps BIG time. The other fellow looked like a typical teen/young man to me.
My thoughts and feelings about this skinny young guy with skinny jeans riding half way down his butt was, well never mind, let's just say I wanted to get away from the creepiness fast.
I know this sounds harsh, but I did wonder why in the world he was flashing his blank blank blank.

My bf's roommate is Bulgarian, and both him and his fashion-model brother wear slim cut, exceedingly fashionable and flattering clothing. Every time I see them, they just look so polished and sophisticated and "Euro" and at the same time down-to-earth and approachable. I love their look, and have never thought either were even remotely gay.

My bf is not a skinny guy, and the only time he put on skinny jeans was for a good laugh in the fitting room. That being said, I adore it when he dresses in clothes that are more tailored and skim his body. He has baggy ripped jeans from years ago that he'll pull out from time to time and I let that go, but on the whole he has moved on to a look that is mature and and yet fun, and I think he sees the difference in himself and how he is perceived.

I agree that slim fitting clothes are much, much better than baggy. Some guys just really hide in their clothes!! It's almost comical.

But I feel really mixed about skinny, tight-fitting men's clothes. I grew up going to indie rock and punk shows(and still go sometimes!) surrounded by guys in tight jeans and tight shirts and I've come to associate it with arrogant, pretentious, immature boys. hahaha I'm talking about super skinny jeans though. Straight leg jeans don't give me the same vibe.

I really think slim fitting clothes just come down to taste, and not sexuality. I would LOVE for my fiance to wear slim fitting Euro clothes, but he gawks at them -- says he wants to be comfortable (groan). We were walking through Nordstrom men's department yesterday and I was pointing out all the fabulous clothes I wish he'd wear and he just rolled his eyes at me. He didn't call the clothes gay though! :)

That said, I still make him dress in MUCH more fitted clothes than he'd naturally wear. I really dislike super baggy clothes. Looks sloppy and messy.

I did gently force him to try on a pair of men's skinny jeans at Gap a long time ago, and I will admit that they looked really silly on his larger frame.

My husband doesn't wear true skinny jeans, but he does wear fitted straight jeans, and I much prefer those to baggier styles. He also wears his shirts and suits very slim.
I think it's so hilarious that the "older" crows is crowing over the Jonas Brothers, but I myself have always loved Sean Connery in the older James Bond movies, those slim suits, woo hoo! Big fan.

Ugh, I'm glad/dismayed so many of you relate. Ele, I used to get that too. I remember my friends meeting my crush who eventually became my boyfriend and "worrying" for me that I might be disappointed because he was clearly a closeted homosexual (I posted a piccy if him once, if you recall).

Say something you know is offensive and try to backtrack on it by saying "no offense". Yes I know I did this on the maxi dress thread but I don't think anyone would actually be offended. Maxi dresses aren't exactly a personal, sensitive issue.

As for Jared...well, it would not be the first 38 year old man I had a crush on (high five Taylor...). I would like to know what fountain of youth he drinks from though. I'm too young to appreciate MSCL. I know him as a very talented film actor and a musician with a dreamy voice.

Jared Leto is definitely hot, but definitely not lyingabout his age - I remember watching My So Called Life 20 years ago, and he most definitely was not 4! :-P

My husband (who is most definitely not fashion-forward) has a pair of skinny jeans and I love them on him.

Whew. Why do you have to talk when I'm sleeping ;)

Maya, are you vegetarian? Nice to hear that, because so am I. Good luck to you and Jared ;)

I think that clothes do not reflect the sexuality, but rather the personality.
He's gay: http://www.artfagcity.com/word...../gaahl.jpg
And he's straight: http://c.wrzuta.pl/wi3745/000e.....s%20%3B%29
Nice, huh? I don't like the strereotype about gays looking feminine and lesbians looking masculine. It's not true, because I know many people who contradict that somewhat popular view. There are some who try to establish different categories, like dividing lesbians into "femmes" aka "lipstick lesbians" and "butches" aka "bull dykes" (what an awful phrase, btw). Those people usually think that in gay couples someone must be the "wife" and the other person must be the "husband", which is even worse, but somewhat funny. And finally, there are many LGBT people whose appearance doesn't "match" their personality, myself included. I think I'm on the feminine side with my long hair and high heels, but I'm not the girly, submissive kind of a person. And I prefer feminine women too.

