Oh wow, 5 generations is quite an achievement - that should be celebrated! (Even if I have children, we'd only have 3 generations at most - my & my husband's grandparents are no longer with us).

I'd agree that a gentle pre-talk with the niece is in order. Who knows; maybe she deliberately kept it vague (autumnal season instead of specifying colours) for such a reason?

I'll join the chorus - MIL definitely deserves to wear whatever she wants! So exciting to have everyone together. It's an opportunity that doesn't happen very often!

Agree agree. After respecting MIL choice, next thing is to be appreciative & encouraging to niece and use some general photo-savvy ( Janet -advice?) when selecting outfits. Really, just saying “ fall colors “ doesn’t necessarily get what you want. A sea of brown and camel? Or who knows- so it won’t be a tightly staged outfit thing like some types of family Christmas card photos anyway. And people need to feel comfortable for enjoying the event, weather conditions. I’d avoid prints and black & white if possible ( except if is MIL’s fave)
So then, if there are fall leaf colors and blues and teals and purple and burgundy and MIL is in the middle of all that, it should be great.

I'm certain the niece means well but I agree that perhaps others should have been consulted first before taking this decision.
Perhaps someone can advise the niece to reconsider the options. We want everyone happy in this special photo especially your MIL and she certainly should be able to wear whatever she likes best.

Oh, absolutely agree that MIL should wear whatever she pleases! If my mom were alive, she’d be 94 now and for sure I would tell everyone we need to follow her color lead, if anything!

It’s a wonderful opportunity to have so many generations gather — one that many of us never have (I have just one photo representing four generations, as my mom got to see her great-grandson once before she passed away). Enjoy and remove as much stress as possible, especially on the elders we value so much!

Reconsidering in light of other responses here. LJP really nailed it. Others should take their cues from her, not vice-versa, and she should be the center of the pic. Like Jenni said, the niece was probably trying to be helpful, not pushy. She might have just heard of coordinating outfits for a pic for the first time ever, and wanted to use the exciting “new” idea without thinking through what colors work for everyone involved.

Agree with everyone else, but think tell the niece nicely that MIL pulls rank, because niece is obviously trying to do a good job and get nice photos and might just not have considered that it will make MIL sad? Younger people don’t, necessarily?

My grandma was the best at it. She started when she was 50. Also, all us girls took a dress of hers eventually, because: legendary

I'm with Angie. At 95, MIL gets to wear what she enjoys. It's wonderful to be able to celebrate the holidays with five generations! I do find the concept of having everybody dress in like colors a little off-putting. That said, I think that autumn colors cover a wide range of colors, and I would put teal in there with them.

I agree that it's AMAZING you will have five generations in one photo! I'd see if there's a coordinating color the MIL would be happy with that might help her stand out a bit. Realistically, she deserves to stand out and be recognized, and perhaps an off white or a pink or some other colour that she favors will coordinate and still allow her to wear what she likes. Realistically, there are shades of red, orange, brown, white, yellow and pink that would go very well with "fall colours." Likewise, many blues coordinate with everything. Look into it further before acquiescing to the old brown jacket.

I think 95 year-old MIL should wear whatever tickles her fancy! She pulls rank in age and experience :)

As for the Fall palette dress code, that's a tough one, and not universally popular. Maybe the family dress code can throw in some complementary options - like blues and neutrals too?

Hm, I’m of two minds.

The professional family photo we had done where we all wore cranberry & cream worked out really well, so I can see the benefit of a tight pallet. But unilaterally declaring one seems weird; she should’ve floated the idea/asked people what they preferred.

On the new tops: do any of them go well with fall colors? What are “fall colors” anyway? Orange, sage, and brown don’t work for me. I’m thinking grape, forest green, and cranberry could be considered fall colors. I’d look up recent ways of mixing colors and see if any of the pieces you’re thinking of could be tweaked to work with the niece’s color scheme.

Inspired by the post and responses about the festive party dress codes going on this time of year, a small rant. We are going to have a large family party including five generations, from my 95-year old MIL down to a new great great granddaughter. We really love to, and are completely in favor of, taking many family photos at the dinner which will be the first time in three years so many can get together at once.

One of our nieces is either arranging or taking photos, I guess, because she sent an email asking everyone to wear fall colors for the photos. Humph. Dear MIL rarely goes anywhere, has some new clothing items, but none of them are fall colors. I think she’s really disappointed that she’ll have to choose an old rust and brown tweed jacket, which is nice but she’s had “forever.” I think she wants to wear one of her new tops. If she really had nothing in fall colors, I’d tell the niece that fact, but she does.

Honestly, fall colors aren’t really my thing anyway, plus I had the idea originally to wear a new teal ombré sweater with the puffed sleeves style, but I’ll save it for another day. No response needed. Just commiserate if you can.
