Such amazing thrifters here! I haven't had a lot of luck over the years but lately have dabbled in Poshmark and had a little more luck. I have purchased 18 items the last two and a half years and of those, half have been successes, a quarter OK (wearable but not exactly what I wanted) and a quarter don't fit or won't work for me. Since I stick to inexpensive items I can handle the odds. My best have been some pants that have become my regulars. I like that I can get the measurements of the item - although it isn't fool proof (a few of my worsts were also pants). Of course, no returns here so I take that into consideration.

Years ago I made some Thredup purchases but got frustrated because it was so hard to tell the fit and they reduced their return policies. Plus the pictures were so bad. Looks like they now include some measurements which is a definite improvement.

Carla, your thrifting is inspirational. I am on the third year of just buying second hand stuff. My thrifting partner died of Covid last year I can't imagine going without her. I have been buying mostly consignment stuff, but am unsure now of sizes. I have lost weight and Small is too big. Even my feet seem smaller. Everything must be tried on. What to do with tops that are now too big and gape under toppers.

Carla, you are a successful thrifter! My most successful second-hand shopping has been handbags, jewellery, and furniture. I won't post the furniture finds here, but Mr. SF and I love looking at vintage furniture and have acquired some lovely pieces.
I rarely buy new handbags, but I watch for good vintage bags. Not all my bags are in finds yet.

The ones I have in my collection are:
Gucci Crossbody - not in Finds
Gucci Camera Bag
Fossil Saddle Bag
Coach Hobo Bag

My vintage jewellery collection is:
Amber necklace
Amber bracelet
Amethyst ring

I have also found a few items over the years that have worked well in my wardrobe:
Brown cashmere sweater
Denim shirt
Scarf

I've done very little shopping this year but have had success thrifting. My goal was just to replace (my wardrobe is in a good place and I have other budget priorities).

Without planning, I promptly found a Land's End navy striped dress... I already have around 11 sleeveless blue summer dresses so I can't say I needed it, but it was beautifully made and a perfect fit (I'll link if I can find the post). https://youlookfab.com/welookf.....gotta-give

I wanted a replacement for my white Dr Scholl sandals that had given up the ghost. I was willing to pay for new Dr Scholl's or Birkenstock, but they don't exist in white in my size. Then I came across a pair of Clark's with cork sole and leather footbed, new with tags, while on vacation, browsing secondhand for baby books for grandbaby.

A second pair of sandals made a fortuitous appearance, since I still haven't found the box of summer footwear I put away last September...

While packing for vacation, I discovered that BOTH of my (ancient) swimsuits had perished elastic. I only had time to check out the local thrift store. Amazingly I found not one but two one-piece suits, that fit perfectly when I got home to try on, in excellent condition. Both are more "me" than the ones I replaced.

I haven't identified any other wardrobe needs for this year, but if I do, for sure I will be checking out secondhand first!

Great finds, Carla!

Yesterday, I thrifted a HEWI--a blazer in the perfect (for me) blue-red colour. Thin wool makes it wearable most of the year, except hot summer days. Rounded lapel--a detail I LOVE. Beautiful lining. Laura Ashley.

Five second hand things have entered my wardrobe this year.

Two via TradeMe - the black tuxedo and rust bag. Both successes - I love second hand bags - and most of my bags are added second hand.

One via the Dress for Success Sale - the cream linen blazer. I added this in autumn so it didn't get many opportunities before winter.

Two via friends - the blush sweatshirt was a swap. It's a great lounging option. And some black pull on ponte type pants that I bought off a friend. Both have been great workhorses.

Usually I find statements second hand - but this year it has been more about essentials. I haven't done much in store browsing this year which is probably why.

What a delightful thread ! So at this point my wardrobe is probably 90+% second hand. My best recent charity shop scores lately have been my two new summer long shorts, and a pair of vintage Issey Miyake pants. My finds at in person and online consignment include jackets by Jil Sander and Marni, and shoes by Simone Rochas. I found a couple of Uniqlo +J items too. I could go on. And on.

My husband likes second hand shopping too. And he has no patience at all for retail!

I feel like I’m getting better at second hand shopping. I got a second hand Zara linen jacket today for $20 and I love it! Exactly what I was looking for. This year I’ve also scored a velvet embroidered bag, a giant ring, various necklaces, a silk Zimmerman skirt, a gold coach bag, a red MCM bag, a Zara metallic knit. Even a velvet coat!

Not all in Finds yet.

