Thanks, Firecracker, Suz and Style Fan. Such great advice!

FIrecracker I love Ecco's too, they are near the top of the brands I look at these days. So well made, comfy etc.

I'm rethinking. Black was only one of the colors I was considering and I'm ok with buying multiple pairs. I'm planning to try on these black Josef Seibel ones in Nordstrom tomorrow. I ordered the blush EDs from Zappos and trying them out at home, so far so good, and I really like the look. The white/grey ones were an unexpected find at TJMaxx that I have not worn around the house yet. White with some grey. If these three all work out I could be all set!

Thanks again to all for the great advice and ideas!

chris, for you, I agree with others that a white sole is more in keeping with your style. My take is that you want a classic sneaker "look," to which a white sole is key. For Greyscale, I could see the black sole working really well, because it goes with her edgy all-black (or mostly black) style. On her, it will not look like part of a work uniform; it will look like part of her edge.
I'm looking forward to a new pair of sneaks this spring/summer, too. I bought the white Eccos here, and I have them in my possession already. I haven't worn them yet, though, as I just ordered the blush high-tops to compare and see which ones I will like better with my wardrobe. I must say the low-top Eccos feel heavenly, and I haven't been able to wear Eccos in a long time; I've been in between sizes. These were a very pleasant surprise.

I'm on the lookout for blue or black with a white sole this year. But oh, how I love my white ones.

Greyscale, yes it seems the devil is in the details. A more vs less sporty shape, white soles to lighten up the look, more white by going with white laces.....there is so much to think about to get them to be your own version of "just right"

Well, I thought I was wedded to the idea of black soles. But I actually just ordered a pair with white soles, so I'm not sure where I stand anymore! I really like the Caslon ones you ordered. The shape is simple and less sporty (my personal preference).

I ordered these new Stan Smiths just now, but I might prefer the flat, heavy sole on the Caslon sneakers and others like them.

kkards I love hearing your (or anyone else's ) light bulb moments. They often cause me to have a similar moment or opposite revelation so bring them on! Showing a bit of ankle is certainly a key part of making sneakers look "light" and stylish and that's not something I had thought of before.

light bulb moment!

1st light flash...I have black sneakers (more fashion shoes than true sneakers) and what makes them work for me is 1. the white sole, 2. skin....

2nd light flash...I have an issue with white shoes, but I wear white sneakers all the time (well all the time in the summer). the difference....Skin.

ie when I wear sneakers I never wear them with socks, and I always wear them with cropped or at least cuffed pants, so there is lightness between my shoes and my bottoms.

sorry, I realize my post is all about me, but you've helped me to understand a fundamental of what works for me, and maybe it will help you.

RobinF yes it is all about personal preference but I can't figure out what mine is Good suggestion that I try some outfits. Duh, of COURSE I need to do that, what was I thinking?

Joy I am definitely considering some lighter colors too, like blush. Silver would be another good idea.

Traci you are right about all-black sneakers sometime reading like a uniform...for a wait person for example. That's a very helpful comment, thanks.

Elizabeth P (and others) yeah that makes sense that the white sole makes them look less heavy. I have noticed those Joseph Seibel's for quite a while, they come it other colors too, maybe it's time to give them a try. More function that fashion, that's absolutely right and a great way to say it, and what I'm trying to move away from.

Jaileen yes I can see that those Clarks look orthopedic and in fact they almost are. I think of them as a black version of hiking shoes. I like the Caslons because they are much more sporty and actually are a lot like the Pumas

Angie what great advice, as always! I'll look at those finds you offered and will check out Clark too. I keep coming back to Eileen D footwear..maybe time to try them. You articulated very accurately what I'm trying to do.

Maneera I really like your addidas and nikes...although I wanted to stay away from the running shoe look which the nikes are.

Jenn those allbirds are pretty interesting and I think you are right about white or lighter details.

I have had the same problem with black sneakers looking too workman-like. I think a white sole, or some other light design detail helps break that up.

I've been looking at these, hoping the texture and slightly lighter laces will help:
https://www.allbirds.com/produ.....9693156807

I'm thinking black and grey for you, Chris. You love the first pair of workhorse Clarks because they feel magical on your feet - but they don't LOOK right for your style. Too chunky, heavy and black. You need something prettier. A white sole IS prettier.

I mentioned this in Greyscale's thread about black sneakers. Shiny all black shoes looks like uniform shoes to me. Someone else thought they look orthopedic. In this case, your Clarks look orthopedic to me.

I like the Pumas. They aren't shiny leather, and look sporty which I like. The shoes Elizabeth posted don't look uniform or orthopedic. They're cute.

First, the black ones. Of the ones you posted, I much prefer the white soles. I think it makes them look more spring/summer, less heavy. I have a pair by Josef Seibel which I love, are comfortable, and have been workhorses. Might be another option to consider, if you like the look of them... shown below.

Sorry the black slip ons don't work for you, I quite like those. Same with the Ecco's. The other ones, to be honest, look more function than fashion. We all need function as well, but you are probably missing that fashion element, which is why you aren't reaching for them. Updating with a more fashion forward pair this year seems like a great idea.

For me, it depends on the whole outfit. Solid black sneakers can very easily look like non-slip shoes sold through a uniform catalog. They can also look intentional, but I think it takes work. Because of that, I think if you want easy, the white sole mitigates the uniform factor right there in the shoe.

I find black sneakers hard to wear. I have one old Merrell pair that are still around because they are comfortable and still in great shape since they have not been worn much. As Robin said, I like a white sole to break up the heaviness of the black, but that is a personal preference. I would go with a metallic first, maybe silver.

I’d want new fashion sneakers for spring, and would like to ask for some advice from the the sneaker-wearing YLF community. I am considering getting both black and nude, starting with black. I don’t love white
footwear, although I’m keeping an open mind, so I’m not looking for white right now.

Here is what I have now. Other than the black Clarks which are workhouses I’ve had for a few years, I bought them all last spring early in my big year of experimentation and don’t love any of them.

#1 Clark black leather sneakers. Very sporty. Great for walking all day but not particularly stylish or modern.

#2 Keds in white leather; very traditional style. Comfortable and I do wear them, but don't quite love them. .

#3 Ecco grey patent leather. Very comfortable. I sized up to fit warm socks, thinking I’d wear them in fall and spring, and they look a little big. They seem masculine, industrial (because of the lacing) , and hard
edge.

#4 Naturalizer Black faux leather slipons that are a bit uncomfortable after a few hours and I don’t love how they look

#5 Reiker Blue. Too sporty and clunky looking on the foot

I ordered a few pairs of black sneakers. I really like the streamlined look of a black body, black laces, and no metallic details. Find #6 (Caslon) is the one I like best, they fit well and I like the shape and overall look. I’m not sure whether to go with the white sole or maybe I’d prefer the black sole look that Greyscale posted about recently here: http://youlookfab.com/member/monochrome/. I posted a couple of those in finds #6 and #7.

I would love to hear your ideas.

How would you compare and contrast the style, the vibe, the overall look of the black sneakers with white soles vs black soles?
