I agree with Sharon, that a lot of good things sell out if you aren't quick. If I see something that is on my list and is just what I want, I'll get it if I can afford it, even if it's out of season. It's nice to just be done with it all though, so the seasonal shopping makes good sense too.

I struggle with this! Probably because I live in eternal winter. I just can't shop for spring when it's 4F out.

However, fall comes early, usually mid-September and that I have no trouble shopping for! I think I need to be able to wear something right after purchasing it . . . No, not ideal, but true.

I find this really tricky too. I hadn't planned to buy any winter items until after Easter, as it really isn't cool enough to need them. However, all the shops have brought in their winter stock, and I think all the really nice stuff gets stocked early on in the season. I know there is a bit of FOMO happening here, but it is based on the experience of having things sold out if I wait too long. This is the first year I have actually had a list and an idea of what I want.

I like your half/half structure. I practice I tend to buy throughout the season as I have a weekly budget and I need to let it accumulate, but I will "borrow" against the future early in the season.

Glad that you talked about this.
I am also struggling with buying for the season vs running out of sizes.
I ended up buying a pair of shoes and a dress because they were heavily discounted and belonged to my list although they are summer items.
I am.glad that looking back you realize that you actually sticked to the plan.

You have a sensible budget/buying strategy, Laura. It makes sense to buy early, but I like your concept of saving half of your budget for later - things to wear now/soon, plus the opportunity to refresh when the warmer weather arrives.

I'm heading out later this week to make a start on spring/summer, and will pounce on items on my list even if it means buying slightly ahead of budget. They will have to be things that I can wear now, though, as I'm one of those who needs to be in the season I'm buying for - I can't try anything too summery while I have lily-white skin, for instance!

I've found that a few places too, Joy. I bet there will be another round of spring merchandise in a few weeks, but in the meantime it's annoying to miss out on an item that would have worked for you. I went ahead and ordered a pair of sandals from DSW the other day even though I probably won't wear them much until the summer, because they were exactly what I was looking for and I didn't want them to sell out in my size.

My shopping goals are something like yours but I'm failing. I realized the other day that I probabl need to start seasonal shopping even earlier. ( There is still snow on the ground and single digit temperatures). I found that a spring/summer item I'd been looking for is sold out already in my size or anything near it. Arrrgh.

Are you ever convinced that you have failed to meet a goal, and then you step back a little and realize that you've actually made a good bit of progress? Last year one of the things I wanted to move toward was shopping less often and in more concentrated chunks. In my head I'd done a crappy job with that, but looking at the actual data - i.e. my budget/items in file - I'm actually close. The last winter purchase I made was in mid-January, and all my spring purchases were 2/18 through this week (still waiting for the last of the online orders to arrive to decide k/r). And I'm done - assuming everything works out, I have no big holes and should be good with clothes until it starts getting properly hot, May-June-ish.

It's not literally in a day or a weekend, but then I wasn't aiming for that. I doubt I'd like that anyway, since that would eliminate online shopping and I couldn't take as much advantage of opportune sales.

The aha has been the timing - I didn't expect to start needing some spring things so early, planning to do my spring shopping in March-April. That's partially the weather here this year, and partially that I'm becoming more decisive. I know what I want and don't want, and when I see it at a reasonable price I want to snag it, rather than waiting until I absolutely need it.

I've still got my budget divided up seasonally, and in halves, so I allocate a certain amount for the first half of spring, say, and then once I spend it I'm done, and then there will be a new amount for the second half of spring. Originally this was tied to the 'proper' seasons (solstices and equinoxes etc.) but I've realized that as far as buying goes, you need to buy your wardrobe in advance of needing to wear it (duh) so really the second half of winter should be about buying for spring, second half of spring for summer, etc. (Obviously you'd have to adjust this for the weather wherever you live; those of you with snow still on the ground still have a bit of time before you have to worry about sandals and capris.)
