Well, that's a bummer! But hopefully you'll have a bit more time to plan that way. Spring here can vary quite a lot, weather wise, but by the water cold damp wind is almost a guarantee any time other than high summer. Our beaches also tend to be a combination of rocks and coarse sand. Rubber rain boots are probably the most practical beach footwear here.

After all that, my aunties’ ash scattering has been postponed to Spring when there’s low tide unlike next week. Who knew?

I’ll take my (hooded) red raincoat and pack an umbrella. I don’t change my color palette much between Fall and Spring so will probably take the same clothes I spent the morning planning out until I received the postponement message.

The rain here is often a drizzle or a mist, which is also where that "Seattlites don't use umbrella's" comes from. 1/3 the time it's too windy for an umbrella (gross sideways rain!), 1/3 the time it's not real rain so you'd be constantly putting the umbrella up and down, and 1/3 the time it's reasonable to use an umbrella!

Next week looks like in the upper 50's and about a 30% chance of rain (or, maybe, raining 30% of the day?). So I'd agree w Firecracker that you should also think about the possibility that it will be sunny and windy and frankly beautiful Fall weather for much of your time here.

The red coat will be great. Like JAileen, I would also take an umbrella. That thing about "Seattleites don't use umbrellas" and "you can tell a tourist by the umbrella" is hogwash. Probably perpetuated by people who still wish they fit in with the cool kids in high school. I use an umbrella if the rain warrants it. I haven't yet broken out my booties, but if it's rainy and in the 50s, they are a really good idea. Maybe also bring oxfords for possible good weather. Safe travels! And my condolences to you.

If it really rains, your coat isn’t waterproof. If it were me, I would also take an umbrella.

Very sorry for your loss. Love the red coat. For the shoes, I would go with the booties, as I prefer more foot coverage in the bad weather.

I'm sorry for your loss, Donna.
I think the red coat looks good. Does it have a hood or do you have a rain hat or umbrella?
Bring the Uniqlo puffer for layering. We've had some chilly periods and supposedly a cold front is on the way. Plus it will be colder by/on the water.
Agree on avoiding clogs for the ankle twist factor. I like the patent boots or oxfords you show -- they look wipeable in case of mud.

I'd be worried about the clogs in rain, but probably good otherwise. Love the red coat!

I find myself going to Seattle next week, well actually Bainbridge Island to scatter my aunts' ashes. I assume we will experience rain at least once or twice and hopefully not on a boat. California has been in a drought so long I probably won't recognize rain.

Anyway, I won't be in Seattle proper at all and am likely to be overdressed in whatever I wear. My raincoat, similar to the one shown, has a zip out lining and hood. The Uniqlo coat is supposed to be water resistant but I've never tested it. When I went to Chicago one November, I actually layered the red raincoat over the Uniqlo! Will the red coat work?

Oh, and I have a red Eddie Bauer parka which gear and is pretty waterproof. It is jacket length and not terribly warm.

For shoes, I'm hoping I won't have to tromp through mud out in the country (but you never know!), but I'm thinking I should err on the side of not slipping? The clogs could result in a twisted ankle and are the least comfortable of the footwear below.

This won't be a funeral or even really a formal memorial service, but a small gathering of cousins whom I haven't seen in nearly 35 years. I expect to see fleece and plaid, but not black other than my black jeans and footwear.

Also, if anyone has recommendations on where to eat and stay in Ashland. . .but I'll pose that question in Off Topic.

Thx,
Donna