I thrift probably 3/4 of my clothes, mostly from Poshmark. I am wearing right now a Cuddl Duds violet and aqua floral maxi dress from there. It is astounding that there is so much great stuff available out there secondhand--good news for those of us on a limited budget.

I love all your thrifted finds, and I would wear the heck out of the first three. The purple floral dress is flexible for many occasions.

Runcarla, what a lovely story! Thrifting is a skill that requires time and patience and you are very good at it! I am slowly learning and I find this type of shopping more relaxing and I love it for its environmental benefits. So far this year I bought and kept 6 pieces, this has allowed me to test different colours and cuts and I have notice that I prefer to look first in my favourites second hand online places rather than online shops.
The purple top is the last addition (brand new, £15 instead of £150) which I will test for a camping day with the company.

Oh I love looking at people's second hand scores! I have more that are not photographed, but some of mine from this year are below. Summer tops are easy to find for me, but the leather jacket (J Jill) is my most thrilling used purchase this year. It is buttery soft and in perfect condition, and was dirt cheap at Goodwill.

Funny story about your DH.

Looks like you have a lot of great thrift shops in your town Runcarla, I did a fair amount of second hand shopping this year, split between consignment shops and thrift stores nearby.

Calvin Klein Wool Peacoat that I have yet to put into action as I bought it in late Spring,

PURE Handknit Pink Cardigan, it looks great with my grey cords and grey turtleneck

Uniqlo Skirt- Love the length, the swoosh and it has pockets too.

TWIK Charcoal Sweater- Works great with so much in my closet.

You might be surprised - I got into a second hand market. I found some nice things and made some mistakes. I’m trying to evaluate it all now and decide on my next steps. I also created my own wardrobe for sale there and sold some shoes and clothes.

I started by looking for winter even clothes and replacement glass earrings from COS. I found more than that :)
photos 1 to 3 - new with tags
Phitos 4 & 5 - like new condition, COS top and a dickie that are now a part of my event capsule.

I’m not going to bore you with my mistakes, they are all due to sizing.

You made some wonderful purchases this year, Carla! The bright shirt is a great wildcard. And a cotton blend Breton is a good find for your style.

I have more luck at consignment than thrift. I didn't purchase much that way in the past year, but one thing I got was a workhorse winner. Dries van Noten plaid pants.

The other was a dud -- at leas so far. An Aritzia summer tank. I just didn't have occasion to wear it. I have the same one in off-white and usually wear it a lot each season.

Not giving up on the tank yet -- I will see what next year brings. And it was inexpensive, so not a big loss if it does not work for me. I'll just put it back in the system.

I admire people who are successful thrifters and wish I could be one. I made a post mid-summer asking for advice on online thrifting. Unfortunately I didn't have the best experience with my first Poshmark purchase and it was such a turnoff it may be my last. The item was exactly what I wanted...my size in something I already own and know I like, in a new print. But. It arrived so reeking of fragrance I could hardly stand it. I still wanted it so I did multiple soaks in vinegar and baking soda (separately) and multiple washes. Like 7. The smell is gone but I'm not yet over my emotional aversion to the item.

I did contact the seller to complain and tell her she shouldn't use such fragranced laundry detergent but she said she used scent free detergent. If that's true, then she wears strong perfume and her own detergent didn't get it out but she thought it smelled fine because she likes strong perfume.

This tale of woe is not what you were asking! I'm now back to saying, wow, I admire everyone who can be so successful at thrifting!

I bought three things on eBay! A luxurious leather jacket to replace one that was just too small, alas, and a substantial cardigan to replace one that was just too big. Go figure. I'm looking forward to wearing both of them.

The third item is less exciting, but still very useful - a dark grey Eddie Bauer sweater (also eBay) with a black side stripe on the sleeves.

Interesting that for all my love of color, these are as neutral as can be.

I don’t have any pressing clothing needs, but if I get the itch for some retail therapy, I’ll hit up the charity shops before looking to retail this month.

DS#2 finished his schooling a year ago, and is doing an edit of books and other possessions as he transitions from student to working person. DH and I will be tackling the under stair storage area later this month. There’s a half bag of clothes in there that will be topped off when we both do our annual closet review in October.

I’ve always enjoyed thrifting, yard sales, and exchanges - but DH is a late adopter. The few times I had a yard sale, DH left the house for the day! About 5 years ago he accompanied me when I visited my favourite local shop. He found a deck of unopened Bridge cards identical to a set his parents had. When I made my purchase, he added the cards to the pile. There was no price on the cards, so the SA said we could have them for free. DH was chuffed, and now he’s game for ‘popping some tags’ when I do my thrift shop rounds.
