It’s great that you found a nice pair of jeans AND a new silhouette!
I like the idea of a tucked top and loose topper for bum coverage.

I love the idea of high rise at the front, but the back view is something I’m still not used to!

Bijou - If you internet shop alot it's key, otherwise, it gets ugly. That's why I've become so fanatical about getting out anything I don't want asap. It's still a lot back or forth on the card, but that's can't be helped. Yes, I do love me my black! When everyone else goes for color, hey "more for me!!!" The great thing is just to make ourselves truly happy!
Karen - that's a great color!! And such a pretty tee!! Sometimes, and I am the prime example, things work out but not quite in the way we orginally planned. Now you have something lovely to look forward to. But I bet it would work fine under a cardi or a blazer in fall!!
Angie - yes, high contrast girl! And you do it so magically! So fun and I know how the contrast and color energizes you. Perfect!

I did this with this tank. Bought it and returned it while I was traveling in San Francisco as I felt the color/fit wasn’t quite right for the skirt I was planning in, then was sad I didn’t have it when I returned home. It went on sale so I jumped on it. It came late in summer and I started traveling frantically again so I haven’t yet worn it. I hope I still love it in the spring!

Now that I think about, I need to find some higher waisted jeans. Still mostly mid rise in my closet (the ones that fit well). I’ve been too busy to look for the right pair.

I need to be a more vigilant returner, so this has not happened to me. Your outfit sounds fantastic. I love how you wear and enjoy black so much. I really enjoy it, even though it is a strong contrast with my colouring.

Angie - that makes perfect sense and I wonder if part of the preference is your fair coloring. That you Lisa and Ummlila all have light hair. For me light shoes have less reference frame. I have dark brown hair and eyes. Light shoes feel off. In fact I only like to show bare ankle in summer and only with black shoes. Also it's fab as more black shoes for me!!
Lisa - same question for you. Does the light shoe and ankle skin look better because of your lighter coloring? It makes sense that all back would be more visually jarring for you.
Angie - all perfect ped for you!!
JuniperGreen - congrats on the wide leg crops!! Nice!! Hope you enoy them!!
Ummlila- you look gorgeous in blue and in white!! Again, with your lovely blonde hair and light eyes you wear light colors so well. They look gorgeous on you!

Weather permitting, I like to show some ankle with them. I also like them with olive or white footwear.

I think I've just had a light-bulb moment as to why I find black jeans difficult to wear. Black jeans and black boots = too much . Need skin showing somewhere. Thanks Angie I have a pair of black embroidered jeans from last winter ready to try today, but I think I'll do it with loafers and sheer socks instead of with boots.

Gryffin, I like my black high-waisted skinnies more in Spring and Summer with Summer footwear. Exposed ankles. I don't like my booties with them that much. Too tight on the hem. I prefer a looser hem fit with booties when it's all covered up. These work well with my tall black riding boots of course, but the result is too black for my tastes. I am keeping them for Spring and Summer, IYKWIM. I will leave the black on black to you

Oh! I just thought of a "marinating" example that just happened to me... I bought a knit jacket at Costco about a year and a half ago. I almost returned it several times, but didn't... it was only $32 and for some reason that made me think "if it truly doesn't work, it's ok". Tags were still on until about a month ago. This past NAS I got the KUT plaid Diana (Donna) ponte pants, and they look FANTASTIC with said jacket. Comfortable, professional and flattering... a bit of a holy grail. I've worn them together twice since fall arrived. A ruthless edit would have negated what will become a favourite FFBO for me.

Elizabeth - great save!! But that’s what I meant. You could not give them up!! So glad that in the end they were a total win. That happened to me w a Zara place saver little gray man coat. It was perfect except the fabric pilled and was not good quality but cut and color was sublime. I had it boxed and ready for FedEx pickup and bailed. I enjoyed it very much for 3 yrs until I found its replacement. I will try and send w Lisa’s Judy have to find time.
Brooklyn - I used to be like that when my mail ordering was rare. Now really almost 100% of clothes for all of us are online shopping. That’s why I’m a stickler that returns must be immediate. So occasionally there is remorse and rebuy as above but less egregious mistakes that obviously needed return. It helps a lot that UPS picks up at my office and the post office is on the way home.
Jessikams - exactly. I definitely need more variety in my weekend wardrobe. It’s awesome when one piece provides more options and does not require a supporting act. So very happy

I am glad these worked out for you. I am also on the look out for button fly jeans.