Sorry about my kind of OT musings, but I don't really know much about men

ah ah funny post!

What a stupid comment! You did well holding your tonge! Euro men use much slimmer lines and, THANK GOD, they are not all gay ;)

Now men (at least here in Europe) take care of themselfes (much more than on the past), they do facials, put day cream on the face and love dressing well, good shoes, good suits.

Fitted clothes are a must to men and women (as oposed to baggy and sloppy)!

This is the type of thoughtless expression which is no longer suitable to be spoken. In the UK when I was at primary school 'that's gay' was a common figure of speech. Of course we had no clue of the meaning or how offensive it could be. It may have been an innocent slip of the tongue which he later apologised for.

I love a man in slim fitting trousers, Ben recently picked up a pair of microcheck straight legs and look utterly delicious wearing them. I would like to think my husband is not gay ;)

p.s. gosh I miss this but must get back to work!

I can tell you that as an ex country high-school teacher from the mid 90's (*gasp* where did that time go?!) I remember very clearly that the teenage boys used to call just about everything that they didn't deem to be cool as being "gay". It used to drive me craaaaaaazzzzzzzyyyyyyyy!

As such, if I heard a remark like that, I would probably eye-ball him, roll my eyes and say "X, that is such a 90's thing to say. "Gay? Seriously?!" Times have moved on buddy!" (I mean seriously - is he 15 or 30?! Grow up man!)

PS - Maya, I just had to add that my hubby is vegetarian and I am also mostly vegetarian. (I cook all meals and can't be bothered to cook a meat meal and a vegetarian meal for my family, so I cook only vegetarian dishes - have done so for many years.)

As such, if I ever came to New York I would be so excited to get you to tell me about (or take me to!) all the best veg restaurants around. Jared would be welcome to come as well of course.

I hate to say this, but speaking as someone who LOVED Jared Leto almost 20 years ago (ok, maybe 17), he is not lying about his age. But he is most definitely hot. Maya, I am hoping you have seen My So-Called Life???

I think what the gentleman said was stupid, and a reversion back to when he was a kid. Guys his age just didn't really wear pants like that growing up...do you know where he is from?

I personally do not love "skinny" jeans on men, but also dislike extremely baggy jeans. I think a slim cut can look great, yet it seems that there are still certain "types" of guys who wear these styles and people commonly stereotype. I'm a California girl who didn't grow up around a lot of hipsters, and my preference for semi or relaxed pants reflects the outdoorsy/surfer area I grew up in. (Suits and dress pants are a different story - no way should they be relaxed.) I don't really love the jeans I see on so many guys these days. I like the "All-American" type when it comes to casual attire. Now that I say it, talk about a term that should be changed and broadened - "All American" should include everyone.

I think most people still have a long way to go before they change their associations of certain styles with certain "types" of people. I had a similar reaction to that which Ele had about A when I realized the author of a blog I follow is a lesbian. (Ele, love your blog, fyi.) I felt so ashamed that I was surprised that this super-flirty feminine woman was gay. I still feel bad about it.

My husband is a skinny euro nerd. He looks perfect in slim fitting clothes and in particular one close fitting suit. I swoon every time he wears it. He also has some tight leather pants for the motorbike which are very nice. I'm not aware of any homosexual tendencies, but then, I don't know where he goes on that bike...;)

Well obviously I'm going to agree with you, Maya. People can be so stupid, not to metion offensive and backward. Isabel, great points about clothes not necessarily portraying our sexuality. Also look at A from academichic- I was surprised when I first read that she was a lesbian, though if I'm following my own mantra I really shouldn't have been!

There is definitely a huge Europe/North America divide when it comes to men's fashion, and how it affects our perceptions. You wouldn't believe the stupid comments I've got over the years with my bf- people snidely commenting that he might be secretly gay or whatever. I usually tend not to comment on this and am just happy that he has style, and isn't wearing baggy chinos and polo shirts from the Gap! And like Maya, I like a guy in slim clothing- so I guess I'm living in the right place :)

Pst, Taylor, I feel the same way about Cary Grant. And Christopher Plummer in the Sound of Music- I was always in love the with the Captain!
