Arya, you look fabulous! I love wearing sarees for many of the same reasons that you have expressed. Great job on being resourceful with the choli...I hope you get many more chances to wear this.

Thanks for all the tips, ladies! I ended up wearing a choli that I already own (for dance class). I bought a petticoat at Ali Baba's Bazzar on Lake City Way (only $10). I also got a wrist-full of bangles. I was very musical. Glorious!

I loved wearing this...once a friend got my pleats straightened out. /blush
I felt graceful, feminine and powerful all evening. I may have to find excuses to wear a sari more often!

P.s. I'm sorry that the photo is grainy. We're looking for a camera that does well in low-light conditions. Any suggestions?

What a fascinating thread! Arya, please do post pics of you outfit! I have a sari I had made for a Bollywood party, the only chance I ever had to wear it. I LOVED wearing it - so feminine and glamourous! I would love more opportunities to wear it...

Arya, here's a nice substitute I found on amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Extensio.....d_sbs_a_32

It is a little pricey though. It also seems something easy to achieve with a similar tee/top and some minor creative DIYing.

I'm really looking forward to seeing your final outfit!

I agree that you can use a long light skirt as a petticoat, so long as it doesn't have a stretchy waistband. It is ideal if it's a drawstring.

You may be able to adjust the blouse to your size. If you turn it inside out, there are usually 2-3 rows of stitches along the side and sleeve seams. They will be completely straight seam. You only can unpick all the rows except the last one with a seam ripper.

It would also be completely appropriate to use a gold sparkly/sequined tank top as a choli. If the tank is stretchy, just make sure you pin the shoulder pleats to your bra through the tank.

Arya, this link might help? http://www.indianstoresdesishops.com/tag/seattle

Also, any flared, light long skirt can work as a petticoat. Even in India I had friends who would wear bandeau bras or tube tops for the choli.

Aw, I could send you a petticoat, but a readymade choli that fits is hard to find. I have a stretch velvet one that I use, as well as the ones I've had made in India. Wish I could help. Any Indian friends in the area that could share something?

I am attending another wedding this weekend (yay!), this time "Indian dress is encouraged". I own a gorgeous magenta and gold sari, but the choli (cropped blouse) that came with it is way too small for me, and it didn't come with a petticoat (long tie-waist underskirt into which the sari's pleats get tucked). This is actually my first appropriate opportunity to wear it, but I need those items in order to do so.

I have scoured the internet for local Indian clothing stores, but the few with internet listings are in Kent (a bit far). Do any Seattle forum members have recommendations for downtown or parts north? I'd go to Bellevue/Redmond/Kirkland if I have to...
