I've had this happen before, and it's really annoying. I never thought of it being from a weak spot in the clothing, I just thought it was because my washing machine is very rough on clothes. Hopefully you will be able to get your money back!

Sorry to hear, that's very frustrating. Are you set on this sweater specifically or something from the Bay? If they don't end up replacing your sweater, EF is really great for merino wool--virtually indestructible-- their sweaters tend to run large.

Ugh. I'm wearing knits more this year, due to my roll-about-the-floor job. I'm just noticing that most of my knits last just 1 or 2 seasons, even the good ones. There will be replacing to do, even without bad luck like holes appearing in the dryer!

Hope you have better luck with your next purchase!

I've found L&T sweaters to be very good quality over the years, although I haven't bought any new ones in a year or two. Diana's explanation sounds right to me, I hope the cause was something specific to that one garment rather than a drop in quality overall. I have had good experiences with their customer support dept, but I guess that's not universal since you have not had good experiences. Good luck!

It probably had a weak spot (could be caused by badly spun yarn, a moth, someone who was careless with a box cutter, someone who tried it on while wearing snaggy jewelry, anything really) that only showed up once you washed it. Literally hanging by a thread that snaps when it gets slightly agitated in the washing machine. Almost certainly not your fault and they should refund you.

To be honest, though, with fine gauge merino knits it's a crapshoot. The nature of merino is that it's not a strong fiber, and when it's thin it's obviously weaker. IMO price is no guarantee whether or not it will last. These days I just buy the cheap uniqlo ones, which feel nice and come in lots of colors.

Years ago a lot of stores (like BR, J Crew, AT , etc) used to make merino-silk blend pullovers that were amazing. The silk adds sheen and strength and resists pilling. Unfortunately I haven't seen many silk blend sweaters in recent years. I do think that's the best formulation (50-50 wool and silk) for lightweight knits.

Lots of cheap wool knits out there right now. It's really disheartening. I'm not even sure how to tell, from looking at a NWT garment, whether or not it will last -- seems like a total crapshoot, and not very $-dependent. My Uniqlo sweaters, purchased for $20 each, seem to be holding up well. However, I wash all my wool knits by hand now, even the ones that claim to be machine washable.

This is a quality control gripe.

As you know, I am trying to add more brights (esp. reds) to my wardrobe. If you look at my wardrobe in my collections, you will see why this is a great idea! Compare to Angie's bright collection and you will understand why, looking into my closet, I was beginning to feel lacklustre. I love and thrive on colour and need to include more. I don't do her sour oranges and yellows, but I adore fuchsias, berries, and reds. Bring them on, I say!

To that end, I bought this simple true red merino tee from Lord and Taylor in the late fall. Six years ago I had great success with a charcoal merino t-neck from L&T; I washed it many, many times, wore it to the ground, multiple times a week for the first few years, travelled with it often, and am only retiring now because it lately developed some pulls that I could not mend. But again, this was after years of very hard wear (and I think my kitty was responsible for these pulls; I hadn't been able to clip his claws).

Well, I washed the new red merino sweater once, in delicate, in a non-agitating machine. As I was laying it flat to dry I noticed a big hole -- not a moth hole, but a jagged mess of a hole -- on the upper sleeve. There is no way I did that to the sweater, and no way my machine should have done that. It was washed with a bunch of other soft sweaters and nothing else.

So much for seeing red!

On the hunt again for more colour. I will take the sweater back to the Bay but don't expect much satisfaction from them on this.
