Fab scarf! I look in on all the shops, but I confess that I miss when vintage meant the 50s... all those clothes seem to be
gone now.

Some are definitely better organized than others. Color organization is a good thing. Its real easy to pick your own tones out of the "lineup." Housewares can definitely be a good bet too, and holiday decorations!

Wow! You thrifters find some amazing things--Suz's brocade top, Shevia's absolutely genuine Hermes scarf, all of LBD's wonders--I'm impressed!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems to me that to go thrifting well, you have to know what you're open to and know the stores.

The only two times I've gone thrifting were with the boyfriend here in Berlin in the 90s. First time was at a huge flea market. I had just gotten my apartment and we knew I needed lots of stuff. We wended our way through so much stuff that day--furniture, lamps, kitchenwares, and more! But I don't think I bought a single thing, because I didn't have an overall picture and couldn't figure out several things that went together. The other time was at a second hand clothing shop. Within 5 minutes of us walking in, he had found a dress for me--a little big then, a little small now, but at times just right. He clearly knew his way around that shop, whereas I was just overwhelmed.

There was a consignment shop near where we lived in Tampa. The one time I stopped in, I was trying to sell an EF skirt. The owner was very good at sussing out what I might like and understanding from a simple comment what direction to go in. That day I felt I was lucky to get out of there without a whole trailer full of stuff, but I wish I'd gone back and had her help me.

Consignment is definitely hit or miss for me. Accessories are often a good bet, and I have definitely found some workhorses-brown blouse, lbd, lace blazer, wine coat, and floral scarf. But, I've made many not so good purchases over the years, especially things I didn't notice had damage. Now I go in with the attitude of "why did the last person pass it on", since things aren't returnable.

I love thrifting! I've never found anything extraordinary but it's a good opportunity to try out styles I'm not sure about and don't want to spend much money on. I'm also a lazy shopper and hate going to multiple stores so I like that there are lot of different brands and styles in one location. Plus, my favorite thrift shop is organized by color so it's visually very appealing.

1 & 8: recently aquired vintage Maya-Quiche Indians hat

I love thrifting. Your scarf is beautiful. And Coach, well I love vintage Coach. I have thrifted many vintage Coach bags. Actually, many, many, many. Also, most of my scarves are thrifted.

Most recently I found a lovely grey quarter zip wool sweater and a forest green down vest with a hood. I’m not sure about the vest, though, for two reasons. One, it’s bulky to hang, and the other is my son said, “All you need are some Uggs and you’ll look like a sorority girl.” It wasn’t a compliment!

I LOVE me some secondhand, especially if they’re retro in style! I try to keep myself to a strict list of silhouettes, colors, and accessories. I shop equally between eBay (shoes, hosiery, Wolford separates) and Goodwill, with more occasional forays into consignment.

Sorry this comment is so long, but I have a huge enthusiasm for thrifting. If you’re ever in Atlanta, and want to go hunting, let me know!

I recently found an amazing Hugo Boss blouse at GW, that I’m planning to wear to a jazz open mic tomorrow with a longer black pencil skirt, black cinch belt, and black stiletto heels, in a sort of 1940s homage to Veronica Lake.

Here are some of my more recent treasures from 2018-2019 - mostly candid snaps - so PLEASE excuse the terrible lighting, disheveled hair, lack of makeup, absence of shapewear, highly contrasting underpinnings, and general background mess...

1) Magaschoni Blue-Green Silk two-piece suit. (Under $10 at Goodwill) The tag was mostly cut out, but I was able to ID the label, and the color, which is the most incredible sea-blue turquoise. I popped a white Wolford bodysuit under it. I’m a couple of pounds shy of the skirt fitting as well as I’d like but I’m confident I’ll be there in a few weeks. I plan to wear this to a singing gig at some point.

2). Persaman Embroidered Skirt - ($5 at Goodwill). This isn’t recent - ive had this skirt for several years. It seems to get worn about once a year, dressed up like you see here, or with summer sandals and a short-sleeve bodysuit.

3). Hugo Boss Blouse ($6 at Goodwill). As mentioned above.

4). I don’t have a full length photo, but this is a vintage camel coat from Saks, and a metallic blue/green scarf ($10/$3 at Goodwill). I got the coat last spring and started wearing it this winter.

5). West Coast Metallic Blue Leather Dress ($7 at Goodwill). I did some research - this dress retailed for something close to $2k. The company seems to be the descendant of the iconic North Beach Leather. I was about four pounds heavier in this photo, but this dress fits now. Where does one wear a leather dress? To a Mardi Gras gig on March 5th, with my new swing band.

6) MAAC London Bandage Dress. ($30 eBay). I love this dress so much - I bought it to perform in, but instead, it’s become the dress I wear to fancier events.

7). French Connection Bandage Dress ($7 Goodwill). I bought this in late October, and I’ve already worn it several times, to sing in. This dress underlines the importance of checking every rack at the thrift store - it was halfway off the hanger, shoved into a bunch of sweaters. The color caught my eye.

