I agree with The Cat- you’re very wise Zaeobi! *Some* “fashion people”- I hasten to say not Angie- can be so incredibly judgemental. I asked a question of the forum in one of my first ever posts over 3 years ago if people thought fashion magazines were mean. I certainly felt that they could be. At that time there were some pretty nasty columnists in our local ones, and it was really good to find the kindness here of Angie and the forum.

yeah, I think Charles was a bit off in this one, maybe a little too ironic.
Seattle had plenty of style and was well known worldwide in the 90s! I remember traveling Europe then & people were so excited to hear about Seattle

It has always been a bit mix of fashion---from grunge, born here out of practicality. In a rainy, woodsy environment flannel and boots and all was practical before it was trendy.

But even in the 1980s, the city had a large alt culture: leather and black clad "new wavers". a lively rockabilly scene. Lots of artists and crafters.....Birkenstocks and casual west coast wear.....All those prepsters helped Nordstroms with their sales of polos and penny loafers and khakis....

But there also has always been a bit of a "do your own thing" "I dont give a f*&#@." Wear what you want. wear what feels comfortable. Seattle is a much younger city than those on the east coast & we never really had as much of the "formal" dress code. Of course people do wear suits and labels and all, but I feel there is less

I'm with the others!

Fashion in the '90s made Seattle the centre of the universe! Along with Pearl Jam, Chris Cornell and Nirvana. And OF COURSE Jimi Hendrix in the '70s.

I was living in Cape Town at the time and Seattle fashion hit AFRICA!

I am one of the few people not in gear, gear +jeans, and Athleisure around here (downtown Seattle). Some in pajamas :)

I plan on dressing up as and when we come out of lockdown. However, it seems that for many Athleisure worn all day will be even more firmly entrenched. I find it hard to get DS to wear jeans, he prefers track pants.

I think this is going to be an issue in more places than Seattle, although I can see that cities that are less synonymous with fashion will feel it worse ... I think it will be very interesting to see if people stay in their sweats - or perhaps everyone will swing the opposite way and start dressing to the nines once we can go out again!

Yep, I'm with the others. Seattle to me defined 90s grunge style and music, and the whole coffeehouse culture- and the rise of acoustic music. Style comes just as much, if not more so, from the street as from the catwalk!

I'm intrigued by this idea that your clothes need to say something - & that, if they don't say the right thing, you can't find a clear enough direction for conversation yourself to keep people in the same living room as you.

I suppose I'll never quite understand what it's like to have to spend your free time socialising with such judgemental people, but I feel like some of that judgement has rubbed off on the author (based on their description of Seattle's previous fashion presumably not being fashionable enough for them).

The author's comment that 'comfortable clothes are either bland or ugly' would surely make them a hypocrite if they, probably like the people at those parties, embraced normcore when it was cool (back when everyone still went outside) but have eschewed it now, in danger of looking too comfy. It seems we have finally come full circle!

I spent many months in Seattle in the 90s and there definitely was a strong style sense. Before Microsoft et al there were the small grungey bars, revival cinemas, lots of great used book stores, micro breweries, plenty of plaid and hiking boots, and the first Starbucks. Feeling nostalgic!

Rachy, yep Seattle did define fashion for a lot of people in the early 1990s with plaid and Doc Martens. It was never a look that I could wrap my head around, but I could say that about most 1990s fashion. OMG, I sound like somebody's cranky granny!

Hmmm, I agree Rachy- I lived there from 1981 until a few years ago and always thought Grunge was an influential aesthetic. There was always a rich culture of offbeat fashion amongst younger folks, too. On the other hand, fleece was ubiquitous.

Lol. I feel deeply confused. Seattle was not well-known in 1999? Did not Seattle define the 1990s? I feel almost certain my Carribean cousin made me a Nirvana CD in ‘91...
