Did any of you knitters (I am not one) see this hat Audi knitted? I LOVED it... the whole look actually!

This sounds just like one of my bookmarked images!
http://www.jcrew.com/womens_ca...../32566.jsp
I think the marled yarn will look beautiful. I'm currently knitting a cowl as well, mine is just a basic moss stitch on regular needles with a thick yarn (I plan to sew the two ends together once it's finished since I have no circular needles). Be sure to post pictures when you are finished!

Wow, you were right about Ravelry. I found a pattern that uses similar weight yarn, it's called the Aspen Neck Cowl. And because I have 10 skeins (125m/skein) I can probably make two. The yarn is a marled (hope that's the right term) black and white.

Great post! I had never heard of Ravelry before (great name for those of us familiar with unraveling). Yep, I've done it. I think you could handle either pattern, and I'm a beginner as well.

I recently made five scarves for Christmas gifts. Each scarf required one skein of yarn, I did them in garter stitch and finished by edging with coordinating eyelash yarn. I used "Angel Hair" yarn from Joann Fabrics. It's fabulous.

I loooooooooooove Ravelry! Please add me as a friend! My name of there is Nicole1484. I would love to see your guys projects!

And yes, Ravelry has TONS of free patterns and rates them on difficulty and you can read user comments etc. I think you will really enjoy using circular needles. Makes stockinette go super fast!

More ravelry love here! Tons of patterns to browse through and also lots and lots of advice and inspiration.

Both of these patterns look pretty doable for an adventurous beginner, so I think you should be fine with either.

Glad to see all the Ravelry love here! I've got the same username there as here, feel free to friend me and let me know you're a YLF gal if your username is different over there.

Annagybe, you can absolutely do either of those patterns. A few increases/decreases, joining the ends together to make a loop, or knitting on circular needles is a good next step for a beginner - there's lots of info online on how to do those things.

I third the Ravelry recommendation. There are lots of free cowl patterns to browse. I knit the Eternity scarf I wore in my recent WIW post. That one was very simple too and can be worn long or doubled.

I second the ravelry.com recommendation - it's great! I also like http://www.knitty.com

I also like browsing library books on knitting and making photocopies of the patterns I like (it's rare to find a book with more than a couple patterns that I actually love).

I am just a beginner but I like to knit simple things that I don't have to think too hard about. I like knit purl knit purl in front of a good movie. I don't like to rip out either, so I guess I am a lazy knitter.

Anna- the second pattern is definitely simpler than the first, but if you are adventurous you can probably handle the first. You don't have to pay for knitting patterns, though-
http://www.knittingpatterncent.....ectory.php
has a ton of free patterns, and if you join http://www.ravelry.com there are even more.
Tomorrow, I am wearing an infinity scarf that I knitted. I love getting to wear my hand knits

I'm very much a beginner knitter. I can knit, purl and do stockinette stitch on straight sticks. I've only made scarves so far.
I bought some gorgeous merino wool in Australia (8 ply but thin, uses 4 mm or #6 needles). I would like to make a cowl.
Does this look like a complicated pattern?

http://www.etsy.com/listing/62.....ng-pattern

or should I stick to something like this?

http://www.purlbee.com/cashmer.....l#comments