8). Miss Sixty Denim Dress ($7 Goodwill). It has pocketses, precious! And it’s an XL that fits like an 8, so, ignore the size tags when you see something cool on th racks, and try it on anyway. I always cinch it tight with a belt, and my baby sister has called dibs if I ever decide to purge it.

9). Long Military-Style Coat by Forever XXI ($7 Goodwill). I. don’t have a full length picture, but when I saw this last spring, I knew it had to go into my pirate costume capsule. I wore it to an open mic at Halloween.

you are lucky to have found such beautiful pieces. that's the thrill of thrift shopping. i used to shop value village in chicago with their colored tags indicating the % off. steeper discounts for older items. nothing super fancy, but i was clothed during college.

i tend to shop consignment now. much higher price range, but i tend to be looking for something specific.

I really enjoy second hand treasures! I love your silk scarf - I think it is Venice that is illustrated and I love particular colonnade especially. It will only be a matter of time until you come across a Hermes!

There are a few second hand and antique shops in my hometown. On Saturday mum and I did our normal weightwatchers and coffee and shop. Mum found a beautiful Hobbs dress and deep red bag with gold hardware. Both fab and good finds. I found a Max Mara hounds tooth pencil check skirt - part photo of below - it is gorgeous. It needs a small repair as the lining is showing. It is a bit of a duplicate because I have as a line houndstooth check skirt - so they are different in style but the same check. Here is a part photo of it. I am thinking it will wear like Tipi in The Birds! (Part photo as I was assessing the shirt - gorgeous but too big. )

Heh. Don't get me started. And don't shoot, but, and this is very obnoxious, I have thrifted what I am pretty sure is a genuine Hermes scarf. But I thrifted it for the color and pattern and did not realize what it was until months later when I was sorting my scarves. Which is very unlike me and pretty disconcerting.
But I ramble. Your scarf is beautiful, and there are many beautiful scarves to be found at second hand stores. Also, in terms of accessories, carefully look at belts, men's shoes (sometimes unworn and actually women's or women's size), jewelry (sometimes small hallmarks are missed), and sunglasses.
If the sun comes out I will add pictures later.

ETA Pictures - according to my online research it is a vintage Dies et Hore, by Hermes, but please don't hesitate to correct me if it looks fake!

What a fab scarf! I sometimes think that some Hermes and other silk scarves, such as yours, are interesting and beautiful enough to frame and hang on the wall.

Welcome to the world of second hand shopping. I have yet to score a really great bag, but I’ve found plenty of higher-end clothing, including new items with tags still on. My latest find was a fun pair of fuchsia pants in a long length and a couple Zella workout tops in perfect condition. The key is to go in without expectation...and to have time to carefully look around.

Oh, I love that scarf, Carla. I remember when you first showed it. The bag looks great, too! It's fun to find yourself in a new place where consignment shopping is better than in the past. I'm loving the consignment shops here in Vancouver and have made some purchases. I've also done some try-ons without purchasing.

The three first items in Finds are Vancouver buys:

Judith and Charles boiled wool pea coat,

Snow Queen coat

Pink Tartan jacket.

A few other treasures:

a cropped brocade shell dating from the 60s. I've had it since my very first days on YLF. It comes out rarely but when it works, it's the best thing ever.

Biba short jacquard kimono, also vintage from the 60s.

binocular case used as a bag (courtesy Mr. Suz).

I've also had a few fun try-on sessions this fall of items I didn't buy. One coat, below.

Carla, your finds are great. What an interesting scarf! I also prefer looking for accessories in vintage and consignment stores. I am not a big vintage shopper but I have found some gems. I don't have all my finds loaded yet.
My first big find was a Gucci bag. I was very excited about that one. I ran out of the store with it.
I also bought a Coach bag. See find. It is gorgeous leather. It is from a vintage store in Florida. They had a wall full of them. I may get another one this year.
I found an amber necklace that I rarely wear but I still love.
I also found an amber bracelet that I wear a lot. It is one of my favourite pieces.
I have bought several pieces of jewellery including some dark green beads, a blue topaz ring and a blue topaz pendant.
I also found a scarf in Florida. The colours are all beautiful earth tones.

Mr. SF gave me a ring from a vintage store when we first moved into together. It was an amethyst cocktail ring. It is quite striking and I wear it for special occasions.

I am new to second hand, but with a groovy consignment shop, an antiques store with a big textiles section, and 3 charity thrift shops in my community, I decided to look under some new-to-me retail stones!

Clothing was a bust - I'm too big/long limbed for clothing from earlier times, but accessories were a different matter. After panting after Hermes silk squares, I decided to experiment with an economy version first. Well. I LOVE my $2.50 silk scarf SO MUCH! It is the only thing I put around my neck these days. Furthermore, my obsession with Hermes scarves has been quieted (though I am going to go back to the antique shop because there are drawers full of scarves - and who knows what I might find!)

In the fall I found a Coach bag that has become my favourite. I do rotate things depending on my outfit, but I keep returning to the thrifted Coach hobo again, and again.

What about you? Do you shop second hand? How does it work with your style? Have you found any treasures to love? Bonus points for sharing pics!