I don’t usually buy return and buy again. Although once I bought-returned-bought again-returned again!

My problem is that I tend not to return when I should - because returning can be a bit of a hassle here. I am trying to be a more ruthless returner! But I also have had the experience of something marinating in my closet for a long time before I finally found a way to wear it that I enjoyed. It’s such a joy when that happens with something that I had just about written off as a mistake.

What a great story. You have such a way with words. I love how you describe how you styled them, I can almost see them (and would love a pm’d pic too ). Great solution!

It’s funny, I’m sure I’ve done a buy -return-buy, but for the life of me can’t think what. I do chuckle over one item though... my white Lululemon culottes. I came SO close to returning them. I even had them in a bag and walked to the store at lunch to do that. But something stopped me, and they have become one of my most worn summer bottoms.

Suz - IKR is that totally funny or what?!
Sal - I think I'd have a harder time in store because I could not try things on with other pieces. I have had the experience of thinking something doesn't look good, only to take the next step and actually style it, and it looks wonderful in context. And agreed anything you are still thinking about 2 wks after try on should be reinvestigaged lest it become the "one that got away..."
kathie - I so get that. And fantastic that the vest is a work horse. It's almost like the line in "Age of Innocence" about women leaving their new designer clothes unworn for a year. Sometimes something is such a departure, you know it's good, but you need to get used to the idea of it, as well as figure out the supporting act. I have a silk high low black EF top, the back almost like a tail coat. It's very dramatic, it has taken awhile to figure out how to make that work.
Runcarla - great jeans!! Awesome, and yes a new silhouette takes time to get used to. But uber flattering. That's awesome about the boots! I'd so glad they are working for you now, it's boot weather so perfect timing!!

Duh! My first pair of skinnies - and premium denim to boot! (JBrand Maria in 'Photo Ready') acquired 2 months ago (pic below) and in very high rotation since.

Also, I generally HATE boots and only wear them under duress when the weather (snow) requires it. I got my tall boots serviced at the cobblers. He took them down a quarter inch and added a rubber-ish non skid heel. They fit like a dream and now I can't wait to wear them!

I’ve not bought-returned-bought. But, I have definitely bought, had marinate in the closet for a year, and then figured out how to style. This happened with a long gilet/vest last year. Owned it for a year, wore maybe once. Restyled last year, and wore every other week, and had people ask about the vest every time I wore it.

Interesting - I can see how this can happen with online shopping. And good on you for recognising how to achieve the look you wanted. It sounds a good one.

I haven't done this - I might have once or twice tried something on in store, not bought it, and then gone in a week or two later and tried to get it. But for me, I usually know immediately whether I like something or not, and if I choose not to proceed, I rarely regret it or give it some thought. I do most of my buying in store - but 20% might be online now.

Fabulous! I’m sure these are great on you. And so fun that you have several ways to wear them after thinking you had none.

Joy - that’s very true. But sometimes you kind of “know” something is right or good before you actually understand “why” you feel that way of that makes any sense.

Sterling - way to go!! You win for persistence! Impressed!!
Donna - if you love them that much it is definitely worth stalking them at the right price and seeing how they fit. Good ideas both. Good luck, I really hope they work out for you!!
Angie - I did guild the proverbial lily and added a belt, although I liked it without, it feels very weird beltless. Are you still enjoying your black jeans? I really like the fabric on these colorwise, it's a clear true but slightly faded black with an almost striate texture with almost a grayish thread, gives a lot of life to the fabric and works best with true black because of the texture and color differential. BTW those are great jeans too!! Love them!!
